Final Goodbye (FF) (HP)

Warning!
This short story has spoilers for a future chapter of my current HP fanfic Ebony and Ivory. If you wish to avoid spoilers please do not read this chapter.

A/N: There are some parts where they speak in French. I'm not fluent in French so I used Google translate to roughly translate from English to French back to English. If you are fluent in both French and English feel free to let me know how well I did and point out any mistakes. Also this story is going to end up being angsty af if you couldn't tell by the title. Please prepare yourself and don't hate me lol. I feel like I should also point out that Regulus's birth and death date are never stated so I have chosen August 21st for his birthday and August 24th for his death date (Since Carina's his twin the same birthday applies for her).

Carina walked down the dark hallway, trying to avoid making the floorboards creak. It was 8 in the morning, which was earlier than most of her family members would be up. Had it been 4 years earlier, she would have most likely been greeted with the sight of Sirus inside his room with the light on. As it was now, his room was cold and dark. It served as a constant reminder that he was gone, that he had left both of them here to suffer alone with only the other to rely on.

Carina continued down the hallway and pushed open the door to Sirius' old room. She wasn't sure what she would find since her older brother had never allowed her to step foot inside unsupervised. The room was a mess, littered with odd muggle devices and the weird still photos. The thing that caught her attention though was the picture of girls in bikini that he had hanging on the wall.

She had to hold back a chuckle. There was no way that her brother had found that attractive in anyway but she knew that he also had been very adamant about denying his sexuality, a fact that could be blamed on their parents. It wasn't enough for them to be crazy over blood purity and proper behavior, they also had to be homophobic on top of it. She angirly ripped it off the wall and tossed it onto the floor.

Around her layed reminders of everything her brother had been and every reason why he was gone. It filled her with unending rage and disgust. Not at him, not fully anyway. No matter what she could never hate her brother, but sometimes it was hard not to get angry at him for meaving her behind. No, not just her, but Reggie too.

"You shouldn't waste your anger on him. He's not worth it." A familiar voice said from the hallway.

"You're up early brother," Carina said as she gazed at her twin who stood outside the doorway.

"Come on," Regulus said as he held out his hand. "We can go for a stroll,"

Carina carefully stepped her way out the mess that was her disowned brothers' room and took Regulus' hand to pull her out of the room. "Where are we going?" She asked. "We aren't allowed outside."

Her brother smirked. "What mother doesn't know won't kill her." He said as he held out his hand again.

Carina gingerly grabbed it, knowing full well what he was going to do. As the world spun around her, she couldn't help by smile with glee. It had been weeks since she had last left the house, and even though she hated apparating, it filled her with joy to be free from that dark prison they called a home.

They arrived on a beautiful hill overlooking a lake. At the bottom of the hill was a sidewalk that the muggles used to move through the park. They used to come to this park in secret with Sirius when they were younger but that had stopped once their parents had discovered what they were doing and lashed out at them. It was impossible in those days to hang out with Sirus while also pleasing their parents. They had to follow strict rules after Sirus was sorted into Griffindor, one of which was not to own or be associated with muggles products. This also made their secret trips to the park nearly impossible, not that they had wanted to go anymore, the park was Sirus' place and they no longer wished to be associated with anything that he liked or wanted.

They used to be very good about following the rules. A fact that they laughed at now. They had been scared into obedience, mostly through watching their older brother get punished for simple things that muggles took for granted. It wasn't until they made friends at Hogwarts that they realized that it wasn't necessary to follow all of the rules. Did they follow the rules? No. Did they pretend to? Yes. It was easier than full flegded rebellion. A fact that they had learned from Sirius. Perhaps it would have been better if they had openly rebelled, but neither twin was confident that they'd have a place to go. Sirius had been lucky, he had friends to help him but they had no body. So instead, they waited for a time and place to break free.

"So...what do you want to talk about little brother?" Carina asked.

"Little brother!?!?" Regulus cried out, pretending to be insulted. "Tu sais, j'ai 12 minutes de plus que toi." He mocked. (Pietro is that you lmao)

Carina stuck out her tongue. "Ce n'était pas 12 minutes, idiot!"

They both preceded to glare at each other before busting out laughing. It was simply impossible for them to stay mad at one another. They had always been close and nothing could ever change that, not even the war that loomed over their heads and threatened to change their lives forever.

"Hey Carina," Regulus said. "Can you promise me something,"

"Of course brother," She said. "What is it?"

"Whatever happens, don't forget me," He said.

His statement took her off-guard. "What are you talking about?" Carina asked.

"You know, with this war on you never know what's going to happen." Regulus said casually. "I wouldn't put it past Sirus to forget about me if I died. But...I don't want to be forgotten."

"Are you sure you're feeling alright brother?" Carina teased. "You haven't caught a cold?"

"A cold? No! I haven't caught a cold!" Regulus exclaimed, once again pretending to be offended by his sister's words. "It's just..at times like these one really begins to think their life and...I haven't really lived a life worth remembering. I mean, who would remember me when there's cool people like James or Lucius around?"

"Brother, you've done enough." Carina said soothingly. "Besides, even if everyone else were to forget you, you still have me, Sirius and your little raven." Carina smirked as she mentioned the last person. She knew that her brother's face would go red and sure enough it was. Red as Lily Evans' hair.

"W-well." Her brother stuttered, trying to come up with a good come-back. "Y-You have your little rat!"

Carina's face flushed pink. "He's not my little rat!" She spat.

"And she's not my raven!" Regulus retorted.

"Let's just go home! I don't have time to argue with you!" Carina snarled.

"Fine!" Regulus sneered. He quickly grabbed her hand and they apparated back to their house.

(I felt like this also could fit. Music boxs make almost everything sadder. Enjoy! )

Cold, dark, empty. That's how Carina felt on August 24th. She had never felt this alone before. There has always been some sort of sign to reassure her was not alone but this time there was none. She knew what it meant but she didn't believe it, she couldn't believe it. She didn't want it to be true, so she lied to herself and said that everything was fine.

But Denial can only get you so far, and in her case the thing that broke her out of that denial was the arrival of an owl with a letter. She immediately recognized the owl to be her brother's. Why it didn't just make the short flight to her room, she had no clue. Perhaps the poor thing wanted to stretch its wings, after all, it had been weeks since her brother had sent anyone letters. She quickly plucked the letter out of the owl's beak, her hands shaking uncontrollably. She knew what she was going to see when she opened the letter but...it didn't make it any easier.

She dropped the letter in her despair. She was alone. All alone. And for the first time in her life, she finally understood true sadness, true grief, true anger. Everything felt cold and empty, like her heart. Never again would she be able to hear her brother's voice, or see him smile, and it was tearing her apart. She was so numb and unaware of her surroundings that she didn't hear her mother coming up the stairs, nor did she hear her own heartbroken screams.

Together, both mother and daughter wept. They wept for a boy who died too soon, a boy who came to his senses too late and saw the only solution as death. Together they mourned the death of Regulus Arcturus Black, a hero who sacrificed everything for nothing.
