Chapter Seven

Janet sat quietly on the bed and watched Clarke struggle to get her suitcase closed. She laughed quietly, but loud enough to catch Clarke's attention.

Clarke glanced up at her and smiled.

"What?" She said with a grunt as the zipper finally gave and it closed completely.

"I told you to get a bigger suitcase. In our line of work, you need more space baby."

"I know, I know." She said and laid across the bottom of their bed. "So what are you gonna do for a week while I'm gone?" Clarke asked.

Janet shrugged.

"Besides Vegas stuff, I'm not sure. Gil has a full plate and is working hard on this. I finally have a day off, which is today and you're leaving." She said and pouted.

"I'm going to be so bored without you though."

Janet laughed.

"Please... it's gay pride and you're their star this year. Photo shoots, a magazine cover and your own float. You'll have plenty of pretty girls distracting you I'm sure." Janet said as she leaned back against their headboard and folded her arms.

Clarke crawled over to her and laid her head in Janet's lap.

"No what would I want with any of those girls, when I have the most beautiful fiancé in the world waiting at home just for me?" Clarke said, gazed up at her and smiled.

Janet shifted Uncomfortably against the sheets beneath her. Fiancé. She said to herself.

Clarke noticed, sat up on the edge of the bed and looked back at her.

"I'm gonna go get some ice cream, do you want any?" Janet asked as she got out of the bed and headed for the kitchen. Clarke sat for a moment, got up and followed.

She walked into the kitchen where Janet stood infront of the fridge, looking down at her phone.

Clarke stood there for a moment.

"Do you not want to marry me anymore?" She asked.

Janet glanced over at her. The sad expression on Clarke's face made her stomach hurt. She turned around to face her.

"Why would you ask me that?"

"Because we never talk about it. At first I thought it was because Joseph had passed, then more time went by and..."

"Don't bring my father into this." Janet said sternly.

"I'm not trying to upset you, it just seems like-"

"Well you have. You know how hard this has been for me. Not to mention I have a lot on my plate." Janet said and leaned back against the counter.

"Too much to fit me in?" Clarke asked. She turned around and walked out of the room.

Janet didn't chase her. She stayed in the kitchen. Her face was hot and she knew she was going to cry. She covered her face with her hands and tried to keep it together but it was too late. Her hands were already wet with her tears as she forced back sobs.

"Baby..." Clarke said. She'd come back into the kitchen. Janet couldn't look at her. She kept her face covered. "I'm sorry, please forgive me. I- I don't want to argue before I leave tonight. I don't want to be away for a week with us being mad at each other." She stepped closer and gently wrapped her arms around Janet, who couldn't hold back her sobs anymore. "I also don't want to pressure you. You're not ready and I understand. This is not just about me, it's about you too J and... what I'm trying to say as, take as long as you need. I'm not going anywhere whether we're married or not, I'm yours."

Janet turned to face her and wrapped her arms around Clarke's neck as she cried into her shoulder.

The rest of their day was lazy. They mostly lounged, fed each other ice cream and fresh fruit in bed, while listening to music in the background. Clarke tossed a grape into her mouth and glanced at Janet.

"You should go hangout while I'm gone." Clarke suggested.

"Babe I have way too much work to do."

"I know, but all work and no play is not good for you. You need to go and have some fun. When is the last time you just had time for yourself without me or the baby? Go out."

"Where would I go? And with who?" She said and laughed. "The kids are all off on other jobs, Gil is busy and doesn't seem to have the time or want to talk to me much these days. I'm positive he is upset with me about..." she hesitated. "Something... I don't know. Literally I'd be going out alone, well with Joey and Preston and trust there will be plenty of camera flashes." She said.

Clarke looked at the time. She needed to head out in an hour. She got up and went into the closet and came out with sweats, a t-shirt and sneakers.

"Why don't you go out with Shawnette?" She suggested.

Janet began to cough. She'd just taken another bit of strawberry.

"Shawn and- , Shawnette and I are not friends. That why I avoided her at Terry's party." Janet said as she sipped from her water.

"I know, I mean I don't know because you never talk about it, but she talked to me a lot at the party and I just think maybe you two should talk." Clarke said as she stepped into her sweats and pulled her shirt over her head.

"She talked you about me?"

"Yes." Clarke nodded and took a knee to tie her shoes.

Janet sat up straight against the headboard so that she could still see Clarke's face.

"Well what did she say?"

Clarke stood up.

"She said that she misses you. She misses the way things used to be with you guys." Clarke paused. "She misses her friend J. Maybe you can just have lunch with her. Let her explain herself, see if you guys can hash things out. She asked for my permission to take you out." Clarke looked down at her feet. "She gave me her number so I texted her earlier and told her that I'd convince you to go out and have dinner with her... tonight." She looked at her phone. It was almost 6. "She'll be here at 8 so you should probably start getting ready too, cause you take forever." Clarke said trying to slide a poorly chosen joke in at the end. Janet looked furious. "Soooooo... you're mad?"

Janet stood up and walked over to her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. In other words she checked herself very quickly, after all, Clarke was completely naive to anything concerning Shawnette. Then she remember Clarke's apology in the kitchen, and the anger melted away just as fast as it had come. The only people she could be mad at is herself and Shawnette.

"I'm sorry, this caught me off guard. I just needed a second to process it. This was a really sweet gesture, but please don't ever do something like this again without talking to me first. Promise?"

Clarke nodded. She realized, now, how bad of an idea this was, especially because she doesn't know what caused their friendship to end.

"I promise. I am so sorry." She said. Janet laughed nervously.

"It's okay, I'll deal with it, but we've got to get you going. Preston is outside waiting for you and so is Joey."

"Joey?" Clarke asked a bit confused.

Janet smiled and nodded.

"Yeah... he said... and I quote, "The kid is making a name for herself. I gotta make sure my family is protected."

Clarke put her hand to her chest and smiled.

"For real? He said that?"

"You're in there kid." Janet said jokingly in Joey's voice.

Clarke pulled her close and kissed her. She grabbed her overstuffed suitcase and threw her arm over Janet shoulder. "He was harder than your parents." She joked as they walked down the hallway to the door.

Janet sat on the couch in the living room. She looked at the time and when the clock struck eight... her doorbell rang. She looked towards the door, got up and calmly walked towards it. She opened it and there stood Shawnette, holding food and a single red rose.

Shawnette smirked. Janet stood there in a pair of black sweats and Clarke's Penny shirt.

"So I guess you need more time to get ready?" Shawnette said.

Janet glared at her, slapped her as hard as she could and tried to slamthe door but Shawnette walked right in behind her.

"Janet stop!" She said, but Janet kept walking. She followed her into the living room where Janet opened the sliding door to the patio and pool, nearly slamming Shawnette's hand as she tried to close it. Shawnette sat the food and rose down and closed the door behind them. Janet stood with her back to her for a moment. "J look at me."

Janet turned to face her.

"Why are you doing this?" Janet asked. "Playing with her like this, she doesn't deserve it. She loves me and she is good to me..." Janet was quiet for a second. "Shawn I don't want to hurt her."

Shawnette saw her eyes go soft. She walked toward her slowly and pulled her close.

"I miss you." She said as she gently brushed the hair from Janet's face. Shanette's fingers grazed her skin making Janet's breath grow shallow.

"Shawn, please." Janet said and closed her eyes as Shawnette brought her lips to her ear.

"I wanna hear you say it." She whispered.

Janet shook her head slowly.

"I can't." She replied. Shawnette kissed her earlobe as her hands caressed Janet's hips firmly.

"Say it." Shawnette repeated.

"I- I said you could have me anytime and anyplace." Janet's words shivered from her lips. She felt herself getting wet. Shawnette nodded.

"Well guess what J... I want you now." She said as she pushed past Janet's waistband and in to her wet panties. "And I think you want me too." Her finger grazed Janet's sex.

Janet gasped and closed her eyes for a moment. She looked into Shawnette's eyes.

"Take me somewhere." She said softly.
