No one said there wasn't a reason

"We're back," Steve greeted immediately as they entered the conference room.

"I wasn't sure if I should come," Lana said, looking around the room. Everybody was in there, sat around the long black table. Bucky sent her half a smile and nodded to the empty chair next to him.

"So, what's going on?" Steve asked, sitting down next to Natasha while Lana sat next to Bucky.

"Well, we finally cracked the guy," Tony stated. He was standing by the head of the table, his arms crossed above his chest.

"You did?" Natasha asked, surprised.

"Don't sound so surprised. You're not the only one with tricks up their sleeve," Tony scoffed offendedly.

"Did you... Seduce him?" Lana asked slowly.

"What? No!" Tony exclaimed loudly.

"Lana, seducing people is not my only trick," Natasha told, rolling her eyes.

"I know, but it is my favourite trick of yours," Lana told, winking suggestively at the assassin, who just shook her head while smiling.

"So if you didn't seduce him, what did you do?" Bruce asked curiously.

"I talked to him, for god's sake!" Tony told, sitting down on one of the leather chairs.

"What did he say?" Steve questioned.

"He admitted to being Hydra, told us where he got his orders and the part of the plan he knew," Tony told, moving the chair slightly from side to side, annoying everyone.

"And?" Bruce encouraged.

"He gave me the location of the hydra base and told me what his orders were. Watch the winter soldier, don't engage unless necessary, get his schedule and habits, return with more manpower and get him," Tony listed up.

"But he did engage, he attacked us," Bucky pointed out. Lana placed her hand on his thigh, absentmindedly offering him the support he needed.

"That's a good point. He must have been eager to get to it," Steve thought out loud.

"No, that makes no sense. I've been out several times, when Lana was in the hospital I was constantly commuting, he could have attacked at any moment then," Bucky said, looking at Steve.

"That's true. You were plenty distracted. No offence," Natasha added. Bucky just lifted his hand in a 'none taken' gesture, placing it on top of Lana as he put it down again.

"Unless... He's been watching you at least since I got back, most likely, but he hasn't engaged because he didn't see a reason. You said you were distracted, you didn't notice him, but when you were out with me, you were very attentive. When he noticed you noticing him, he decided he had to act quickly," Lana theorised.

"He managed to go unnoticed by Barnes for at least a week, yet he was stupid enough to not have called backup when he attacked? No, it doesn't add up. He must've just started and jumped the gun," Natasha argued, leaning back in her chair.

"Except, we weren't that stupid either. Steve and Tony were on the way before he even realised Bucky was suspicious. You remember, I came back after calling backup and you said he was just starting to get suspicious then?" Lana reminded Bucky, who nodded in affirmation.

"By the time his backup showed up, there were three avengers present. No shit they backed out," Lana added. Natasha looked thoughtful.

"But would they just abandon a fellow soldier?" Steve argued, supporting Natasha.

"Yes," Bucky said flatly.

"Alright, there we go," Tony decided; "The good thing is, we've got the address of the hydra base. I say we strike now and strike hard, get as many as possible and interrogate. We'll be able to trace the entire organisation and unravel it."

"That's what we thought we did last time," Steve pointed out unimpressed.

"But last time you didn't have us," Natasha said, sending Steve a convincing smile.

"What about Loki? Any news on him?" Bruce inquired.

"Not yet. He's laying low," Tony replied.

"Would he just lay low for no reason?" Steve asked, grimacing slightly.

"No one said there wasn't a reason," Lana muttered.

"She's right. We just don't know it yet," Natasha agreed with a shrug.

"No matter what, that's not the focus right now. We need to use the fact that he's not making a mess and use the time to go down on Hydra," Tony ordered.

"Kinky," Lana commented with a sly smile, Bucky failing to hold back his laughter at the ridiculous comment.

"Tony's right," Steve decided, ignoring the pair; "Everybody suit up. Lana, Bruce, Buck, you're with over com."

"Do you remember the first time we did this?" Lana reminisced as she placed the headset correctly.

"We've literally only done this once, and it's not even two months ago," Bucky pointed out flatly.

"So you do remember!" Lana stated happily, spinning around in her chair while waiting for the team to arrive at the base. Bruce politely ignored the two and their constant bickering, trying to focus on the map showing the teams location.

"How could I forget, Doll?" James asked, faking a loving voice.

"All I really remember is you annoying me to death," Lana told with a shrug.

"And yet, you survived. What a shame," Bucky hummed thoughtfully.

"And, you flirting with me ruthlessly," she added, suppressing a teasing smile.

"I wasn't flirting," Bucky claimed.

"You were flirting," Lana disagreed, rolling her chair up to the big desk.

"It wasn't ruthless," Bucky continued.

"It was pretty ruthless," Lana just said.

"It was fitting," Bucky enunciated.

"Fitting to what?" Lana asked, laughing.

"To the situation!"

"How was it fitting to the situation?!" Lana asked, laughing even harder.

"You were cute!" Bucky pointed out; "And, you got so annoyed, you left me no choice but to continue."

"You suck," Lana stated as she finally finished laughing.

"You suck," Bucky retorted.

"Don't you wish," Lana muttered, zooming in on the map.

"Wanna make my wish come true?" Bucky offered, winking at Lana, who turned red. Ignoring her burning cheeks, she shook her head smilingly. Bucky smiled to himself as he turned his attention to the computer.

"Did you find my note?" Lana asked.

"How could I not? You had stuck it to my forehead," Bucky reminded her.

"And the list?" she continued.

"I found the list, but I'm not killing your dad, and I'm not killing that girl from your school who you thought stole your necklace," Bucky informed honestly.

"I know she stole my necklace," Lana corrected; "She was wearing the necklace, yet had the audacity to say it wasn't her? What a bitch."

Bucky rolled his eyes at the angry tone Lana had achieved.

"But that's fine. Any of the other suggestions will work," Lana then told, shrugging carelessly.

"Hey guys, I found a blueprint of the floorplan. It wasn't actually too hard, all considered," Bruce interrupted them. Lana rolled her chair over to him, looking at the blueprint over his shoulder.

"This is it?" she asked, furrowing her eyebrows.

"This is it," Bruce confirmed. Lana hummed, looking over the rooms.

"What?" Bucky asked her, walking over to them and looking at the screen.

"You don't think it's kind of... Suspicious?" Lana asked, looking at him.

"It's a hydra base, it's supposed to be suspicious," he reminded her.

"I know, but what's in there?" Lana asked, pointing at a room near the middle. The rooms walls were thick, and around what would be a metre around them were a secondary wall, placing the one room in another, slightly larger one.

"I'm going to assume Hydra stuff," Bucky suggested lightly.

"Oh, really? I thought this was where they stored the McNugget recipe," Lana replied quickly.

"What are you trying to say, Lana?" Bruce asked, trying to keep the two on track.

"I'm trying to say that this is weird. This room is inside a slightly bigger room," She pointed out, looking at Bruce.

"Like a Russian doll?" he questioned, correcting his glasses.

"Exactly like a Russian doll, but why do that?" Lana asked.

"Maybe it's a cell," Bruce suggested; "The floor plan is based on what Tony could get out of the satellites he promised me he didn't hack into."

"There's cells over here, why separate the cells?" Lana pointed out, ignoring the desire she felt to say 'Oh, honey' at Bruce's innocence.

"So prisoners don't talk?" he suggested.

"No, they only do that with special cases. It's more overcrowded dungeon, less private rooms," Bucky informed.

"Special cases?" Lana questioned; "Do you mean..."

"Could they be recreating the project?" Bruce asked seriously.

"It's possible," Bucky claimed. Lana looked at the screen, biting her lip. The room didn't look big enough for something like that, but what other options were there?

"We're here," Tony told through the speakers of the headsets; "Looks pretty dead, to be honest."

"Keep alert, alright? We don't know what they have up their sleeve," Bruce ordered.

"Copy that. We're approaching," Steve's voice sounded.

"Hey guys, can you bring me home a souvenir?" Lana questioned innocently.

"Lana," Steve said strictly.

"What? You got Bucky! I want a Bucky!" she said unhappily, leaning back in the comfortable chair.

"I thought Bucky was your Bucky," Bruce muttered, not bothering to make himself hearable for anyone over the microphone.

"Well, then I want a new Bucky," Lana decided, pouting slightly.

"Hey!" Bucky exclaimed, about to argue when yelling could be heard on the other end, followed by fighting. Lana looked at Bucky, who didn't look any calmer than she felt.

"What do we do?" Lana asked Bruce softly. He shook his head, sighing slightly.

"We wait," he explained.
