After Immortals

When Adam first pitched Immortals, it immediately became one of the bands top five songs they'd ever written, and they were getting up into the 200's.

But then came Stevens horrible nightmare.

He was standing at a graveyard in their backyard where the stream cuts off half of the woods and part of the flower field. Seven tombstones, seven lovers murdered by time. He'd been to every funeral, every wake, every burial and heard every speech. He spoke at their funerals and sat with their families, comforting when he needed to be comforted because one of these things was not like the others and everyone knew it.

His friends had died of old age.

And he was still 27.

It was feasible. He was chronologically growing, but his gem (once he reached an optimal age and status) could just stop. He could be immortal without even trying and have to watch as all his friends died and left him behind. He'd have to watch his Connie leave him behind, and it destroyed him.

He was only able to realize seconds before waking up that he was being watched in his dream.

Steven shot up sobbing, glowing, screaming; Connie was up a split second later trying to console him but it was no use. His knees went up, a sign to Connie that it was a deeply emotional thing and his walls were built high. He was going to push without trying, and she was going to have to scale the wall he was building.

She was always, always ready to comfort her husband in any way possible just like he'd done for her. But this time, she wasn't alone.

"Guys, funs over," Connie joked to a few raised eyebrows. "Sorry, bad joke. I'm coping."

Adam got up to pull her into a hug and she sighed as tears filled her eyes. Adam's hugs had a habit of making people cry when they needed to. They were firm, full with nothing held back, and warm despite his natural cool state. "I think he accidentally dream walked, I was going to talk to you when you came down." He pulled away and wiped some of her tears. "Try to relax a bit, Daddy's turn."

Sure steps left them all worried anyways.

"Why is he so upset?" Jasmin asked as she rubbed Connie's shoulder.

"He had a nightmare, and based on his reaction I'd guess it has something to do with gem stuff. He has nightmares sometimes where he's left behind by us." She stared at her hands, soft because Steven was always kissing them. Didn't he know? It felt impossible to believe he didn't, but maybe he didn't know.

"Like immortal?" Hazel pressed, grabbing her hand. "Please talk to me. I'm so worried there's something here I'm missing and Jacob's over here about to squeeze my hand clean off."

Connie took a deep breath. "Steven's scared we're going to leave him behind when we die and he'll be stuck as an–,"

"Immortal," Jacob finished, eyes skimming the floor. He seemed thoughtful, an intense expression on his face as he glanced at Jasmin and Alex and then the rest of them.

Then he cracked a smile. "Well ain't that crackers, I've gone and surprised myself."

Alex nodded. "It's time we at least bring it up more seriously."

Steven was still sobbing and curled in on himself. Adam had to squint a little due to the intensity of the glow, but he sat next to Steven and hummed a few lines of the song.

The crying stopped short and he sat up. "I-it was you?"

"Steven... I saw your entire nightmare," Adam started, oddly enough feeling a little guilty. "I didn't mean to, I think we've spent a lot of time fused recently which I'm happy with so don't think I'm mad." He swallowed, taking Stevens hand and getting down on a knee in front of him. "Steven, for you... I would stay."

His eyes widened and he squeezed his hand back weakly. "Don't say that. I'd never ask you to do that. That's... forever and ever. Ask Lars. It's not what it's cracked up to be."

"Death has to take something in exchange, I've learned. I would stay, and pay whatever toll I had to," Adam promised, kissing his hand lovingly. "You're mine too, and I couldn't leave mine alone."

Stevens eyes welled with tears all over again that were so hot he had to blink them out. "But–,"

"I'm not giving you a choice, Steven." He moved up to give Steven the best kiss they'd ever had to date: a slow, sweet kiss featuring Adam nuzzling his nose like he did to Anna and his thumb stroking at Steven's cheek. "I'd wake back up pink possibly, but I'd live for you if you couldn't die. Besides, refusing death for love to become an immortal pink zombie is the most goth thing ever. I'd be a king. A god even."

They chuckled, Steven still feeling a bit tumultuous but stable enough to go downstairs after a long while of cuddling.

Adam squeezed his hand before they entered. "And who knows, you might be surprised."

Steven paused. "Why surprised?"

"I have dedicated my entire life to getting to know you people as best I can," Adam chuckled. "Just come and see."

The first thing that happened when Steven entered was a pillow thrown at his head to take him off balance and then Connie tackling him. "Steven, I'm your wife! If you don't bring me back I'll haunt you and your new bitches forever. You'll never be rid of me."

"Gotta say, I'm almost offended you've forgotten the most interesting part about us," Hazel added, gathering his other hand into his. "Our blood is your magic."

Steven panicked. "So I've involuntarily trapped you with me... again."

"Oh shut up!" Alex cried. "You didn't trap us to be your friend or want to live together or be in love with you! We chose this life, with you, with each other, because this is heaven and everything else would never be as fullfilling." Steven's eyes widened. It may have been the kindest, most romantic thing Alex had ever said. But then he surprised him again. "Your magic is my blood, our blood, and now we have the choice to stay whenever the time comes. And newsflash babe: I genuinely don't like other people. I've tried to make friends, but I don't like anyone else and I don't think I'm going to."

"I would never let you be alone," Anna murmured, big blue eyes directed at him just to stop his heart. "And I don't wanna be alone underground... it sounds so scary."

"Think about this, please," Steven begged. "My feelings don't get to dictate the rest of your existence. It's not fair. Humans die and I have to be okay with not being... you know."

"Hey," Jacob soothed, catching him in a kiss. "You're not really listening... you don't have a choice. I'll find a way. I'd stay, I'd stay, I will stay." He moved to catch Steven's eye and smiled a bit. "Are you listening to me?"

Steven broke down again and buried his head in his hands. "You can't make that choice just because you love me! You'll be stuck with me forever!"

"Oh no," Jasmin lamented sarcastically. "Stuck forever with a big dick teddy bear who is ridiculously talented and loves us with his entire being. Sounds like my personal hell."

Connie cooed at him gently and wiped away his tears, deciding to switch tactics. "Shh... you don't have to think about that now. You just sit here and let us love on you."

"Again? I'm always breaking down or losing my shit!" He cried brokenly. "I hate doing this over and over."

His wife kissed his forehead and giggled. "I don't. Remember You Right? I love taking care of you like how you take care of me. We love you, Steven. Every single bright sunny smile and moment like this, okay?"

He sniffled and collapsed in her arms. "Okay."
