Chapter 13| Ruby
When I open my eyes, I'm met with two concerned faces belonging to Karen and Ike. Karen's eyes are red rimmed, her cheeks tear stained. Ike's eyes are filled to the brim with worry, and are glassy. My heart hurts when I see my impact on them, and it makes me want to hide.
I curse my stupidity. Now they know about the cuts. I wasn't finished. I needed way more cuts. No one will ever believe me with just a few little scars. These aren't enough evidence to persuade the police.
I spy Firkle in the doorway. A silhouette of black that contrasts heavily to the white decor of the nurse's office. He's looking at me, his gaze comforting yet intimidating. If that's even possible.
"Why?" Ike is the one to break the silence that hung in the air.
"Why what?" I ask, my voice strangely hoarse.
"Why did you cut, Ruby?" His eyes boar into mine, so fierce that I have to look away.
Do I tell him the truth? Or do I lie?
What are the consequences anyway? It's not like everything is going to go well if I don't tell him. They will keep pushing, keep wanting answers. And Karen.. She doesn't deserve to have this burden in her life. She has enough to worry about without adding my life to the list.
Lie?
Truth?
How am I supposed to decide?
While being lost in my thoughts, I didn't realise Karen had started to sniffle and cry. Her small sniffs, her heart breaking cries.
I must tell them the truth.
I sit up in bed, patting the spots in front of me. Karen sits on my left, Ike on my right. I grab both of their hands, one of Karen's and one of Ike's. My heart aches under their pitiful and concerned gazes.
I take a deep breath, and tell them everything.
About walking in on Craig getting hit by my dad, someone I'm supposed to look up too. Accidentally cutting myself on the glass, then about my idea. Finally, about what happened with Firkle. As I retell the Firkle situation, I lock eyes with the tall goth. He sighs, pushes his hair over his left eye, and walks out.
I notice Ike turns to gaze upon Firkle as he leaves. When he's no longer visible Ike turns to face me again.
"We have to go to the police." He states, clutching my hand as if his life depended on it.
Karen leans forward without saying anything, and wraps her arms around my neck. She buries her face into my shoulder, and I feel myself turn pink at the gesture.
I rarely revive hugs. It's.. Nice. Comforting. Safe almost.
"You're so brave Ruby. I would do the same for Kenny." She whispers into my ear, and I flush even more.
"You're embarrassing me Karen." I say, and she pulls away, giggling.
"Good. Now, let's go to the police station." Karen says, standing up off of the bed.
"That was the plan." I say, standing up. Ike joins us.
"We can't just leave school." Ike says, bitting his bottom lip.
"Why not?" Karen asks. "This is more important than an education Ike."
"Exactly." I agree with Karen, and she clings to my arm.
"That's not what I meant. I mean we physically can't. We've never been truant before. We have no idea how to get out undetected." Ike says, crossing his arms.
I smirk.
"How lucky is it that your boyfriend is a master at ditching school?" I tell him, and Karen nods.
Ike flushes, his eyes wide. "Ex! And I don't wish to ask him for help!"
"Too bad. We can catch him if we go now."
With a pouting Ike, we leave the nurse's office. Firkle is walking alone, his hands in his pockets and head down.
Ike just stares at him. I nudge him.
"Call him over."
Ike blinks, closing his eyes in frustration. He then calls out for his ex. "Firkle!"
The goth stops walking, and slowly turns around. He stares at Ike, and Ike stares back. None of them move.
"We do need to go." Karen reminds Ike, and Ike suddenly moves again. As if he didn't notice he was still.
"Firkle, I need you to assist us!" Ike calls. "Come here.." He hesitates before saying this word. "Please!"
Grudgingly, Firkle walks over. He stops dead in front of his ex, staring down at Ike as Ike looks up at him.
"Yes?" He asks.
Ike looks at us, then at Firkle. He shifts awkwardly. I look at him confused.
"Why is he so awkward?" I ask Karen.
"He doesn't like to talk to Firkle when others are watching." Karen says, shrugging. "It's very strange."
I roll my eyes, and watch painfully as a blushing Ike manages to get Firkle to help us get out undetected.
It actually isn't that difficult of a task to accomplish. We go out the back way, were the Goth Kids would usually smoke, and just leave from the front. You'd expect it to be harder, as PC Principle is always trying to have us keep up our attendance.
We walk to the police station in silence. Karen holding my arm, and Ike walking with his hands in his pockets, seemingly lost in his thoughts.
I try to think of what to say to the officer, but I have no idea.
I want to see the chief of course, he's the main man. If he believes me others will have too. But what will I say to him? I had played the scene out in my head many times, and it was simple.
Flash him my cuts, and say I did it because my dad is an abusive asshole.
But that was in my mind. I don't think calling my dad an abusive asshole is going to convince the police that he actually is an abusive asshole. The fact that my dad is so respected around town doesn't help either. No one expects Thomas Tucker to be a violent psychopath. It's why I haven't gone to the police sooner.
I have no more time to think as the station comes into view. The building towers over us, slightly intimidating. We walk through the doors, and into the hectic station.
Officers after officers are rushing around. Holding files, loading up guns or doing both. They all wear the same blue uniform, with the same shinny, gold badge. The only officer not moving is the one day up on a desk. He looks down casually at his newspaper, drinking coffee out of a Tweak Bros. foam cup.
"Excuse me sir!" Ike shouts up to him, waving his hand in an attempt to get his attention. It works, as he places down the paper and peers at the three of us.
"Shouldn't you kids be in school?" We ignore his question, and move straight to the point.
"We need to see the chief sir." Karen says.
"Do you really? Too bad he's too busy for a bunch of kids." The man shakes his head, picking up his paper. "Get back to school and get an education."
"Hey! This is a matter of someone's life! They could be seriously injured if you don't let us in to see the chief!" Ike shouts, stamping his foot.
"Well I better let you through then, especially since you have no proof that someone is in danger." He says, dropping his paper once more.
"You're terrible!" Karen says.
"I'm not terrible, I'm a police officer. The chief really is busy." Ike stares up at him, his brown eyes gleaming.
"Please sir. You don't understand how scary this situation could get. We need to see him." The officer's cold manner seems to melt under Ike's gaze. He sighs, and let's us through.
"What the hell was that?" I ask after the officer leaves, shocked.
"Kyle isn't the only one who knows how to get his own way." Ike says simply, shrugging.
"I don't understand how your eyes can effect someone though. They are poop brown." Karen says, and I laugh as we knock on the door of the chief.
What once was a tense atmosphere seems to have disappeared. Ike glares at Karen, and says her eyes are brown too.
"Hazel actually." She points out.
"Because the difference between brown and hazel is such a great one."
"Hey guys." I say. They both look at me and speak simultaneously.
"What?"
"Shut your mouths."
The door to the office opens after my words.
"How may I help you three?" The chief asks, "do I need to attack any minorities for you?" He then eyes Ike. "No offence."
"Non taken, I guess." Ike mumbles.
"It's not a minority I need you to attack sir, it's my dad."
