Chapter 4 - Tamsin
After school, I walked out of the building to meet Kai. I found him leaned over on his bike while talking to his friends in the parking lot. They stood around joking and laughing. I knew Kai's friends—Devon and Benny. Devon has a girlfriend. Her name is Nina. Hooked beneath Devon's brawny arms, she reached the tip of his nose. I think she looked to be around five feet. Her long black hair naturally curly—buoyant loops that are tight and springy. She looked like a model standing next to the three bad boys. Lucky for her, she's the only girl that they have accepted into their crew.
Benny saw me walking towards them first. He stopped talking mid-sentence, which stopped Kai from staring at him. Kai turned to look in my direction before pushing off the handles of his bike to sit up straight.
Suddenly, they all stopped talking. The four of them turned to look at me and I felt like jumping between the parked vehicles to hide myself. However, I gathered my courage and continued walking their way.
When I reached them, I lifted my hand and waved in the air in greeting.
"Hi."
"Tamsin, right?" Nina asked.
I nodded my head and smiled in her direction.
"My name is Nina. This here is Devon and Benny. They might look terrifying with their looks and height, but their bark is worse than their bite."
"What do you mean, baby girl? You aren't afraid of me." Devon smirked while looking down at her with coy eyes. Nina turned and slapped his arms.
"Stop it. You'll scare her away. You three already drive me crazy enough. Having another girl will be amazing. I'll have someone to talk to."
Kai coughed before reaching over to grab my wrist. He pulled me towards him and then placed my hand on his shoulder.
"Get on."
I didn't argue. I slipped one leg over the back. As soon as I sat behind him, Kai handed me his helmet. I put it on over my head and then wrapped my arms around his waist while he got the bike started. He nodded to his friends' goodbye before revving out of the parking lot.
"Where did you want to go first?" Kai shouted, turning his head slightly.
"Let's go to the nearest hobby store. There should be some supplies there."
Kai signaled and made a turn, heading in the direction of the nearest hobby store. On the way to the location, I couldn't help but observe how close we were to each other. I could feel the heat of his body through his grey hooded t-shirt. Even through the cotton material, I could feel how hard his abdomen was.
Did he work out? It felt like he did. I tightened my arms around his body, almost discreetly. It definitely feels like he works out.
Through my quiet observation, I didn't realize that we had already made it to the store. Kai pulled into the parking lot and parked. He turned off the engine. I moved to unbuckle the helmet before handing it to him. I moved first to get off.
We walked inside together. As I walked down the aisle looking through things, Kai walked behind me with his hand stuffed in his pockets. He said little, but followed in silence. We went up and down a few aisles. Slowly, we filled our cart with materials.
When we made it to the artificial flowers aisles, I looked with interest at the flower arrangement. I stopped to pick up a yellow sunflower before turning to him.
"Isn't it beautiful?" I asked.
He took one look at it before turning away and picking up a black rose. He tapped it on my forehead.
"This is more beautiful."
"Typical. The rose you chose matches you completely. If it was Dean, he would probably agree that the sunflower is beautiful." I stuffed the flower back into the arrangement. Kai also put away his flower before turning to me.
"I don't what you see in the guy. He's a total douche."
I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow. "I think he's pretty handsome."
"I'm handsome," Kai responded.
I pursed my lips while pretending to observe him. "You're not my type."
Kai's jaw ticked and he took one step toward me. I took one step back in surprise. He took another step and pressed me up against the bed of flower arrangements. With his free hand, he boxed me in with one arm. Slowly, he moved closer until his face was mere inches from me.
"What are you doing?" I whispered, not daring to move from my spot.
"Checking to see if you are wearing contact lenses because you aren't seeing properly."
I snorted before pushing him away from me. He chuckled and stuffed his hand back into his pocket. I quickly turned and grabbed the cart. Wheeling ahead of him, I fought to steady the beat of my heart. For some reason, it kicked into gear when he stood close to me. I could feel my face heating.
Seeing him up close, I could see that his pale green eyes have silvers of dark green and light green. It wave of green colors. He also had strong cheekbones and perfect lips. His nose was a little crooked, but I think it was from getting into a fight. There was a little scar above his left eyebrow.
He was right. He was hot.
I stopped at another aisle and picked up a few glass bottles to compare. Lifting one glass in my hand and the other in my hand. I tried to decide which one we should get. I felt something brush up against my cheek. Using my shoulder, I rubbed at my cheek while concentrating on the bottles.
I felt the tickle down my neck and my shoulders scrunched up. Then I felt it run across the back of my neck and then to my ear. I shook before turning around to look behind me. I caught Kai holding a feather in his hand. Glaring in his direction, I placed the two glass bottles in the cart before walking towards him. I made a move to grab the feather, but he moved out of my hand. He had a quick reaction.
"Stop messing around, Kai. We have to get the supplies."
"I'm not. I'm helping you."
"You're not helping me." I tried to grab it again. Kai tickled my face with the feather again. I jumped at him this time and end up knocking both of us over. Luckily, he wrapped his arms around my waist to steady both of us. I stopped myself from falling by putting my hands on his shoulders.
It would have been a perfect moment, but he slipped on his heels and we went tumbling onto the cold, hard floor. He grunted in pain from the landing. He cushioned my fall.
"I'm so sorry, Kai. Are you okay?"
I pushed off his chest to look him over. His face was red and scrunched up in pain. Kai gritted his teeth. My hand moved lower. I touched his chest and then slid it down to his abs. He placed his hand over mine to stop me from exploring.
"I'm fine," he said, breathless.
"Are you sure? I'm pretty heavy," I asked again.
He chuckled in pain. "Yeah, you are."
I punched his chest, and he grunted again. "Jesus, woman. I stopped your fall and you still beat me up."
"If you still have the time to joke around and tease me, then you aren't that badly injured."
I got off him and put one hand out for him to grab. Kai looked at my hand before slapping it away and getting up. With one hand on his back, he groaned out loud.
"I'm going to need to exchange insurance with you, Doll face."
I snorted and watched as one corner of his lips lifted back up again. Although he was joking, I knew he hit the floor pretty hard. I took hold of one of his elbow and looked him over.
"I'm sorry, Kai. I really am. I shouldn't have jumped at you. We should head back now. I think we have everything we need." I turned to look at the cart.
Kai said nothing, but nodded his head. He kept his hands on the cart and I kept my hands wrapped around his elbow. Together, we walked to the cash register and paid for our materials.
When we got to the bike, I stuffed everything I can into my backpack. Luckily, I didn't bring all my textbooks home tonight. It wouldn't have fitted everything.
As Kai got on the bike, I could see him wincing and again, I felt guilty. He drove me home first. When I got off, I turned around to look at him.
"Come inside. We have pain medication inside for your back."
"I'll be fine," he grumbled.
"Kai, get off your bike."
His pale green eyes lifted when he heard me demand him to get off. Shaking his head, I watched him shut off his engine.
"It's not even that bad."
"Still, I would feel better if you go home with something."
We walked inside together. I don't know why I bothered asking him. I think my conscience wouldn't let me live it down. Although falling was an accident, I still feel partially at fault. I fell on top of him. The least I could do was give him some medicine or something.
When we got inside, I walked Kai over to the living room and sat him down on the couch. I threw my backpack on the floor. It was pretty heavy with all the stuff and my shoulders were already starting to ache. As soon as the backpack was off my shoulders, I rubbed at the spot the straps were on.
"Did you want something to eat or drink?" I asked without looking behind me. I walked into the kitchen, but heard him decline my offer.
We were out shopping for a good hour in a half. Even if he wasn't hungry, I was hungry. I went to our corner medicine cabinet and grabbed some pain pills. Then opened the cabinet next to it, there I grabbed a cup and filled it up with water from our water dispenser attached to our fridge.
I sat the cup down briefly to open the freezer and grabbed an ice pack. I placed the ice pack beneath my arm and then grabbed the cup before walking back to him.
"Here." I opened my palm to reveal the pills. He grabbed the pills and popped them in his mouth before drinking the water. Kai placed the cup on the coffee table.
"Lay down on your stomach," I ordered.
"I'm fine, Doll face."
"Let's just ice it for a few minutes and if you want to leave, you can after you ice it."
"I don't remember you being this bossy," he grumbled before complying and lying on his stomach.
"When it comes to stubborn people, you have to be bossy to keep them in check." I opened the bottom of his shirt and placed the ice pack on his lower back.
Kai hissed, "Damn, that's cold."
"Stay still for a few minutes. I'll be back."
I walked back to the kitchen. Opening the pantry, I grabbed a large bag of kettle chips. I walked back to the living room and dropped onto the rug next to him.
"Want some?" I asked.
"No," Kai muttered.
I opened the bag and grabbed a chip before putting it in his mouth. Our eyes met and for one second, we waited to see who would give in. I raised my eyebrows a second later, and he opened his mouth after that.
"You're lucky I'm feeding you."
Kai grunted. I popped one chip into my mouth and chewed. We ate in silence. I fed him and then I fed myself. It went like that for several minutes. Seconds ticked by and before we knew it, we were almost halfway done with the chip bag. I glanced at my watch and saw that it was almost time my parents were coming home from work.
"How are you feeling?" I turned to look at him, but found that he was already looking at me. How long has he been staring?
"I told you I'm fine."
"A thank you would be nice."
Kai pushed himself off the couch to sit. He removed the ice pack next before putting it on the coffee table.
"I should get going."
"Okay. Should we meet tomorrow to start our project?"
He nodded his head.
"At your house?" I questioned.
"No. I'll meet you here."
"But my parents would be home." I stood up when he stood up. He walked to the front door and I followed.
"And?"
"And I never had any boys over. You are the first." Something in his eyes changed. Did his irises dilate slightly? That notion was pretty ridiculous.
"I still don't get why I can't come over—"
"My dad is very strict. He'll have us work in the dining room."
"Hm, I guess that wouldn't be ideal." Kai crossed his arms.
"No, it wouldn't," I agreed.
He seemed to be thinking and while he was thinking; I was thinking, why I can't go to his house?
"I'll talk to Everett and see if we could hang at his house tomorrow night," Kai said.
"Would he be okay with it?" I frowned.
Kai turned to the front and opened it. He stepped outside onto the porch before turning to face me.
"He'll be okay with it. I always hang at his house. His parents are pretty good about it, too."
I nodded my head, satisfied with the answer. I guess going to Everett's house wouldn't hurt. Kai stuffed his hands into his jean pockets before walking down the porch steps and down the walkway to his parked bike. He looked better after the medication. He wasn't bending down awkwardly, nor was he walking slowly.
When he got on his bike, Kai pulled on his helmet and looked in my direction while fastening it. Right after he secured it, he waved his hand at me to go back inside. I nodded my head and waved my hand at him before turning to walk inside the house.
After he left, I cleaned his cup and put the chips away. My parents would be home soon. Tonight was pizza night. I didn't have to cook or prep ingredients for my mom to cook for dinner. I opened the fridge and took out three sodas. Grabbed some plates and napkins and set them on the dining table.
Finally, I walked to the living room and grabbed my backpack. I went upstairs to empty my backpack. Then I re-organized all the supplies to the ones that we would need for tomorrow. I threw the rest back into an empty box in my room.
Just as I finished, I heard my parents arrive and calling my name.
"Coming!" I shouted before heading out of my room and down the steps to greet them.
