We're the backbone of this country, darling
The next day Lana and Bucky returned to William's apartment, Lana with a bag with her laptop and some other stuff she'd need and Bucky with three to-go cups held together by a cardboard holder.
William had explained to Bucky what he needed him to do in the simplest terms he possibly could, which Bucky had been surprisingly successful in repeating, only occasionally making unsatisfied statements about the work. Lana sat across from him, writing down notes on a pad. A single airpod was placed in her right ear, and she nodded at whatever the person on the other end said.
"Alright, thank you so much, professor. I'll get back to you, alright? Yeah, go ahead and pass it on. Alright, bye now," she finished, finishing the call on the phone before pulling the airpod out.
"I spoke to that professor you suggested," she told William, grabbing her pen and jotting down things she'd thought of while on the phone.
"I loved professor Stevens, he was the best teacher at MIT," William said, sitting down next to Bucky, smiling contently; "What'd he say?"
"He suggested some students. First thing tomorrow two guys are coming," Lana replied, putting down the pen again.
"Coming where?" William asked, glancing at Bucky who didn't seem to be paying attention.
"Coming here," Lana replied casually.
"Here?!" William repeated surprised.
"This is our official office, Will," Lana reminded him.
"Yes, but it is also a one-bedroom in New York," William replied right before Lana's ringtone sounded again. She glanced at the caller ID before grabbing the airpod, putting it back in her ear.
"It's the web designer, just keep working, alright?" she said before accepting the call, exchanging some courtesies and small talk.
"Seriously? I'll get it on SoMe. Amazing, thank you, Elena!" she said before hanging up, turning to William with a big smile.
"Presale is launched and she fixed the SEO issue. I'm just going to try to spread the word on the media," she told before turning to her computer.
"Thank god, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to sleep over the SEO," William agreed sarcastically, hardly even looking away from his work. Lana shared a look with Bucky as she did a playful eye-roll, Bucky just smirking in response. A ping sounded from the computer and Lana returned her attention to it in time for the next ping, followed by a third one just a few seconds later. Followed by another one. In fact, they were followed by so many that they played over each other, a new one sounding before the last could even finish.
"Oh, uhm, uh, guys?" Lana said worriedly, clicking on the mousepad.
"What's going on?" Bucky asked with furrowed eyebrows, looking at Lana's baffled face.
"You hear that sound?" Lana asked, looking at William, who glanced at Bucky before looking at her.
"Yeah?" he replied weirdly.
"Each one is an order from the presale on the website," she admitted, breathing out the words.
"What?!" William exclaimed loudly, immediately getting to his legs and joining Lana, looking over her shoulder.
"I told Elena to put a max at 300!" Lana cried, clicking panicked at the mouse. Bucky stopped working, carefully watching the interactions between the two people.
"We can't do 300!" William insisted just as the sounds stops.
"Aaaaand that'd be 300 orders," Lana summarised, not daring to look at William behind her.
"It didn't even take 15 minutes!" he pointed out desperately.
"I think we might need to hire some more people," Lana said slowly.
"With what money? Hm?" William challenged her, taking a step back and running his hand through his messy curls.
"Well, 300 people already purchased the product, so maybe we'll use some of that money," Lana retorted, her genuine suggestion covered in a layer of thick sarcasm and plain annoyance that had Bucky looking down to hide his smile.
"How many people do we have to hire?" William asked weakly.
"You tell me," Lana replied dryly before turning her head to look at him; "We need someone to send the packages. So far we've only launched in the US, but I have a feeling we might still need a few people for that."
"We're going to need at least five more people to put them together," William told her honestly.
"We need a bloody factory, you know that, right?" Lana corrected him.
"Let's just start simple. Don't panic, alright?" William suggested, placing a hand on her shoulder; "For now, all we need is manpower to get the orders together."
"It'd be much cheaper to produce in another country," Lana argued.
"Yes, but we're helping the workforce in America grow. We're the backbone of this country, darling, and we're not even from it," William pointed out, placing his other hand on her other shoulder. Bucky tensed his jaw as he looked away, not bothering to continue assembling the lock as William had instructed.
"I'm gonna call back professor Stevens. Five students, you say?" Lana asked, turning her head up to look at William.
"Better make it ten," he admitted, looking down and smiling boyishly at her.
"That's great. Not like this place is cramped already," Bucky interjected, looking directly at Lana.
"Bucky's right," William agreed, not noticing that he wasn't getting any attention; "We're going to need somewhere bigger."
Lana shook her head slightly and blinked hard, turning her attention to William again.
"Right, so ten more students, three people on shipping. I have to find a new office, and we probably need to figure out someone to oversee this, we need to have an aggressive business strategy and get ahead on the market, so I should really be focused on that," she rambled.
"We launched thirty minutes and we have almost as many employees. That's great, just brilliant," William muttered with a deep breath. Bucky narrowed his eyes slightly, biting his tongue instead of pointing out that they hadn't even launched properly, that they wouldn't for another week.
"And I need to make some kind of agreement with a shipping company, I didn't even think of that," Lana continued.
"Don't freak out," William reminded her strictly; "Make a to-do list and get on it, alright? We got this." Lana took a deep breath before nodding, grabbing her pen.
"30 minutes ago, I suggested backing out. I just wanna remind everybody of that," Bucky pointed out quietly enough so he thought the pair wouldn't pay attention, grabbing his stupid lock again.
"Yes, and I ignored you then, and I will ignore you now," Lana just offered, sending him a teasing smile as William left her side to go back to his work.
