Luxuries
You couldn't help but feel proud for the amount of work you'd put in helping Franky out. He ended up needing to do a fair bit of maintenance on some other things in the basement and took the time to teach you as he went. You could only assume he was confident that you'd stay long enough for the information to come handy again at a later date.
The entire day was spent down there busying yourself with manual labor, only getting interrupted a couple times when Robin came down to bring food and drinks and demanded the both of you take breaks. By the end of it, you were exhausted, unaccustomed to such prolonged hours of manual labor. In the past, you would have kept up with it rather easily but you'd really gotten lax with how much you'd pushed yourself to keep more physically tough. But you had a feeling that'd change if you really did decide to stick around.
When you both dragged yourselves back upstairs to the main floor later in the evening, you were covered in a layer of grease and grime. Your fingers were stained almost black and there was oil and other things coating your shirt and jeans. You were sure the clothes were beyond saving and while that was fine with the shirt, you were a little bummed about the pants.
You'd stopped at the edge of the aquarium and swiped at a thick bit of dirt on your jeans, thinking you just may be able to save the clothes for another time you did something messy.
"So how was your first day?" Robin asked.
She and Nami were sitting across the room on the bench, turned toward each other with their knees bumping together occasionally.
"Messy." You plucked at the edge of the shirt for emphasis. "But.....not bad."
"Franky is usually a delight to work with." Robin hummed. "I'm glad to hear things went well."
"You know, it'll be a while longer until Sanji has dinner put together." Nami cleared her throat and looked towards the second staircase. "I'd say there's enough time for a bath (Y/n)."
"Thanks, but I'll be fine with just a quick shower."
"Have you checked out our bath yet?"
"Upstairs? No."
Both the women suddenly gave you delighted smiles.
"Trust me, you're going to want a bath." Robin stood and turned towards the hall leading to the bedrooms. "Us girls can take one together, I'll get us something to change into."
"You're going to love this." Nami insisted as she got up and started nudging you towards the second set of stairs despite your objections.
Franky had quickly disappeared without a word, probably to clean himself off in the main floor bathroom since the girls had practically abducted you. That being said, you weren't interested on having to wait for him to finish so you could get clean. The bath was going to have to work, though you weren't sure if you could get as excited as Nami and Robin for a shared bath.
"I forget you never really had a chance to explore up here." Nami began as you resigned yourself to follow her up the stairs.
"Yeah, we seemed to only ever have time for the first floor."
"Well if you ask me, all the best stuff is up here." Nami hit the top of the staircase and gestured widely to the open space around her.
And for the first time, you decided that there may be a view comparable to the one at the coffee shop. This first room looked to be more like another sitting space but the wall facing the city was lined in large windows, showing an entirely different perspective of the place you used to call home. And even more than that, there was a domed portion of the ceiling, also covered in windows and letting in a startling amount of natural light despite the sunset that was beginning to change the sky's colors.
The coffee shop was at an angle that allowed you to look down at the entire sprawling city. From here, it was almost the opposite. You were craning your neck to take in the full view of skyscrapers and the bustling life as the majority of residents were making their way home. It reminded you of how small you were and somehow, that wasn't exactly a bad thing.
"We've got a telescope too!" Nami bounced across the room to the mentioned device, swiveling it around to point through one of the many windows. "It's actually super handy for getting a grasp on the weather around here on top of stargazing. Sometimes when I can't sleep, I like to come here and look at the stars."
"That's....really cool." You joined her, sliding your fingers down the cool metal.
"And through there," She pointed towards a closed door a short distance away. "is our personal gym. Zoro is pretty much the only person that uses it but you're welcome to it as well. And through there is the bath."
She motioned to one last door, this one cracked open just enough that you could assume it was currently unoccupied.
"Why are you guys so hyped for a bath?"
She giggled. "You'll get it when you check it out."
With that, you made your way across the room and carefully nudged the bathroom door open. And you thought the observation-esqe room was impressive.
The bathroom had a very homey, almost japanese feel to it. The floors were tiled and went a short distance before the remainder of the space was taken up by a large, round tub. It looked more like an indoor pool but at about half the size. There was easily enough room for the three of you girls. Hell, you were sure the whole crew could fit in it and still have plenty of room to spare.
"There's linens in here." Nami made her way to cabinet and took out a stack of fluffy, white towels. "And if you need an actual restroom, there's everything else you'd need through there." By the bathroom entrance was one final door, leading to something like a toilet you assumed.
"I can't believe you guys have something like this up here." You approached the edge of the bath and peered in.
There was a built in bench lining it almost completely, with the exception of the stairs leading down into it of course, and it was easily deep enough that if it was filled full, you were sure the water would go past your waist.
"I'm pretty sure it was the most expensive part of this building." Nami nodded as she placed the towels by the edge of the tub and kicked her sandals off.
"So how long does it take to fill?"
"Just a few minutes. Franky and Usopp made it themselves and had the plumbing done really well. Or so they say at least."
There was a button on the floor, right by the stairs to the tub, and Nami bent down to press it. And just like that, the room was filled with the loud sound of water filling the bath from multiple holes lining it's inner walls.
"I found something I think you'll find comfortable (Y/n)." Robin entered the room, barely audible over the rushing water. She was quick to close the door behind her and drop a pile of fresh clothes by the towels Nami had gathered before turning to face you with a bright smile. "So what do you think?"
"I think it's a little crazy that you guys built this on the second floor."
Both of the women laughed.
"We did it for the view." Nami answered as she pointed towards even more large windows. The building seemed to be full of them.
They were currently covered by heavy, blood red drapes, only letting slivers of natural light through where they met. That was until Robin walked around the tub to push them apart. While one half of the building showed the view of the city, this side provided the tantalizing sight of the ocean, vast and virtually untouched by the city population.
The deep blue of the waves met the pale blue sky the same way it always had, yet from here, it was even more beautiful than normal. The small figures of beach goers dotted the golden sands, playing, sunbathing, enjoying the temporary warm weather. It was calm, peaceful really.
"You guys picked a good spot for a base...." Your eyes were still glued to the windows. It had been too long since you'd last seen something so nice. Your old home above the abandoned diner had nothing like this.
"Right?" Nami began to pull her shirt up over her head and you realized Robin had also begun to strip. Shared bath, right. "Franky picked the location and Luffy was the one to okay it, since he's technically in charge."
You took your time following suit, carefully peeling away your grimey shirt and slipping out of the stained jeans after kicking off your boots as you unconsciously smirked.
"You say it like he doesn't act much like a leader."
Shoes were kicked off far from the bath and all three of you shimmied out of your pants and under clothes quickly. It was getting rather warm and humid and you were getting excited to properly clean yourself off in a bath. It'd been ages since you'd last had one, especially in a tub like this.
"Wel...he does." Robin was first in the water, smiling blissfully as it enveloped her body.
"When he wants to." Nami finished the thought and joined in as well. "Luffy takes more of a hands off approach when it comes to us handling our individual specialties but when it comes to his end goal, he's much more serious about that."
You stepped into the water a little more cautiously than the other two women, less because of the temperature and more because you were self conscious about being around them naked. If they looked closely, they could see the small, faint, silvery scars along your side, the reminders of the fight you had with Capone. But lucky for you, both women were too engrossed with enjoying the steaming bath to pay you much mind.
"Wasn't getting the city his goal?" You asked when you'd finally settled in the water, welcoming the way it warmed your body.
"It was the start of it, for him and every other gang. The One Piece is really what he wants." Robin explained as she tied her hair up to avoid getting it wet. When she was done, she sat on the bench lining the side of the bath and sunk in until her chin was barley above the water.
You'd heard about the One Piece before of course, everyone knew about it. But this was the first time you'd ever heard of the legendary treasure in connection with the city, or with someone actually believing it was real for that matter.
The story went that some old, long ago dissolved gangs had been known to hide large stashes of stuff, usually money and valuables on a regular basis within this city and many others in the roughest parts of the world. Plenty of said stashes had been discovered throughout the years, which you were sure was what led to the idea of the largest stash of all, one so large that if found by someone, it'd make them the ultimate force in the underground world.
But everyone knew none of that was real, or so you thought. Robin had answered so casually that you were sure she had to believe it existed, to some degree at least. There was no doubt in her voice, no hesitance. In fact, she was rather unphased by the mere suggestion of its existence.
"That's just a story." You shook your head and frowned. If this was some attempt at a strange prank, you weren't buying it.
Nami had turned around to face the edge of the tub and lifted herself up so she could reach across the tiled floor for a nearby wicker basket containing an array of soaps and shampoos. She glanced your way as she did so, a skeptical look in her eyes as her fingers managed to grasp at the edge of the basket and drag it close enough that the three of you could reach in with ease.
"Do you seriously think that?" She answered with a huff, immediately slathering her long hair in shampoo from a bottle she'd grabbed.
"Everyone knows it's a story." You insisted. "It's just a rumor someone started to keep gangs going strong, give them a purpose or something I guess."
This time Robin frowned, watching you with a slight, confused tilt of the head. "Did Kid never mention any of this to you?"
"We never talked about the One Piece. Not Kid or anyone else in the gang."
The women exchanged uncertain glances before returning to cleaning, but at a much slower pace. Nami, who was scrubbing her head vigorously just moments ago, had slowed to a snail's pace while Robin absentmindedly fiddled with a bar of soap, twisting and turning it with lithe fingers.
"(Y/n), Kid wanted to gain control over this city for the same reason Law and Luffy did. There's supposed to be a...clue of sorts hidden somewhere around here that hints at the stashes whereabouts." Robin looked at you with pity and it frustrated you.
"No." You shook your head adamantly. "He wasn't looking for fairy tales, Kid told me at the time that he just wanted control over the city to give the gang some safe grounds to work out of and give him an edge against others. That was it."
"It may be hard to believe (Y/n) but we're serious. Ask Law about it if you want but we're all here for that. Kid had made his intentions known before you joined in on everything and I guess we all assumed you knew....." Nami trailed off, fiddling with a strand of soapy hair as she stared down at the water intently.
"If that's true then why are you guys and Law still in an alliance? That wouldn't make sense."
"There hasn't been a need to dissolve it yet but you know how Luffy treats his alliances, it's a friendship to him."
"But you said Law wants the One Piece too, doesn't Luffy know that?"
"Of course, and Luffy treats it like friendly competition. He believes only the strongest will get it and when it comes to finally locating the stash, he'll prove his strength over Law and insist on keeping their friendship through it all. It's just how he is." Robin finished off the explanation and all three of you fell into a suddenly tense silence.
Water dripped down your bodies into the slowly cooling water below and echoed through the room.
They were serious about everything they'd said and as much as you didn't want to believe that something like this was kept from you, you wouldn't put it past Kid's gang to have done something just like that.
There was this creeping feeling that wormed it's way into your stomach, filling you with more anxiety and uncertainty than you'd felt in a long time. What did any of your time with Kid and Killer mean of Robin and Nami were right? Was everything that fell out of their mouths nothing but lies?
You weren't sure but you weren't going to dwell on it either way. The time you'd spent with them was over and done with. It didn't matter now.
"I don't know what I believe." You finally said with a sigh. "But what's done is done and I don't want to waste a good bath thinking about the Kid gang."
"Agreed." Both the women nodded, offering warm smiles.
You were hopeful that dinner and the next few days wouldn't be so confusing for you or having you thinking about the past. Maybe, with enough time, you'd be able to go one day without thoughts of the Kid gang entering your mind.
Not even once.
