Chapter Five
"There are a lot of people here Gil."
Janet said nervously as they pulled up across the street from the small theater. There was a line around the building.
"Yeah, I wouldn't even take you in there if Joey was here. What is Clarke thinking?" He said as he looked around.
He spotted Clarke waving him down from alley next to the building. It was out of sight from the small crowd forming on the side walk. Gil pulled up next to her slowly.
He got out to greet her and asked Janet to stay in the car.
"There are way to many people Clarke. Even if she wanted to go inside, we can't without Joey and Tony."
"Will you calm your pretty little tits" She said and laughed as he popped his tongue. "Before you go into your whole, her life is different speech, just hear me out. The owners are friends of mine. This door leads to a private area upstairs and we have it all to ourselves. Janet can dance, eat, drink and watch the whole show there and no one will ever even know she was here." She said as Gil looked at her with flirtatious eyes. "I took care of everything."
"Bitch you make me want a girlfriend." He said as he walk over to Janet's door. "If she's anything like you... I just might go deep sea diving." He joked and opened Janet's door. "No worries babe, daddy over here got us."
"Sure it's okay?" She said and stepped out. Janet locked eyes with Clarke and without saying anything, walked up to her, wrapped her arms around her neck and kissed her.
Gil looked around and noticed a few people crossing the street towards the alley.
"Okay love birds. We gotta get Dunk inside." He said. Clarke nodded, opened the door which lead to stairs and smiled.
"After you." She said. Gil took Janet's hand and led her inside. The upstairs revealed a beautiful private viewing area. Janet looked back at Clarke and clapped her hands excitedly. They had the entire space to themselves.
The bartender took their drink orders and they walked over to the balcony to look over the crowd. The chatter in the room was low but went silent as the host took the small stage to introduce their first performer.
It was a mixture of different talent and Janet's eyes were glued to the stage. Clarke watched her in awe, loving all the different expressions she'd make. She loved the way Janet would close her eyes at times, just to feel the music inside of her.
Janet glanced in her direction, feeling her gaze. She smiled as Clarke took her hand and kissed it. They looked over at Gil. He was over at the balcony dancing by himself.
"I needed this tonight. Thank you baby." Janet said. Clarke smiled.
"Of course." Clarke nodded her head in Gil's direction. "He misses you you know. He's been having a really hard time lately." Clarke said. "We text daily."
"Well he hides it well." Janet said and took a sip from her drink." He won't talk to me about it and I don't know why." She smiled as he walked towards her. "Having fun babe?"
"Considering I've only had one drink, I'm actually having a great time." He joked.
Clarke excused herself to the restroom and Gil took a seat next to Janet. He tried to avoid her eyes. She gazed at him, while tracing the rim of her glass with her finger tips.
"Why haven't you been talking to me about what's going on with you Gil? You used to tell me everything."
"Janet you're busy... you're busy and you have your own family and your own stuff to worry about." He explained.
"But you talk to Clarke. You tell her everything but keep me in the dark. I had no clue that you, Noah and Wade split up." She said as Gil turned away from her and tried blinking away his tears. "Gil, honey please talk to me."
"I'm fine Dunk, it was wack and it doesn't feel good but I'm fine. You should be more worried about telling Clarke about Vegas." He said.
"What about Vegas?" Clarke asked. He didn't notice she'd returned and was standing right behind them. Janet turned to face her and glanced back at Gil with irritation.
Janet stood up and walked over to her.
"Baby, I wanted to talk to you about it later when we got home but I guess now is as good a time as any." She took a deep breath and begin to explain. Once she'd told Clarke everything, she waited for a response but didn't get one. "You don't have anything to say?"
"What do you want me to say. You completely gave away all of our time." She said. "You promised me that you would take some time off for me and Eissa."
"Honey, this is different. I don't have to travel. I can stay in one place, do what I love and have you guys by my side." She said. Clarke scoffed.
"You won't have an ounce of time for us.. With rehearsals, meetings and trying to rest in between. When will we come first?"
"Clarke don't do that. You know you guys are the most important thing in the world to me."
"Then tell them no." She said.
"Clarke I can't do that. I'm in a contract."
"So you made this decision without talking to me first? That's great." She said and stood up to grab her keys. "Can we go? I'd like to finish this conversation at home, in private please." She asked. Janet nodded, stood up and headed for the stairs. Gil grabbed Clarke by the arm.
"So he did decided this without telling you. Yeah that may have been wrong but this is right for her. She needs this more than you know. It's not about the money, she needs this for her. So before you get all pissed off and start thinking about you, think about her." He said. Clarke didn't respond, she just walked away and followed Janet to the car.
The car ride was a quiet one. Neither woman said a word. Clarke looked over at Janet. Tears were streaming down Janet's cheeks. It made Clarke stomach hurt. She'd overreacted.
They pulled into the driveway and made their way inside, to the bedroom. Janet began to undress. Clarke watched her in silence. She was embarrassed of the way she'd acted and didn't know what to say.
"Baby?" She said. Janet didn't answer her. Clarke approached her slowly and reached for her hand. "Janet, I'm sorry." She said and held her hand to her heart. "Say something."
"I think that I left my purse and phone at the studio. I need to go get it."
"Well let me drive you."
"No Clarke, just give me a little space baby okay?" She said and grabbed her keys.
Clarke watched from the doorway as Janet drove away. She lingered for a moment. Their night didn't end anything like she thought it would.
Tears swell in Janet's eyes as she made her way back to the studio. She prayed her purse was there and couldn't believe she'd been so careless. She pulled into the parking lot to see Shawnette's car still there.
Janet got out. With confusion lining her face she approached Shawnette, who was sitting on the curb. Her knees were pulled to her chest, head resting on her knees and Janet's purse clutched between her hands.
"Shawn?" Janet said.
Shawnette raised her head sleepily and glanced up at her. "J, you left your purse on the hood of my car. I didn't know where to take it. I figured you'd remember and come back." She said as she stood up. "Here you go."
Janet smiled slightly and reclaimed her purse. "Thank you."
"You're welcome... you were right you know?" Shawnette said.
"Right about what?" Janet asked curiously.
"I do act that way to hide how I'm really feeling but it's only because my feelings for you have always scared me." She said. "That's the truth." She said and turned to get into her car.
"Shawn wait. I know that's because of me. I never made it easy for you." Janet reached for her hand. "I could use a drink. Jimmy keeps some inside. Share a glass with me?" She asked. Shawnette smiled and nodded.
"I'd like that."
Gil rubbed his eyes sleepily as he pulled into the parking lot of studio only to see that Janet and Shawnette's cars were still there. Clarke had been blowing up him all night and he promised he would go and check on her.
"Tha fuck is this?" He said to himself as he headed for the doors.
He walked inside and could hear music coming from the recording studio. He smiled, feeling a sense of relief. Maybe she'd been working on music all night. He knocked on the door... nothing. He knocked harder, still no response.
Finally he twisted the door knob, pushed it open and walked inside.
There they were, Janet and Shawnette, fast asleep in each other arms on the love seat in the corner of the room, covered in nothing but a blanket. He nudged Janet awake.
Her eyes were wide as he stood over her. "What time is it?" She asked in a panic and grabbed Shawnette's oversized t-shirt and slipped it over her head before being pulled out into the hallway, with Shawnette still asleep on the couch.
Gil just glared at her. She couldn't look him in the eyes.
"Gil can I just explain what happened?"She said.
"Go wake her and get dressed. I'm taking you home... I'll be in the car." He said and walked back out to the parking lot to wait.
Almost fifteen minutes had passed and he thought he'd have to go back inside but then the door opened and there they were. They didn't speak or say goodbye. Janet walked towards his car as Shawnette got into her car and pulled away.
They didn't say anything to each other the entire ride. Janet glanced at him occasionally but was too embarrassed to speak. As they pulled into her driveway, Gil turned the engine of and finally looked over at her.
"I cheated on them Dunk. Still when I say it out loud it sounds weird but the three of us were one. They never stepped outside of us not once and I didn't give them that same respect. I hurt them and I lost them." He said and shook his head. "I don't know what you're going to do and I'll will support you no matter what... but you should tell her the truth and that's all I will say about it."
Janet got out, approached her front door and opened it. Clarke was sitting, waiting for her on the couch. She stood up quickly as Janet entered the living room.
"Baby," Clarke said. "I've been thinking all night and I know the first step to losing some one is them asking you for space. So I'm just going to be completely honest with you. This was never about Vegas. I just miss you. That's the truth. We are apart more than were together. And I'm not trying to smother you. I just want to wake up and know that you'll be there next to me. I want to be able to just call out to you and hear you respond from the kitchen or the shower. I love hearing you with our little prince. And when you are just doing whatever and you start to sing, or hum... sometimes I just stop, close my eyes and listen." She shook her head. "I just miss you baby and I'll do whatever you want, I just don't want to lose you."
Janet just gazed at her, then burst in to tears. Clarke pulled her into an embrace and let her fall apart in her arms.
