Chapter 18
The next few days went by in a blur. The members each took their turn to look after Haneul while Jeonghan continued to remain unconscious. One day with Vernon, one day with Joshua, one day with Hoshi.
In between their own responsibilities and the stress of Jeonghan's situation, the members found themselves getting quickly attached to the small child that had found his way into their lives. His sweet demeanor and gentle nature made him an endearing presence despite his earlier outbursts and crying fits.
Seungcheol watched from the sidelines as the other members interacted with Haneul. He could see the bond forming between them, the way the child's presence seemed to bring out their gentle and caring sides. It was a side of the members he had rarely seen before, and it brought a small smile to his face.
Finally, on the fourth day after Jeonghan's accident, the doctor called with the good news.
"Jeonghan's waking up," he said.
The members all exchanged looks of confusion when Seungcheol received the call. They had been eagerly awaiting this moment, hoping with all their hearts that Jeonghan would regain consciousness.
Seungcheol felt a wave of relief wash over him at the doctor's words. He quickly ended the call and turned to the other members, trying to calm the hopeful energy pulsing through his veins.
"He's waking up," he repeated, his voice slightly breathless.
The members all cheered and exchanged excited smiles, their faces lighting up with joy.
"Finally," Joshua said, a sigh of relief escaping his lips.
Seungcheol quietly made his way toward his room, his mind buzzing with the news. As he passed through the hallway, he could hear the faint sound of childish chatter coming from his room. He stopped at the slightly-ajar door and peered inside, a smile forming on his face at the sight that greeted him.
There was Haneul, playing with a small toy car on the bed. His small face was illuminated by a smile, and he was having a one-sided conversation with the toy as he moved it back and forth.
Seungcheol watched the child for a few moments, his heart swelling with affection. The sight of Haneul playing so innocently was a comforting sight to see after the stress of the last few days.
He pushed open the door fully and stepped into the room, his footsteps drawing the child's attention immediately.
"Haneul," he called gently.
The small boy's head snapped up at the sound of his name, his eyes immediately lighting up with a mixture of surprise and joy. He let out a small, delighted gasp and quickly scrambled off the bed, running toward Seungcheol with his arms outstretched.
Seungcheol knelt down and scooped the child up in his arms, holding him close. He could feel the small body trembling slightly with pure excitement as he hugged him tight, and his heart ached with fondness for the boy. Despite their short knowing time he already knew he loved him like his own.
He rocked Haneul gently in his arms, his gaze locked on the child's smiling face. "Did you miss me?" he asked softly.
The child snuggled closer in his arms, his small face burying itself into the crook of his neck. His muffled voice came out in a soft whine as he mumbled something unintelligible, his small arms wrapping around Seungcheol's neck in a stranglehold. He clearly missed him a lot.
"I missed you too," he said, his tone affectionate. He stood up with the child still in his arms.
"The others told me you were very good," he said, walking over to the bed where Haneul had been playing.
He sat down on the edge of the bed, placing the child carefully in his lap. Haneul immediately leaned against him, snuggling close.
Seungcheol wrapped his arms around the child again, his heart filled with happiness. The past few days had been difficult for all of them, with the uncertainty surrounding Jeonghan's condition and the extra responsibility of caring for Haneul.
But the moment his arms, he found himself feeling more at peace than he had in days. Despite the fact that he had only known Haneul for a short time, he already felt a deep bond with the small boy.
He gently rubbed the child's back, his mind wandering to the rest of the members who were eagerly waiting for him to return.
Despite Haneul's repeated requests to see Jeonghan, Seungcheol had been reluctant to take him. The younger members had already taken him once the day before, but they had returned with worried expressions on their faces.
They had told Seungcheol about the way Jeonghan had reacted to the child's presence, how he had become even more distressed.
When the doctor had called with the news that Jeonghan was waking up, a new thought had begun to form in Seungcheol's mind. Perhaps it was time to allow Haneul to visit his father.
The doctor had said that Jeonghan was in a better physical state, and the members could be there to support him emotionally. The thought was risky, but it also had the potential to bring together father and son after a long separation.
With a sense of trepidation, Seungcheol gently placed his hand on Haneul's head, drawing the child's attention. "Haneul," he said softly. "The doctor told me that your father is awake and getting better."
Haneul's eyes widened with excitement at the news. "Daddy awake?" he asked eagerly.
"Yes," Seungcheol said with a faint smile. "He's awake now."
He let the news sink in for a moment, watching as the child processed the information. Then, he gently asked, "Do you want to see him?"
Immediately, Haneul's expression lit up with joy. He nodded his head vigorously, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Yes," he said eagerly. "I want to see daddy!"
Seungcheol couldn't help but be touched by the child's enthusiasm. He took a deep breath, readying himself for what was to come.
"Alright," he said softly. "Let's go."
Seungcheol carried Haneul in his arms the entire way to the medical wing. The child was practically squirming with excitement, his small hands holding tightly on to Seungcheol's clothes. His heart was pounding in his chest as they drew closer to the room where Jeonghan was being held.
He could already hear the sound of the others' voices as they spoke softly to the awakening man. The sound was like a beacon drawing him in.
As Jeonghan eyes flickered opened, the first thing he was aware of was the faint beeping of a heart monitor. The sound was slow and steady, a comforting rhythm that seemed to fill the room.
He struggled to focus his gaze, his eyes darting around the room. The white walls and the medical equipment were all unfamiliar to him. He was lying on a bed, the sheets cool against his skin.
Jeonghan thoughts were hazy, fragmented. His memory was clouded by the fog of recent events. He tried to remember how he got here.
Slowly, his eyes adjusted to the brightness of his surroundings. He could make out the faint outline of the medical devices on the table next to him, the IV tubes running from his arm. The faint smell of antiseptic hung in the air.
He turned his head slowly, his gaze finally falling on the small group of people gathered around him. The familiar faces of Scoups members came into focus, their expressions a mixture of relief and worry.
The members had pulled up chairs to sit near his bedside. They looked tired and stressed, their expressions filled with concern. He could see the exhaustion in their eyes, the lines of worry etched on their faces.
He couldn't help but feel a small sense of guilt as he looked at them. He knew he had put them all through a lot with his sudden accident.
Despite his fatigue, Jeonghan was acutely aware of the absence of one person from the group. His heart sank slightly as he realized that SCoups was not among the members gathered around him. He wondered if it was deliberate on his behalf or just a coincidence.
With the support of Joshua's gentle hands, Jeonghan managed to sit up in his bed. The world dipped slightly as he rose, his body still exhausted from the trauma of the accident. He took a few deep breaths to steady himself, hoping that the dizziness would fade soon.
Once he was able to focus his gaze again, he looked up at the members' faces, trying to offer a reassuring smile. "Hey."
His voice was rough with exhaustion. He cleared his throat awkwardly, trying again. "How long was I asleep?"
Joshua answered him, his voice soft. "Four days."
Four days. The weight of the statement sank in for Jeonghan as he processed it. He had been unconscious for four whole days.
He winced slightly at the realization. The accident must have been much worse than he realized. His muscles felt weak and strained from the lack of movement. His mind was foggy and disoriented, as if he had awoken from a long and restless sleep. He could feel the lingering tension in his body, the soreness in his bones.
As he opened his mouth to speak again, another thought suddenly struck him, one that caused his heart to race with newfound panic. He froze for a split second, his mind racing with questions.
"Where is he?" he asked frantically, struggling to keep his voice steady. He could already hear his own heartbeat racing in his ears, his mind consumed by worry. He had been unconscious for four days. What if something had happened to him during that time?
Just as the words "Where is he?" were leaving his throat, the door to his room opened softly. His eyes instantly went wide with shock at the sight that greeted him. SCoups was standing in the doorway, his tall frame looming there with the small figure of a toddler in his arms.
He stared in disbelief. This was the last thing he had expected. His heart was pounding in his chest as he watched the two step inside.
Haneul's face immediately lit up with joy when he saw his father sitting up in the bed. He squirmed in Seungcheol's arms, reaching his small hands out towards Jeonghan.
"Daddy," he shrieked with glee.
Jeonghan's heart melted instantly at the sight of his son's smiling face. Despite his own exhaustion, he immediately reached out his arms to take his son from Seungcheol. It was like a piece of him was finally back in place.
The members watched with wide eyes as Jeonghan launched himself out of his bed, practically knocking over Joshua in his haste to reach his son.
He had no thought for his own condition or the fragile state of his body. His entire focus was on Haneul, and his desperation to touch his child again. He took him from Seungcheol's arms with trembling hands. He wrapped his arms around his little body, holding him as tightly as his strength allowed.
He buried his face in his child's hair, inhaling the familiar scent of his skin. His heart was bursting with a million different emotions.
He wanted to laugh and cry and scream all at once. He was so happy to finally be reunited with his child. He pulled away slightly, taking in his son's smiling face with tears in his eyes.
"Are you," he said softly, his voice choked with emotion. "Are you okay?"
