Flower of Change

         "Satori, it's time to eat." His mother says, peering in at her red haired boy.

         "No thanks. I'm not hungry." He says, moving a toy truck across the carpet.

         "Don't give me that Satori, you haven't had anything today." His mother frowns.

         "I don't want to eat it. I heard their screams. I don't want to eat something that screams." He responds.

         "... Very well." She says coldly, shutting the door.

~~~~~
         "Okay. Last day of middle school! Are you excited?" Your dad grins, kneeling down beside you.
          "Yeah. I'm going to hug my friends goodbye and tell them to have a good summer! I got them all flowers." You grin going to the cooler that you had set up to transfer the flowers around.
          "That's my sweet girl. Go have fun." He waves as you head out. You hum happily pulling the cooler behind you cheerfully.
           "___!" A call sounds as you reach the school that was so close to home.
           "Hi!" You wave as your friends approach.
          "What do you got?" Sharma asks curiously.
          "Flowers. Farewell and congratulations." You hum, opening it.
          "Aw! They're so pretty! I'm going to give mine to my mom! It's her birthday today!" She gushes, picking out a rose. "Thanks ___! Your flowers are so pretty!" She grins. Your other friends each pick out one.
          "There's a lot left. Are you going to give one to the teachers too?" Marley asks.
          "Mhm. Let's make today so much fun!" You chime.
          "Yes!"
          It goes normally, you pass out flowers to the teachers. Lunch time comes and you're left with one last one. A protea. You had hidden this one because you had a certain person in mind. You swallow, leaving the cafeteria to go to the courtyard where other groups and loners eat.
           This flower's meaning was perfect for him. The redhead that sat alone always and puts on a cheerful smile when interacting with others. You reach him and he pauses looking over and sitting up.
         "Ah. Hi ___, today's almost over. Are you excited?" He asks, smiling up at you.
         "Mhm. Happy last day Tendo." You hold out the flower to him nervously. He blinks and takes it. "G-Goodbye!" You swiftly turn to leave.
          "Protea… Diversity and courage. The flower of change." He murmurs, you stop and look back in surprise at him. He smiles happily, "Thanks ___." He breathes, touching his cheek to it.
          "No problem-" You pause as a cloud passes in front of the sun, an odd rainbow glimmer going over the courtyard. You were in awe but a tingling sensation surges through your body and you feel a warmth spread over your back, looking back you freeze. A pair of sunset colored yet transparent fairy like wings stretch out. "What…?" You murmur stunned.
           "Fairy…" Tendo whispers, standing up with big eyes.
           "___! Whoa! What's that? Did you get dressed up-" Everyone in the courtyard that had stopped to stare suddenly fall unconscious as a sparkling wind passes through.
           "___!” Your dad calls rushing over and scooping you up.
           "Dad! What's going on?" You ask looking around in alarm.
           "I'm sorry sweetie. I forgot to tell you! We're moving in with your mom today!" He says swiftly leaving the school with you.
           "I have a mom?"
           So that's how your last day of middle school abruptly ended. And this was also the day you moved far away from the place you had grown up in. You don't remember the trip since you fell asleep, but when you awoke you were in a brand new place, stopping in front of a nice sized home with a massive oak tree in the backyard.
            "We're here! Ready to meet your mom?" Your dad asks lightly.
            "I guess…?" You frown. He didn't stop to explain anything so you still weren't sure what was going on. You glance at the neighboring building which looked like a very well kept shrine. You spot two heads peeking out but they swiftly duck out of sight as you follow your dad to the door.
            "Okay… Here we go… Autumn! I'm home!" He calls walking in. You follow after him with your bag, peering around the tidy house carefully.
            "Darling!" A small voice chimes and a ball of light crashes into the side of his head. You stiffen as the five inch tall woman with fluttering wings kisses his cheek before pulling away and fixing you with a tearful gaze. "Welcome home ___!”
           "... What the fuck…" You murmur dropping your bag.
          "Language ___!" Your dad scolds. "Sorry honey, her wings came out during school and… It was a bit of a mess." He sighs to her. "I had to use the scroll you left me too."
          "That's okay dear." She pats his shoulder before fluttering up to you. "Okay…. Ask away." She smiles.
          "... What are you?"
          "A fairy."
          "And dad?"
          "Human."
          "So I'm…?"
          "A fairy and human hybrid."
          "Do you get bigger?"
          "I do not."
          "Then how…"
          "Let's save that one for another time."
          "... What do I do now?"
          "Live here and accept who you are." She cups your face with her little hands. "I've missed you." She kisses your forehead happily. "Come on, I'll show you to your room!" She swiftly guides you up the stairs to a spiral staircase and to a large room. It was already furnished with a couch, large bed, well stocked writing desk and a tall bookshelf. "What do you think? I picked it all out myself." She says nervously.
           "I love it. Is this my new room?" You look at her as she flutters at eye level. She nods happily at that, tears falling like pieces of glitter. "Are you okay?" You ask softly.
           "I'm so happy you're finally here. I thought for sure if you only took after your father I would only be able to visit in your dreams…" She sniffs. "I know this is selfish. But I'm so happy you're a true hybrid. Even if you had to leave your old life behind… I'm glad you're here."
            "I can't go back…?" You frown.
            "No. Even if you did, that spell took memories of you away." She tells you.
            Oh… No one would remember you? That made you sad. But she looks so happy to have you there, and you've always wanted to meet your mom. You would just have to forgive her for this.
           "Oh.. Okay then… I guess I can make some new friends when I go to my new school." You offer a small smile.
            "I'm so happy! We have neighbors your age! You should go meet them tomorrow! I'll let you unpack. Dinner will be done soon!" She gushes before zipping downstairs in a blink of an eye. You sigh quietly and start to unpack.
           "I finally went to talk to him and he won't even remember…"
~~~~~

          As he returns home, he walks in, being immediately greeted by his mom sniffing at him. "You smell of fairy magic! Did you see one? Did you catch it?" She gasps hopeful.

          "Of course he didn't. Can't you tell? He still has no magic power." His dad scoffs turning away. "What a disappointment." He mutters.

          "... Satori. You can't keep fighting this. You're the rare attribute. You should be strong. But as long as you…" His mom trails off.

          "As long as I don't eat fairies I'll never become strong… Right?" He guesses lightly, brushing past. "I know mom." He murmurs going to his room and closing the door, leaning back against it, pulling the protea from his backpack to look at it. "Courage…"
