Chapter Six
Clarke glance at the time on her phone. It was nearly noon and Janet still wasn't awake. She assumed Janet just got wrapped up in her work that she hadn't slept the night before . So she didn't want to disturb her.
The growling in her stomach made brunch sound like a good idea so she headed for the kitchen.
The aroma of the food filled the bedroom and Janet's eyes opened slowly. She blinked a few times and sat up in bed. She let her head fall into her hands, feeling the aching in her temples. A few shots in and she'd still kept going.
"Fuck." She said under her breath as she forced herself out of bed and headed for the shower.
Clarke heard the water going and decided to play some soft music in the background. She felt she'd been completely out of line the night before. She felt like she'd ruined their first night alone and she wanted to make it up.
Clarke set the table and started squeezing fresh juice. Just as she'd filled their glasses Janet walked slowly into the kitchen wearing one of her t-shirts. Clarke turned and smiled.
"Hey you. Wow, that shirt never looked that good on me." She said as she reach for her hand. Clarke pulled her close. Janet hair was still damp and smelled of coconut. "I missed you last night."
"I missed you too." Jane said. Clarke leaned in and kissed her. They fell deep into the kiss and Clarke lifted her up on to the counter. Her finger tips grazed her center through her panties. Janet gasped as she grabbed Clarke's wrist.
"Baby, can we just eat. I'm starving. I drank and I didn't eat and I'm just feeling a little under the weather." Clarke stopped and let her hands fall to her sides.
"Yeah of course, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have..."
"No baby, you're good. You're perfect, I just need to eat and I'll feel a lot better." She said.
Clarke helped her down and pulled up a chair for her.
"We didn't have much in the house so, I did my best." She said and smiled.
"No this is great," Janet touched her face. "Really, thank you."
They ate their food, mostly in silence. Clarke desperately wanted to know more about what Vegas would mean for them, but she didn't want to just bombard her with questions. So she decided to wait and let Janet finish her food in peace.
(Later that evening)
Clarke buttoned her shirt in the mirror. She watched Janet's reflection behind her. Janet wondered around the room, putting the finishing touches on her make up and hair.
Clarke never understood how someone so beautiful could look so sad. She couldn't help but to feel like it was her fault. She tiEd her bandanna and walked over Janet. She still hadn't gotten into her dress yet.
"Think Jimmy will approve?" Clarke asked and posed.
"I'm sure he'll love it. You look amazing." Janet said and smiled.
"Baby, I know something is bothering you. I can feel you. Will you please talk to me?" Clarke gazed at her with concern.
"Clarke I'm fine. I'm just trying to finish getting ready." She said.
"Okay, I'll be in the living room then. She said and walked out.
Janet watched her leave the room. She felt tears coming to her eyes and hurried to pull herself together before she could ruin her make up.
The pulled up to Terry's house were cars lined the street and driveway. It was he and his wife's anniversary and they were throwing a huge bash.
Everyone greeted them as they came through the doors and made their way around the room. Emory and Max were there as well as a number of colleagues, family and friends.
"Want another drink baby?" Clarke asked. Janet was on her third.
"Yes please." Clarke couldn't remember the last time she'd seen her drunk but she was driving so she figured... why not let her have fun.
The front doors opened again and people around the door was shouting their greetings from every direction. Once the crowd cleared. Shawnette could be seen clear across the room.
Janet's heart was pounding as she stared in her direction. Shawnette glanced at her and headed for the restroom just as Clarke returned with her drink.
"Here you go honey." Clarke said.
"Can you actually just hold that? I'm gonna go to the restroom." Janet said. Clarke nodded.
"I'll be right here."
Janet made it to the restroom in time to stand right next to Shawnette in line. She was up next. They didn't say anything. They just glanced back and forth at each other. The restroom door opened and a girl walked out.
Shawnette walked in and as she tried to close the door, Janet walked in and locked it behind her.
"Why are you here?" Janet asked. She demanded to know.
"Terry's my friend too J. He invited me." Shawnette answered.
"But you knew Clarke I would be here."
"So I'm suppose to stop my life, because your girl is here... I ain't doing that boo." She approached her slowly and backed her into the wall. She leaned to kiss her. Janet pushed her away with force.
"Stop it!" She said. Shawnette smirked and pulled her closer.
"Why when it's what we both want?"
Janet's face was flushed, her body reacting to Shawnette's every advance. She freed herself from Shawnette's grasp, pulled the door open and stormed out, nearly knocked Emory and Max down on the way out. They looked back towards the restroom just a Shawnette peeked her head out.
Shawnette shrugged.
"Some people just don't know how to wait their turn." She said and closed the door.
Emory turned to Max.
"Don't babe." Max said and shook her head. "Don't start making shit up in that crazy head of yours."
"But that looked weird right? I should tell Clarke." She said.
"No, you shouldn't. That is not our business."
"But Clarke is my friend."
"So don't go filling your friend's head up with things you have no proof of. It was weird, leave it at that." Max said and touched her face before giving her a kiss.
The party wasn't an all nighter and guests left as late as midnight.
Janet was again quiet for the car ride home but once they were inside, it was clear where her mind was. Without saying a word, she took Clarke by the hand and lead her into the bedroom, where she stood in front of the bed and began removing her clothes slowly. Once she was down to nothing but her panties, she crawled on to the bed and laid back.
Clarke removed her jacket, looked down at her and smiled.
Janet slowly pulled off her panties revealing a damp spot in the center. She threw them in Clarke's direction.
"Damn... it's like that?" Clarke said.
"Just like that baby." Janet said as she watched Clarke strip down to nothing and join her on the bed.
Clarke opened her eyes in their dark room. She couldn't see anything, but she could hear Janet. She was crying.
"Baby?" She said as she reached to turn on the lamp.
"Don't turn on the light, please." Janet said, Clarke's eyes adjusted to the darkness enough to make out Janet's silhouette and she joined her on the floor in front of the bed. She sat behind her and wrapped her arms around her. Janet rested her head against Clarke as she continued to cry.
"Baby, please tell me what wrong. I can't fix this if you don't talk to me." Clarke begged. Janet only seemed to cry harder. So Clarke didn't talk. She just held her as she cried on and off for most of the night.
The next morning Gil went to knock on Janet's door but realized it was slightly open. He pushed it and walked inside.
"Hello?" He said and headed straight for the bedroom. He peeked in and smiled.
Clarke and Janet were fast asleep on the floor with blankets and pillows all around them. Janet's head rested on Clarke's chest. Gil nudged her gently.
"Dunk." He said quietly. She opened her eyes and lifted her head then looked down at Clarke. She put her fingers to her lips and motioned for Gil to meet her in the kitchen.
"Morning." She said as she took a seat at the table across from him.
"Morning. I take it you forgot we had a breakfast date to talk "Metamorphosis"." He said folded his arms.
"Shit was that this morning? I'm so sorry. I went to Jimmy's party and had a few drinks."
"Janet we don't have a lot of time to put this together. We need to get going." He said.
"I know, I'm sorry okay? Let me go get my phone, I'll order us lunch and we'll get started. Deal?" She said.
"Okay." He responded. She stood to walk away. "Are you going to see her again because I know you haven't told Clarke. She was texting me about much fun she had hanging with Shawnette Heard last night at Jimmy's place."
Janet turned and looked at him with irritation.
"Look, I'm not gonna talk about this with you right now Gil." She said and glanced down the hallway towards her closed bedroom door.
"Well then when is a good time because you're juggling people hearts here, including your own." He said and stood up. "Janet... please don't do this. The longer you wait, the harder it will get."
"I can't Gil." She said and walked away.
Clarke was coming out of the bedroom before she could get to the door.
"There you are." Clarke said and smiled as she tried to pull her close. Janet was resistant. "Everything okay Janet?" She asked sweetly.
"I'm fine. Gil's here to work on Vegas stuff. I'm just gonna grab some things so we can get started." She said.
Clarke nodded.
"Okay. Well are you hungry? I can run out and get us some lunch. No need to work on an empty stomach."
"That would be great baby, thank you." Janet said and touched Clarke's shoulder on the way into the bedroom.
Clarke headed into the kitchen and greeted Gil with a hug. He did his best to put on a smile but he felt sad for her.
Shawnette and Janet had a very long history and he was there for a big part of it. They were trouble anytime they came near each other. He'd seen them ruin multiple relationships for each other and he hoped that this wouldn't turn out the same as always.
"Hungry?" Clarke asked.
"Starved honey, but how's daddy doing today" He asked. Clarke smiled.
"I'm good thank you." She looked back towards the kitchen entry and lowered her voice. "It's Janet I'm worried about. She's been crying a lot the past few days and being kind of distant." Clarke didn't realize that Janet was just in the hallway, listening. "Something is off Gil." Clarke finished.
"Well what do you think it is?" Gil asked. He didn't know how to respond to what she'd just said, but was now curious to see what her answer would be.
Dammit Gil. Janet thought to herself and braced for Clarke's response.
"I'm not entirely sure." Clarke responded. "But I'm starting to think it's me. Maybe its the way I reacted to the residency." She sat down next to him. "I know how important this is to her Gil, I promise I do. In fact I envy it."
Gil looked at her curiously.
"What do you mean by that?" He asked.
"Well you know her better than anyone. You've seen that look in her eye when she is performing... the joy she illuminates when she is on that stage."
Gil nodded.
"That passion she shares for her art and her fans... I wish just once she would have that same passion for me." Clarke explained.
Janet felt her heart sink into her chest. She waited for Gil's response, but the room fell silent.
Gil opened his mouth to speak. He knew exactly what he wanted to say but he couldn't do it. So he remained quiet.
Janet finally came from around the corner and interrupted the silence.
"Lets get to work... like you said before, we don't have a lot of time." She said and began setting her things up on the table like she hadn't heard a thing.
