Chapter Twelve~The End Is Near

Sam's POV

"Oh no, now is not the time for this," Thor warned and suddenly we were all hit with another memory, though I knew this would be the last one.

Hazel and Leo were still running through the mist and Paesiphaë was yelling out "thirty seconds". A big bulking mass of shadows stood guarding a set of elevator doors that resembled the ones in the Empire State Building.

Soon Hazel and Leo appeared at the other end of the chamber. The sorceress was gone and the elevator dinged. "Leo!" Hazel screamed. Leo took a screwdriver out of his tool belt and chucked it across the room. An impossible shot, but somehow he made it.

The elevator doors opened and out spilled two corpses. Hazel worked some Mist magic and the two bodies appeared behind her. Upon closer inspection I determined them to be Percy and Annabeth.

My eyebrows scrunched up in confusion. I caught Wanda's eyes and I could tell she understood the gist of what was going on here. That makes one of us.

"The chains," Annabeth rasped. Hazel startled and threw her sword at one set of chains. They shattered and so did the memory.

I gasped and blinked the memory out of my eyes. Looking around I could see that everyone was just standing stupidly and staring at the wall. Thor held the Golden Fleece in his hands.

"Guys, come on! We need to get the hell back to camp!" I started running, hoping the rest were following me. The tunnels started to rumble and shake. Dust rained down from the ceiling and pebbles danced on the floor.

"We've got structural damage! Thor's hammer ripped through here and it's gonna bring the whole place down!" Steve called out.

"Alrighty then. I don't want to take that path anyway," Thor stayed calmly. "What are you talking-" I was cut off by Thor throwing his hammer again, straight through all of the solid rock walls.

He told us he was making a 'shortcut' so we didn't have to take the long way through. It did get us through quicker, but on the down side, the entire structure collapsed in on itself. Oops.

Clint led the way back to the jet and we hopped in and took off right away. "Someone contact Camp," Clint called from the pilot cabin.

I grabbed the glass prism we borrowed from Camp and went to the small bathroom onboard. I fished a drachma out of my pocket and through it at the mirror. Instead of sinking into the mirror like I had hoped, it cracked the mirror, bounced right off, and nailed me in the nose. Guess that's not how you're supposed to do it.

There was a knock on the door, "You okay in there? I don't think you're doing it right" "Oh shut up Tony."

He chuckled and then left me alone. I remembered that you needed mist so I ran the hot water. I threw the drachma again and this time it did go through.

"Um...Oh Fleecy, do me a solid, show me Chiron at Camp Half-Blood, New York."

The rainbow shimmered and Chiron's weathered face appeared. I cleared my throat. "Chiron, we have the fleece and we're on our way back."

He startled and looked up at me. On his face was a mixture of a grimace and a grin. He cleared his throat. "You need to hurry. We don't have much time. I don't-we can't lose him. We can't lose Percy."

I nodded. "We're close. We should be there within the next twenty minutes."(wow, even I don't know how they managed to go that fast!)

The look Chiron gave me was not very reassuring at all. "That's the thing Sam. I don't think we have even that long. The whole Camp is on edge. And I fear that my father was never one to do a good deed. Time is one tool we do not have."

He swiped through the message and I was alone in the bathroom again. Whoa that sounded wrong. Anyway, moving on.

I emerged from the bathroom and made my way to the cockpit. Tony looked at me with concern. "You okay their Sam? Little gassy? You were in there for awhile."

"Really? You know full well what I was doing in there," I rebuked.

Tony shared a look with Clint. "Don't we all?" He asked with a wink. Clint smirked.

"You guys are impossible! I was talking to CHIRON. The same guy who is at Camp with a certain son of Poseidon who is dying at the moment! You guys need to fly this thing faster. He doesn't think Percy can wait even twenty minutes."

All humor was gone from Tony's face. "Then go faster."

Will's POV

We ate lunch in silence. No one made a sound. Even new campers knew something was wrong. You could feel the fear rolling off us in waves. It was miserable to say the least.

It's really sunny and warm outside today. The wind is just right. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. The smell of strawberries wafted into the dining pavilion. It should've been beautiful. But instead it was cold and unforgiving. Sinister.

Nico sat beside me looking down at his plate. He didn't eat anything, just played with his food. Normally I would get after him, but I wasn't eating anything either. No one was. No one could. Everyone just sat glumly and silent. Silent while Perseus Jackson, everyone's hero, was in pain and dying in the Big House.

I searched the sky, straining for sight of a certain jet. The sky was frustratingly empty. I slapped the table, making nearly everyone jump. "Damn it! Hurry!" I screamed at the sky.

Annabeth's POV

I squeezed Percy's hand. I couldn't seem to find any words that would fit the situation. His frightened eyes searched mine frantically. His breathing hitched and his eyes shut tight.

"Annabeth," he whispered. And that's when I knew. He was really going to die. The 'world's mightiest heroes' weren't going to make it in time.

Just a little while ago I was begging him to stay, but I know now that I need to put his feelings first. I need to reassure him. He needs to know that it'll be okay.

"Shh," I whispered, running my fingers through his hair. I didn't even bother to stem the flow of tears streaming down my face. Let them fall, said a voice in my head, tears aren't a sign of weakness, they are a sign of strength.

"It's okay, Percy," I managed through a sob," it's okay. I love you so much. It's okay to let go."

His eyes opened again, but they were cloudy and far away. He managed a nod and smiled weakly, a few of his own tears leaking from his eyes. Then the smile was gone. He blinked the clouds from his eyes.

"I love you wise girl," He croaked.

"I love you too, Seaweed Brain."

He was really struggling to breathe now. He lifted his head weakly and pressed his lips to mine. One last time. I kissed him back, crying. His lips were dry and cracked and I tasted salt, either from his lips or my tears, I couldn't tell.

I felt his eyelashes brush my cheek as his eyes closed for the last time. I pulled away and laid his head gently on the pillow. I brushed my hand across his brow and a sob broke through me. And they didn't stop.

Not my Seaweed Brain. Not my Percy. Gone.

Nico's POV

I jumped about two feet when Will slapped his hand on the table. I halfheartedly scanned the sky with Will, searching for a jet I knew was still about ten minutes out.

I turned back to the food I've been playing with. I stabbed a piece of broccoli and brought it to my face to examine it. Who eats broccoli? Disgusting.

Silence settled again and things seemed eerily quiet. I heard shears. Then something snapped. Something deep in my soul snapped in half and all the color seemed to drain from the valley. I dropped my fork.

This time it was Leo's turn to jump two feet. "Nico, what is it?" He asked. Will was looking at me in concern. Tears sprang to my eyes but I didn't bother with them.

I put my head in my hands and let out a sob. That caught everyone's attention. "Nico?" Chiron asked. "Oh gods," Will muttered, apparently the first one to realize what it was.

"It happened," I moaned. "Oh gods, it happened. Oh gods oh gods oh gods."

By this point Jason had crawled over the table and was now shaking me. "Nico! What happened?"

I slowly lifted my face and met his eyes with mine. "He's dead," I murmured, "Percy's dead."

Tony's POV

"Yes!" I yelled with a fist pump. Camp was in sight. Strawberry fields glittered in the sun. Clouds began to rumbled in and the water was choppy with waves. "Hmm," Thor said, "it was nice weather just a minute ago."

I shrugged it off. We made it! Clint landed the jet in near the dining pavilion and lowered the doors. The campers didn't swarm us like I was expecting. Instead they glared at us. Da fuq?

I stepped out with the fleece in hand. Chiron just looked away like he was in pain looking at it. It got suddenly dark and I quick glance confirmed that the clouds had blotted out the sun. The waves were getting higher and the wind picked up. Not a good sign in a world of gods.

I glanced at Thor but he just shrugged. Okay, so not him causing the freak storm.

"We've got the Fleece. Where's Percy." I asked. Some random camper pointed in the direction of the Big House. I started off in that direction when a voice interrupted me.

"You're late," Nico spoke coldly. "What?" Natasha asked, slightly puzzled. I noticed tears in his eyes. Nico's eyes. Looking around, a lot of the campers were clearly upset. Okay, something's definitely wrong here.

"He said you're late," Jason growled. I just kind of stared blankly, not quite knowing what to expect.

Thalia stormed up and slapped me right across the face. I yelped in surprise and brought my hand up to my face gingerly. My face stung. Damn she's strong!

"My cousin is dead because you weren't fast enough. But good job. You got the fleece and had fun on your quest." She bowed sarcastically, her face as hard as stone. And then her shell cracked.

She wheezed and started sobbing. Jason wrapped her in a hug. I was still so confused. Percy was dead? After all we went through to get the Fleece and it still wasn't enough?

"How long?" I choked out. "About ten minutes," Nico grumbled. I locked eyes with Bruce and I knew he was thinking the same thing. I looked back down at the fleece, my mind whirring with possibilities.

"The cradle, Banner. I need it now."

"Thor! The cradle! In my office!" Bruce yelled. Thor took off in the direction of the tower.

Nico narrowed his eyes. "What are you doing?"

"I don't even know. But I hope it works."

Hi demigods! That was an emotional chapter. I feel like I did a crappy job but hey, I was listening to sad music while I was writing it, so I guess we'll see. Anyway, I think there will probably be one more chapter or something like that and then the the second installment will be over. I'm thinking about writing a third book, but it won't be updated as often.

I'm just not getting enough reads and I'll probably just update whenever I feel like it, but there are some other stories I'm hoping to write and they will probably take up most of my attention.

Thanks for the 200 reads and I really did enjoy writing this story. I hope you enjoyed it and have a great day. Remember to vote and comment. I love you demigods so much:)
