Chapter Two

Gil made his way up to Janet's room. He wanted to check on her before they went to bed. As he hit the corner of the hallway he noticed someone standing with her in her doorway. He ducked out of view just as Denzel passed him on his way back to the elevators.

He stood there for a moment in disbelief but didn't want to jump to conclusions. Naturally he didn't waste anytime trying to figure it out. Just as Janet was about to shut the room door, Gil came into view.

"Gil, hey." She said. "What are you doing up here?" She asked and invited him inside.

"Well I came to check on you. Clarke was worried sick about you and frankly, so am I?" He said. She shooed him with her hands and she grabbed a cold bottle of water from the fridge.

"I'm fine."

"The way I saw you earlier was not fine." He narrowed his eyes at her. "What was Denzel doing leaving your room this late?"

She looked at him over her shoulder.

"Everyone is jet lagged and can't sleep. So don't say "this late" like you aren't just as wide awake as the rest of us." She said. "And if you must know, he had some concerns about his performance tonight that he wanted to address with me."

"Don't you think he should've come to me for that?" Gil said.

"Yes, but he just thought maybe he needs to work on the chemistry between us on the stage." She said and sipped from her water.

"I've known you long enough to know that you are not one to have your "needs" go unattended." He said. "Promise me this is nothing."

He took a seat on the couch in front of her. She looked him in the eyes.

"It's nothing Gil. Now go to bed, so I can go to bed." She said and kissed him on the head. Her phone lit up on the couch beside him. He picked it up and studied it for a moment. He turned the screen towards her.

Shawn : I can't wait to see you again 💜

Janet snatched her phone from him.

"My business is non of your business Gil okay. You had no right."

"You have been weird lately and since when do we hide things from each other? You do remember Clarke right? You're fiancé back home?" He said, his tone was dripping with sarcasm.

"Don't talk to me like that." She said sitting on the coffee table in front of him.

"Have you slept with her?"

"Gil no!" She said, standing up, as she started to pace back and forth. "We just went out to dinner once. She showed up at one of the shows. You guys were all occupied and I saw a chance to sneak away. So I did, but I swear nothing happened." She said looking at him. Gil motioned for Janet to have a seat next to him.

"Dunk, you have been down this road with Shawnette before and honey from the outside looking in, it was a shit fest. Please don't do this to Clarke."

"Gil, I haven't done anything. It's completely innocent. We're just two old friends catching up and that's all there is to it."

He just gazed at her for a minute. There was so much more he wanted to say but he was too tired to argue. He stood up and Janet walked him to the door.

"Did you tell Clarke about Vegas yet?" He asked. Janet shook her head. Gil smacked his lips. "You have been promising her time for you guys and your work load is continuing to grow. She needs to know that and since its all "innocent" with you and Shawnette, you need to tell her about that too."

"I know... I'm going to tell her, I just want to wait until we get back." She said. "She doesn't understand what all this means to me Gil."

"Have you given her the chance to?" He asked. Janet remained quiet. "I'm gonna go try to sleep. I love you." He said and held his arms open.

"I love you too." Janet hugged him tight. He pulled back and looked at her.

"Bitch I swear to our lady god, if you let Shawnette mess things up with Clarke I'm gonna kick your ass myself." He said with a straight face. Janet laughed sleepily.

"Yes dad now goodbye." She said playing shoving him out the door. Janet watched as he made his way back to the elevators. He looked over his shoulder and gestured that he was watching her. She laughed, waved and waved as he got on to the elevator.

Janet she closed the door leaned against it and took a deep breath. She looked at the text from Shawn and shook her head.

"What the fuck are you doing Janet?" She asked herself and headed for the bedroom. She laid down in bed and just as she closed her eyes, her phone began to ring.

"Hello?" She said.

"Sup Boo." Shawn said. "Did you get my text?"

"I did actually. Gil saw it too." Janet said. Shawn laughed. He never cared much for her.

"Ooh Gil, how is my old friend?" She asked.

"I would use the word friend loosely and he's good. He has been my right hand man, ever since you quit."

"I would use the word quit, loosely if I were you..." She said. Janet rolled her eyes but didn't care enough to argue. "It was really nice to see you last week." She said and Janet smiled.

"It was good to see you too. It's been too long and I've missed you."

"Oh yeah? Tell me how much..." She said flirtatiously. Janet laughed.

"Goodnight Shawn." She said and hung up. She smiled, fluffed her pillow and pulled the covers up all around her.

It seemed like just as she dozed off, the alarm began to go off. Janet decided to sleep through breakfast but was up and ready when it was time to head to the stadium. She checked her phone to see if she'd received anything from Clarke. Nothing yet, but there was a another text from Shawn.

Shawn: I'd love to see you again when you get back. Name the time and place and I promise I'll be there. Have a great show tonight beautiful.

Janet pushed her phone into her bag just as Gil approached her in the lobby.

"You look like you haven't slept."

"Ditto." She responded.

"Good thing I don't have to be on stage tonight then huh." He said, winked and blew her a kiss. He was clearly joking but it upset her anyway. He sat down next to her. "I'm sorry, I'll lay off. You gonna get through tonight girl?" She looked at him, smiled slightly and nodded but Gil wasn't convinced.

"I'm ready. I promise, but I'm sleeping the entire plane ride home. We're leaving straight from the venue right?"

"Yup, you'll be home by dinner tomorrow night." Gil said. She leaned forward, rested her
head in her hands for a moment then glanced at him again. "Let's do this." She said.

SOTW3

The show came and went. The time difference made it all feel like a dream.

As they rested on the flight back, everyone was sleeping except Gil and Janet. He snapped a quick picture of her as she worked quietly trying not to wake anyone.

"You should be trying to rest woman." He said. She looked up and smiled.

"I know, I just need to finish this and I'm almost done."

"What are you working on?"

"My Rock Hall speech." She said and smiled nervously. "I can't believe it's finally happening."

"It should've happened a long time ago. You deserve this and I can't wait to see you up there." He said beaming. Gil looked down at his phone and scoffed.

"Who are you texting?" Janet asked.

"Shawn." He said calmly. Janet stood up and grabbed his phone. She said and looked at the messages between them.

"Why are you starting stuff?" She said and tossed his phone back on to his lap as she reclaimed her seat.

"I'm not, I'm just letting her know how I feel." He said.

"Gil can you please just let this go. It's none of your concern."

"The hell its not. I was there for all of it." He said raising his voice. "I refuse to let her come in and try to do this to you all over again."

"You don't know everything Gil. I wasn't exactly an innocent party either."

"I know that bitch, I was young not dumb, but hashtag team Janet all day everyday." He said. "Have you told her about Clarke?"

"What?" She asked.

"Does she know you have a fiancé Dunk?" He said louder.

"Shhhh." She said and looked around them. Everyone was out cold. "It just never came up, we didn't talk about our personal life much, besides talking about our children."

"Mmhm well she obviously thinks you're single and if she does know, she doesn't care. You are heading into real dangerous territory Ms. Jackson. I suggest you be careful." He said.

Janet rolled her eyes and folded her arms. Fucking Gil. She said to herself but she knew he was right. If she was going to try to be friends with Shawn again, Clarke at least deserved to know their history first.
