Ghost of you (FF) (HP)
A/N:I've gotten to a point where random story ideas will pop into my head. Rather than let them fizz out I'm going to write them down here, even if that means I never actually use these. Some of these may end up being part of stories later, stories that I have yet to start on but have parts planned out already. With this in mind please read these with caution.
For reference, Regulus looks similar to the picture provided (you could always imagine him different, I personally see Timothéé Chalamet as Regulus).
Trigger Warning: Angst, mentions of abuse, and death
Timeline: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (references Marauders era)
Harry gazed out at the horizon, occasionally glancing at the woman who stood beside him. "What was he like, " He asked, breaking the silence "Regulus,"
The woman beside him sighed. She seemed to revert back twenty years in a matter of seconds. "Regulus..." She said as her voice cracked. It was obvious from the way she spoke his name that she hadn't said it in a long time but she said it lovingly unlike Sirius had.
"He was...." She said as she struggled to come up with the right words. "Stubborn, but he was also kind. So much kinder than most people knew. He used to always find a way to cheer me up when Sirius wasn't around." She chuckled slightly as the memories came back to her, memories she had tried for years to push away because they hurt too much.
"I don't know how to tell you this but your brother died trying to destroy something. Something that could help us defeat You-Know-Who," Harry said kindly.
The woman next to him smiled sadly. "I know Harry," She said softly. "I never knew all the details but he left me a note briefly explaining what he planned to do. It was vague but...it was clear when he never came back that he had died trying to destroy whatever it was that he had found."
"Can you tell me what you remember about that day?" Harry asked cautiously. "Anything at all."
Carina sighed and took a deep and shakey breathe. "It was 3 days after our 18th birthday." She said softly.
"Our?" Harry asked confused.
"Yes, our birthday." She repeated. "Don't suppose Sirus told you that did he?" She added bitterly.
"No," Harry said. "He didn't. He barely spoke of either of you."
Carina slowly nodded her head as she blinked back tears. "It was August," She said as her voice shook. "The leaves had started to turn orange and red outside. Reggie and I used to admire them with Sirus but...he hadn't been home in almost 4 years. Mother had kicked him out but we still tried to keep contact with him secretly." Her hands shook as she tightly gripped onto the rail of the Astronomy Tower. She hadn't wanted to come back to Hogwarts but she had known Harry needed her.
"It was 3 days after our 18th birthday. He was acting strange, scared. I didn't understand it. I could hear him crying in his room so I went to comfort him."
"Hey Reggie," Carina said softly as she knocked on her brother's door. "I don't mean to disturb you but I heard you crying. Are you alright?"
The door had swung open as soon as she had knocked on it. Even if she hadn't seen him, she would have felt his pain, his fear, his sorrow. They were connected in that way, knowing what the other was feeling, but seeing those emotions written so clearly on his face hurt.
"Reggie, what's wrong?" She asked, freezing at the sight of her brother in so much pain.
Her brother looked up at the sound of her voice with tears streaming down his face. His normally well-kept hair was disheveled and covering his face. She knew instantly upon seeing his appearance something was wrong, majorly wrong. He hated to appear untidy, a trait he had picked up from their mother, so seeing him without any apparent care to his appearance or the state of his room was terrifying.
She hurried over to her brother and brushed his hair out of his face. Her lip trembled as she saw the distant look in his eyes, and the way he quickly glanced around the room as if taking it all in for the last time.
"Reggie, what's wrong?" She practically screamed. "Please say something, you're scaring me."
He gently cupped his hands around her face, lifting it up so she was properly looking him in the eyes. "I had to go somewhere," He said as his lip trembled. "Promise me you'll take care of Mother."
She took a step back, surprised by her brother's plea. "What? Where do you have to go? Why are you insisting that I look after Mother?" Carina asked.
"Please," He begged as tears continued to spill down his face.
"No! I will not promise anything until you tell me where you are going!" She shouted angrily.
"I can't. It's too dangerous. The less people who know the better." He said.
"Regulus Arcturus Black, I swear to Merlin if you get your hurt or killed I am going to be so pissed at you." Carina said as her lips trembled.
"Nothing's going to happen to me," Regulus said, chuckling lightly.
"Promise." She said.
"I Promise," He lied.
Even almost 20 years later, the memory hurt like a reopened scar. Being a member of the Noble House of Black, she knew all about scars. Mostly from having to clean up Sirus but there had been a few times that she had earned some herself.
Harry stood and watched as Carina broke down next to him. He knew he couldn't begin to understand her pain. True, he had lost loved ones but he never had any siblings so he couldn't understand what it was like to watch someone you knew almost as well as yourself leave you behind.
"Look, if it hurts too much you don't have to tell me anymore," Harry said soothingly. It felt odd to comfort an adult but he knew that right now she was 18 again, the hurt from her twin brothers' death as fresh and new as when she had first learned of it.
"No, no," Carina said reassuringly. "I want to do this, for both of my brothers."
"Do you know where he would have put it?" Harry asked. He was careful not to mention the locket. He wasn't sure if she had figured out that the locket he had acquired was the reason he knew what Regulus had done, but he didn't want to risk making her further upset by mentioning it.
"He would have given it to Kreacher. He loved that house-elf." She said.
Harry smiled. Even though the Horcrux that he had received was fake it had allowed him to learn more about his Godfather's family so it wasn't a total loss. "Thank you," He said as he turned to leave. Halfway down the Astronomy tower he paused as an idea entered his head.
"Hey Carina!" He yelled as he ran back up the stairs. By the time he reached the top he was winded. She stood in the same spot as before with her back toward him. "Carina, would you like to help us destroy these..." He paused, uncertain of how to finish the sentence.
Carina turned around, her eyes were glossy with tears. It was obvious that she had been crying. "Horcruxes." She said. "You're searching for Horcruxes aren't you?"
Harry wasn't sure how to respond. Nothing he had ever said indicted that he was talking about Horcruxes. He was taken even more off guard when she began to laugh.
"He used to brag about them at the meetings." She said as she laughed and cried at the same time. "He used to brag like it was some kind of major achievement. He never said where he kept them or how many there were. We all thought he was making it up but...Regulus must have found one, a real one."
"So...is that a yes?" Harry questioned, unsure how to handle the information he had just been given.
"The Dark Lord took everything from me, of course my answer is yes,"
