Chapter Four

Things went back to normal very quickly at home. Clarke, Janet and Eissa had a normal routine of playing hide and seek all throughout the house. They slept in late, built forts for movie nights and made dinner every night, together as a family.

Their growing baby boy was with them a full two weeks before returning to London to be with his father. Although Janet was sad to see him go, it gave her and Clarke some much needed time alone.

Clarke relaxed in the living room as she enjoyed the humid breeze in the air. She gazed out at the water as she reflected on what her life had become.

Her thoughts went to Janet's big night. She'd underestimated the time she had to purchase her ticket to the event. Every seat in the building had been filled, but she beamed with pride at the photos taken from that night. Gil made sure to capture every moment for her. Her baby had made it in.

Janet peeked her head around the corner and smiled lovely at her.

"There you are." She said as she took a seat and snuggled close to Clarke. "Is everything okay baby?"

Clarke glanced at her, then back at the pictures and smiled.

"I'm just so proud. You're glowing in every picture Gil sent me." Janet blushed.

"Thank you. It was such a great honor, I'm just sad I couldn't share it with you." She said as she took Clarke's hand and kissed it.

Clarke reached over and pulled Janet onto her lap. She gently gripped her hips, gazed at her and smiled.

"We should go out tonight. Not to a club or anything, just some where nice, maybe catch some live music. What do you say?" Clarke asked with a hopeful smile. Janet nodded.

"I love that idea. Yes let's do that but I need to go to the studio first. Preston is on his way." She said and stood up.

"Well let me hurry and get dressed. I'll come with you." Clarke got up and headed for the bedroom. Janet close behind her.

"Baby, there is no rush. Take your time and get ready, I won't be long. I promise." She grabbed her purse and keys, then kissed Clarke. "If push comes to shove and I'm gone too long, just take the car and I'll meet you there."

Clarke pouted and gave her the saddest puppy dog eyes she could muster up. She grabbed her hand and pulled Janet close.

"You're so adorable. When we get home, there is something I need to discuss with you." Janet said.

"Is something wrong?" Clarke asked with concern.

"Everything is great, but I promise we'll talk about it later, when it's just us. I need to go though. I'll let you know when I'm heading your way." She said and laughed as Clarke showered her with kisses until she was out of the door.

It wasn't long before Preston had pulled into the studio parking lot where Gil was waiting outside for Janet to arrive.

He approached her with a smile. They hooked arms and walked towards the studio doors. Janet suddenly froze, her feet felt heavy against the concrete beneath them and she slipped from Gil's grasp. He turned to face her.

"What's wrong?" He asked.

"Am I doing the right thing Gil?"

"Not if you have doubts." He said. "The thing I admire about you the most, is that you never let anyone tell you what's best for you. You always follow your gut." He smiled at her sweetly. "Wherever you lead, I will forever follow... so what's your word Queen?"

Janet thought for a moment before she spoke again.

"You know, I've traveled all over the world and back for my fans. Let's bring them to me for a while."

Gil smiled and playfully bowed as he held the door for her to walk inside.

The Skype meeting with MGM was very direct and to the point. They listened attentively and took notes as Janet told them exactly what she wanted and expected. They knew how lucky that were to have her. So for her, the sky's the limit.

Janet did most of the talking but would glance in Gil's direction, and when she couldn't find the her words, he would take the reigns. Gil mostly just sat back and watched her in awe. He loved watching her handle business.

As soon as the video disconnected, Gil closed the laptop, sat back and sucked his teeth.

"What Queesh?" She said.

"The fuck do we have to audition for?" He asked.

"It's not an audition. Just think of it as the last stop for our SOTW tour. This feels big to me, like how it use to feel, you know?" She said as Gil nodded and agreed.

"Definitely. Things are changing. It feels like we're moving into a new era."

"Yeah... almost like we're in a metamorphosis sort of state." She said. They looked at each other in silence for a moment as smiles crept up on both their faces.

"Bitch you just named our show." He said and held his arms out. She stood up and took a seat on his lap. They embraced. "Ever since you shacked up, you never hold me like this anymore." He said and pouted. "I need some girl time but we can plan that later. Clarke is waiting for us, we should probably get going." He said and tapped her butt a few times as if to give her a kick start. Janet took the hint and stood up.

"I think I'm gonna stay here for a while. There is this melody that I can't get out of my head. I think it's leading me somewhere and I need to get it out or I'm gonna lose it."

"Thats exciting. I haven't heard you say that in a while. Well go let your creative juices flow and I'll keep daddy company until you're done." He said and kissed her cheek. "See you in a bit."

Janet walked up to the door leading to the recording studio. She took a deep breath, walked in and turned on the lights.

She took a look around and smiled. It was one of her favorite places to be. With all the touring she'd done the past few years, she couldn't find the time to write. She grabbed her notepad and pencil, walked over to the keyboard and sat down.

Janet softly hummed to herself and played it back a few times. Her hand had a mind of its own and the music became more clear as lyrics made their way on to the paper sitting in front of her.

Her eyes were closed as she played and sang the words aloud for the first time.

"God you still take my breath away." Someone said from behind her. Shawnette was standing in the doorway, shaking her head.

Janet jumped to her feet, startled and completely caught off guard.

"Shawn with the fuck!? You scared me!" She said as she held her hand to her chest and tried to calm herself. "That was private! At least have the decency to announce yourself." She closed her composition book in frustration. All the creative energy had left the room.

"I was just passing by. I saw Preston's ride out front and thought I'd come in and say hi. I guess I should've called first though." She said looking at the angry expression on Janet's face.

"Yes, you should have." She said.

"I'm sorry, I just needed to see you again." Shawn said as she stepped into Janet's personal space and reached for her hand.

"Please don't do that." Janet pleaded as she politely pushed Shawnette's hand away all the while trying to ignore her intense gaze that seemed to burn through her.

"I can't help myself." She said as she gently grabbed Janet's hips and pulled her closer.

"I said don't Shawn." Janet took a few steps away from her, putting space in between them. "Why did you come here?" She asked.

"Why haven't you returned my calls or texts?" Shawnette asked, answering her with a question.

"Why did you follow Clarke on Instagram?" Janet folded her arms. She was serious yet Shawnette still laughed quietly to herself.

"Why didn't you tell me you had a girlfriend?" Shawn asked, continuing to avoid the questions. Janet sighed in frustration.

"Because I know you. You already knew about her... Didn't you?"

"Of course I knew..." Shawnette finally confessed. "Everyone knows. You haven't tried to hide it. But if I'm being completely honest with you..." She said as she approached Janet again, slowly this time. "I don't give a shit about your girlfriend. The only thing I care about is this, right now." She said and leaned in to kiss her, only to have Janet turn away. Shawnette touched her chin, bringing her eyes back to hers. "Why you fighting this baby?" Janet didn't answer her. "Do you want me to go?" Shawn gazed at her with hopeful eyes.

Janet nodded.

"Yeah, I think you should." She said.

"Yeah bitch..." Gil said from the doorway. "Ski Daa Dil!" He said as he entered the room. "I knew I smelled a fucking snake."

Shawnette followed Gil with her eyes and smiled as he pushed past her and took his place in front of Janet. She looked past him and tried to make eye contact with Janet but she wouldn't look at her.

"Can you at least walk me outside please?" Shawnette asked.

"No!" Gil snapped. "Damn this bitch can't take a hint for shit." He said as he glanced back at Janet.

"Gil..." Janet said and touched his shoulder. "We'll all walk out together, okay?" Janet her grabbed her purse and keys, then lead the way.

Gil waited in the car. Janet could feel his eyes on them. She sat her purse down on the hood of Shawnette's car.

Shawnette reached for her hand again but she pulled it away and folded her arms across her chest.

"Shawn what do you want from me? Huh? After all this time, you show up at my show, and now unannounced again at my studio. Things are different. I'm not that girl you knew way back when... so stop treating me like I am."

"Well you sure are acting like her right now. Playing that hard to get game you love so much. Spend the night with me tonight. I'll show you some things that little girl can't." She said with a cocky grin.

Janet scoffed at her.

"You know I thought that you could be serious and real with me just this one time. You've always had this playboy attitude that you use to cover up how you're really feeling." She shook her head. "Grow up Shawnette, because the only little girl I see anywhere in sight, is standing right here infront of me."

Janet walked away leaving Shawnette calling her name in the distance. She got into the car with Gil. He pulled away fast and glanced at Shawnette in the rear view mirror.

"Bitch." He said under his breath as he watched her disappear behind them.
