Chapter One

Lucas, Rosie, Max and Will were waiting outside Starcourt Mall for Mike. He finally arrived, parking his bike. "You're late", Rosie stated. "Sorry", Mike apologised. "Again", Lucas added. "We're gonna miss the opening", Will said. "Yeah, if you keep whining about it. Let's go!" Mike replied. "If you guys keep whining about it. Nyeh-nyeh-nyeh", Lucas mocked, as Rosie pushed him in the door.

"Just please stop talking, dude"

"Let me guess", Rosie said. "You were busy". Lucas started smacking his lips together. "Oh, yeah, real mature, guys", Mike said.

"Oh, El, I wish we could make out forever, and never hang out with any of our friends"

"Lucas, stop", Max said.

"Will thinks it's funny"

"Because it is", Will chuckled. "Yeah, it's so funny that I want to spend romantic time with my girlfriend", Mike said. "I'm spending romantic time with my girlfriend", Lucas pointed out, putting his arm around Rosie. They ran down the escalator, pushing past people, apologising profusely as they went. Once they made it down, they continued bumping into people. "Watch it", one girl snapped at them. "Yeah! Watch it, nerd!" Erica Sinclair exclaimed from the fountain, where she was eating an ice cream cone. "Isn't it past your bedtime?" Lucas asked her.

"Isn't it time you died?"

"Psycho!"

"Butthead!"

"Mall rat!"

"Fart face!"

He blew a raspberry at her.

"Oh, well, that's really mature", Rosie said, grabbing his arm as they headed into Scoops Ahoy. They went over to the counter where Robin and Margo stood and Mike rang the bell repeatedly. "You can't be serious", Margo stated. "Hey, dingus, your children are here", Robin exclaimed. The back window opened and Steve popped his head out. "Again? Seriously?" he said. Mike rang the bell again.

Steve opened the back door and let them all out. "Come on, come on", he urged. "I swear, if anybody hears about this–", he began. "We're dead", they finished in unison.

Mike peeked his head out and looked left and right. "All clear", he said and they made their way out. The pre-movie jingle played as they entered the theatre. The movie fanfare started playing just as they took their seats. "See, Lucas? We made it", Mike whispered. "We missed the previews", Lucas replied. "Still made it. Fart face", Rosie smirked. Will opened his bag and handed the snacks and drinks they bought. They watched the screen intently as the movie began. Then all of a sudden, the audio slowed and stopped and the screen went blank. The crowd clamoured in annoyance.

All of the power in the mall went off.

Robin, Margo and Steve looked up as the lights shut off. "That's weird", Steve commented. He went over and started flipping the light switch on and off. "That isn't work, dingus", Robin stated.

"Oh, really?" He started flipping it faster.

"Oh, yeah, that's helping", Margo said, pointing around at the dark room.

Then, like nothing happened, the power came back on again.

Steve stopped messing with the light switch and put his hands up. "Let there be light", he stated. Margo rolled her eyes, smiling.

The film reel sputtered and came back on. The crowd cheered. Rosie and Lucas smiled at each other. She intertwined their fingers.

"Shit!" Mandi gasped, sitting up straight in bed. She picked up her watch on the bedside table and checked it. "Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!" she exclaimed. "Wh– What's wrong?" Jonathan asked, sitting up beside her.

"It's almost 9:00"

"What?"

"We forgot to reset the clocks. The power went out last night, remember?"

"Oh, shit!"

They got out of bed and hurriedly tried to get dressed. Jonathan fell over as he tried to put on his pants. Mandi threw her shoes and handbag out the window and then hopped out after them. She started running to Jonathan's car.

Jonathan came out of his room, doing up the buttons on his shirt. "Hey, hey, wait up", Joyce said, getting up from the table. "Oh, no, I'll eat at work", he replied. "Jonathan, you got a little something", Margo said, pointing to her cheek as Joyce rubbed the lipstick mark off his cheek. "How the hell did that get there?"

"I don't know, Margo, but, uh, I must say, you have a very creaky window. You should keep an eye on that"

"Thanks, Jonathan. I'll look into that"

"Mm-hmm. Alright. I'm late. Bye"

Joyce sat back down. "Gross", Will commented. "Well, I don't think you're gonna think it's gross when you fall in love", Margo replied, applying lip gloss.

"I'm not gonna fall in love"

"Whatever you say. I gotta go. Love you"

She kissed Joyce on the cheek and Will on the head.

"Can you please drive faster?" Nancy asked Jonathan after they had picked her up. "Do you wanna break down? We're lucky this thing still drives at all", Jonathan replied.

"I'm serious, Jonathan, I can't be late"

"You mean we can't be late"

"No, I mean I can't be late"

"What do you mean, Nance?" Mandi questioned.

"They like him no matter what he does"

"Hey, they like you too", Jonathan said.

"Yeah. They like that I'm a coffee delivery machine. They don't actually like me or respect me as a living, breathing human with a brain"

"Wait, you just– you just gotta be patient, okay? They're set in their ways, you know?"

"They're sexist?" Mandi said.

"Can you just... please drive faster?" Nancy pleaded.

Dustin sat on his bed after returning from Camp Knowwhere. Then, out of nowhere, all his robotic toys seemed to come to life, walking towards him. They started walking out of the room and his eyes widened. He grabbed his Farrah Fawcett and walked out after them. "It's just a dream", he stated. "You're dreaming". He walked past the wall where the party was hiding, waiting to surprise him. "Now!" Mike whispered to El who had a thin stream of blood coming from her nose. She opened her eyes and the toys stopped moving. Dustin crouched down and picked one of them up to inspect it. Then another as they prepared the sign and noisemakers. Max counted them down with her hand. They blew on the noisemakers and Dustin started screaming. He turned around and sprayed Farrah Fawcett right in Lucas' eyes.

Lucas ran his eyes under the cold water faucet. "Ow, ow, ow. Ow", he complained. He stood back up again, looking at Rosie. "Better?" she asked, putting her hands on his face.

"Still stings". He blinked his eyes again and looked at her. "Is that a new zit?"

"What is wrong with you?" She grabbed his hand and stuck it back under the faucet.

"I was just asking!" He started screaming in pain.

A few moments later, the others came past carrying equipment and heading for the front door. "What's going on?" Rosie questioned them. "Going to talk to Dustin's girlfriend", Will replied. "Girlfriend?" Rosie and Lucas said in unison. They exchanged a look and quickly went after them.

"Okay, I am telling you, this hat is totally blowing my best feature", Steve complained. "Yeah, company policy is a real drag", Robin replied. "Who are you showing off this feature to exactly?" Margo asked him. "No-nobody, you. You, of course", he stammered. "Smooth", Robin commented. "You're not King Steve anymore. You're lucky to get Margo. You could never get a girl now".

"I could totally get a girl now"

Margo glared at him.

"Not that I want to"

"You know what, prove it. 12 o'clock. Go flirt with that girl and prove once and for all, the ladies man you truly are"

"Fine but only because you asked me to"

"Right"

"I'm going in. Okay? And you know what?" He flicked off his hat. "Screw company policy"

"Oh, my God, you're a whole new man"

"Right? Ooh". He whipped around to face the customers. "Ahoy, ladies! Didn't see you there"

The girl gasped in shock.

"Would you guys like to set sail on this ocean of flavour with me? I'll be your captain. I'm Steve Harrington"

"Oh, God"

"Can I get you guys a little taste of the Cherries Jubilee? No? Anybody? Banana Boat? Four people, four spoons? Share it in the booth? Anybody? It's hot out here"

"He sucks", Robin stated. "He's alright", Margo said, smiling.

The party members panted as they climbed up a grassy hill, carrying the equipment. "Aren't we high enough?" Rosie asked. "Cerebro works best at a hundred metres", Dustin replied. "You know, I'm pretty sure people in Utah have cell phones", Max pointed out.

"Yeah, but Suzie's Mormon"

"Oh, shit. She doesn't have electricity?" Lucas said. "That's the Amish", Rosie said. "What are Mormons?" Will questioned. "Super religious white people", Dustin answered. "They have electricity and cars and stuff, but...since I'm not Mormon, her parents would never approve. It's all a bit... Shakespearean". "Shakespearean?" Rosie said.

"Yeah. Like Romeo and Juliet"

"Right"

"Star-crossed lovers"

"I got it"

"Guys!" Mike called out, stopping them. "This is fun and all, but, uh...". "I have to go home", El said. "We're almost there", Dustin said. "Sorry, man", Mike said. "Curfew. Come on, let's go". "Good luck", El said as they turned around and started walking home, hand in hand. "Curfew at 4:00?" Dustin said. "They're lying", Lucas said. "It's been like this all summer", Will added. "It's romantic", Max said.

"It's gross"

"It's bullshit", Dustin said. "I just got home. Well, their loss, right? Onwards and upwards! Suzie awaits!" They all sighed.

Dustin dropped his bag at the top of the hill. "Made it", he said. "Yeah, only took five hours," Max stated. "Why couldn't we just play D&D?" Will asked. "I'm so thirsty", Lucas panted, opening the water bottle and chugging it. Max and Rosie watched him in disbelief. He stopped, wiping his mouth. "Did you seriously just drink the rest of our water?" Max questioned. He spat it back into the bottle and held it out to her, smiling. She rolled her eyes, walking away. Rosie fought off a laugh and shoved him. They helped Dustin set up his device. "Pretty impressive, right?" Dustin said after they had put it together. "Now, you ready to meet my love?" He turned the radio on. "Suzie, this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over", he said. The radio static hissed in response.

"One sec. She's probably... She's still there. Suzie...this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over"

The radio static hissed once again.

"I'm sure she's there. It's just– You know, maybe, she's, like, busy or– It's around dinnertime. Suzie, do you copy? This is Dustin. Over"

"...do you copy? This is Dustin. Over", Dustin said into the radio as the sky had gotten dark and the others were lying on the grass. The radio static hissed.

"Suzie! This is Dustin. Do you copy? Over"

The radio static hissed again.

"Suzie, this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over. Suzie–"

"Dustin, come on! She's not there", Max interrupted.

"She's there, alright? She'll pick up"

"Maybe Cerebro doesn't work", Will suggested. "Or maybe Suzie doesn't exist", Lucas said. "She exists!" Dustin argued.

"She's a genius and she's hotter than Phoebe Cates? No girl is that perfect"

"Is that so?" Rosie asked, sitting up.

"I mean...you're perfect. I mean, like, per– perfect in your own way. In your special– your own special way"

She chuckled. "Okay, breathe. Relax. I'm obviously perfect and Dustin's obviously lying. Come on, Don Juan". She got up, put out her hand and he took it, getting up.

"Where are you going?" Dustin called out.

"Home"

Once they made it to the bottom of the hill, Rosie stopped Lucas. He looked at her with a questioning look. She smiled, leaning in and kissed him lightly on the lips. She pulled away and saw this eyes were still closed. She smiled wider and he opened them, smiling back. "You know, Mike's at El's", she said. "I could sneak you into the basement without my parent's knowing".

"Sure, what do you wanna do?"

She smirked.

Lucas and Rosie were making out on the couch in the basement. Her legs were thrown across his lap, her arms were around his neck and his were around her waist. They didn't hear the door opening and someone coming down the stairs. "Seriously?!" Mike exclaimed, causing the two to break apart. "That's gross, you guys?" "Are you judging us? Really?" Rosie replied. "What do you and El do when you're in her room?"

"That's not the point"

"Oh, it's not? Didn't think so. What are you doing back here anyway? And why do you look like you just got shot?"

"Nothing. It doesn't matter. Just stop sucking face in the basement, okay?"

"Do you want us to do it in my room instead?"

"Rosie, you're disgusting"

"Mike, you're an ass"

"Okay, this was great, guys, but I'm gonna head home", Lucas interjected, moving Rosie's legs and getting up.

"Okay, bye. Mike, avert your eyes". She got off the couch and pecked him on the lips. "I'll see you tomorrow"

"Bye"
