01.) I Couldn't Save You

-----

Gwen Stacy always said death and curses liked to follow her. With the death of her best friend, Peter Parker, Harry becoming the lizard, her father getting jailed, and bonding with a symbiote goo, Gwen liked to say she was right in her previous statement.  Which is why Gwen freaked out when she came to see another version of Peter Parker squatting in front of her with a concerned expression on his face.

"Gah!" She scooted back and slapped away his hand. "Great," she murmured once she was a few feet away from him. "Another universe with another Parker. Though, this place doesn't seem like 616." The billboard for Roger's the Musical confirmed her suspicions.

"Umm, you know where we are?" Peter tilted his head, looking even more confused. "Who even are you?" He had so many questions, but he didn't want to overwhelm Gwen.

"I don't know!" Gwen snapped, getting to her feet and clutching her head. "OH, ow ow ow ow." She sucked in a sharp breath. "Sorry about that, who are you?"

"Spider-Man, who are you?" Peter stood up, pulling his mask off. "Well, Peter Parker, but I am the hero, Spider-Man." He smiled at Gwen and extended his hand to shake hers. Gwen slowly reached out and shook his hand. "Sorry I scared you."

"It's fine," Gwen sighed. "I'm Ghost Spider, and I don't know where we are." She took off her mask to breathe. "I'm Gwen Stacy from Earth-65. What Earth are you fro-Peter?" Her body tensed as Peter stared at her, his eyes filling with tears. "Are you okay?"

"You died. I saw you die," Peter whispered, his voice catching in his throat. "I saw you die!" His breathing sped up and he stumbled back. "I saw you die. I KNOW you died. I killed you..."

"Oh, Peter," Gwen sighed, reaching to grab his hand. "I am not your Gwen Stacy, but I am still Gwen Stacy. I couldn't save my Peter either." She placed his hand over her heart. "Feel it? I'm still breathing and my heart is beating."

"I'm sorry." Peter sobbed, hugging her close. "I am so, so sorry."

"I know, Peter. I know." Gwen hugged him back, rubbing his back. "We both lost each other. Maybe this time we can keep each other alive, yeah?" She looked up at him with a smile. "Come on, Peter. Let's figure out where exactly we are."

Peter choked out a laugh. "You always were the one to get things done." He wiped away the stray tears and put on his mask. "Let's get going." He shot his webshooters and swung into the night.

Gwen laughed, shoved her mask on, and swung after Peter. "Not fair, Parker!" She chased after Peter, losing him in the long stretch of alleys. "Peter?" Her Spider-sense went off when she saw a gold ringed portal open and Pete step through. "PETER!" She had just got another Peter back. She was not losing another one. He turned around and before Gwen could reach him, the portal closed. "F*CK!" Gwen screamed, punching the brick wall next to her.

"You know, you shouldn't swear, Gwennie." Gwen spun around ready for a fight. "It's unbecoming of a lady." Gwen bared her teeth and growled at the man standing before her.

"Murderdock," Gwen growled, getting into a defensive stance and her suit started to turn a deep black.

"I never realized how much I liked that nickname until today," the Matt Murdock of Earth-65 mused, a smirk tugging at his lips. He raised on hand. "Relax, Gwen. I didn't come to fight you. In fact, I came to ask you for..." he paused, seemingly gathering the right words to say. "To ask you for your help." He shuddered. "Shocking, I know."

"How did you get here?" Gwen gritted her teeth.

"I don't entirely know, and I don't have an answer to your question." Matt brushed off his white suit. "Now, I suggest you help me before this suit turns red." He flipped his cane and caught it, slowly pulling out the katana that was hidden inside the cane.

Gwen lowered her fists ever so slightly. "Why do you need my help? Let time I helped you, you tried to kill me and we both were arrested." She inched back, her back hitting the jagged brick wall where she had just punched. Broken pieces of the brick dug into her back.

"Because I do not intend to kill anyone. At least, not yet." His voice grew low. "Prison does change a person, Miss Stacy. You of all people should know that." His grip on his cane tightened, his knuckles going white. "I am asking for help against my better judgment. Know  this, if you help me, I won't go after your friends. I won't go after Miles, and I won't go after Peter."

I just met him, but I refuse to lose another Peter. Peter was the one who was by my side, and because of me, he died. I won't let another Peter die because of me. Gwen took a deep breath. "Fine. I will help you," she said through gritted teeth. She stepped forward and grabbed the front of his suit. "Double cross me, and I will forget I am a hero."

"Awe, you actually sounded threatening." Matt leaned forward to whisper into her ear. "But we both know you won't kill me." He pushed her back and smoothed out his suit. "Now that our partnership is renewed, let us get on with getting back to our home dimension." He eyed her spider necklace. "Does that work?"

"Huh?" Gwen looked down at the necklace. "How did-nevermind. I haven't tried it yet." She picked up the necklace and poked her finger. Nothing happened.

"Well?" Matt pressed, raising an eyebrow.

"It's not working. Why isn't it working?" Gwen questioned, trying again, hissing in pain.

"Give it a rest, Gwen." Matt sighed, lifting his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose. "We don't have time for that right now." He tenses and whipped out his sword. "We aren't alone."

Gwen's spider-sense went off once again. "Yeah, figured that out." The two were back to back. Matt listened to the sounds of the city, and Gwen tried to look around to see who was there. "Yeah, stalking isn't the nicest thing to do, so why don't you come on out?" she called out. Matt shook his head and sighed.

"Who are you?" Daredevil dropped down from the shadows.
