Chapter 21 - The Truth
Michael held my hand the whole way through the c-section. I would smile at him, and he would smile back.
"Baby A, a girl!" The doctor announced as he held her up. Neither Michael nor I could see her very well.
"Makenna," Michael whispered in my ear.
"Baby B, a boy!" The doctor yelled seconds later. Again, neither or us could see him that well.
"Ryder," Michael smiled at me and squeezed my hand a little harder.
A few minutes later, nurses had cleaned up the babies and brought them back to us.
"Your baby boy," a nurse smiled, handing him to Michael. Michael smiled big at the small boy in his arms.
"Your baby girl," another nurse handed the baby girl to Michael.
The baby girl had beautiful dark brown hair and pretty blue eyes. She smiled a little, and you could tell she had dimples. She was definitely Louis's child. The boy had nice blonde hair and eyes that looked identical to Michael's. He was surely a Clifford. We had Ryder Dylan Clifford and Kiersten Charlotte Tomlinson.
"Haven..." Michael looked at me after looking down a Kiersten.
"What, Mikey?" I wondered, smiling at him and trying to act innocent.
"Come on, Haven Lynn. I've been to junior high school. I've taken science classes. I've learned about the basics of heredity, and two people with blonde hair can't have a baby with brown hair.. Two people without dimples can't have a baby with dimples," Michael began to get angry. You could tell he was tense. It showed in his face and his tone of voice. He was trying to sound calm, but with all those other things showing he was tense, the calmness of his voice wasn't fooling me.
"There are things called mutations..." I told him. I still wasn't ready to tell him.
"Haven," Michael spoke through gritted teeth, "Tell me what's going on right now, or as soon as I can, I'm getting a paternity test."
I sighed, "It's called heteropaternal superfecundation. The twins have different fathers.."
"You were cheating on me?" He almost screamed, "These twins aren't mine?"
"You weren't listening," I calmly looked at him, "Ryder is yours, Kiersten is.. she's..."
"She's whose? Let me guess... she's Louis's.." He guessed. I nodded.
"I fucking knew you two were together behind my back.." He huffed, "Here. Take your children. I'm leaving. I'll be back... sometime."
I was left alone with the two babies in my arms, still in the emergency c-section room. I was then being stitched up, then I was taken to a room. I began to cry as I watched Michael stomp out of the room like a little kid who didn't get his way. I understood that this was way more serious, but I didn't know how to explain to him that I still loved him, but I also loved Louis. It was hard to put to words.
------
Soon, I was taken to a room with Ryder and Kiersten. Someone soon came into the room to visit. I had no idea who it was because I had my head turned away from the door.
"Hey Kitten," I heard his voice. I instantly knew it was Louis.
"Lou," I turned towards him, smiling, "You're here?"
"How would I miss the birth of my child? I knew I wouldn't be able to be there when it was born, but at least I'm here now. I saw Michael out in the waiting room. He seems to be crushed about this," he sighed.
"I knew he would be.." I pouted, "But the babies are here now, and there's no way to turn back time and fix this."
"I'm fine with that," he walked closer, "Can I see my baby?"
"I'll give you one guess to which is yours," I looked up at him and his eyes traveled between Ryder and Kiersten. His eyes lit up when he saw Kiersten.
"Kiersten Charlotte Tomlinson," he began to cry as he picked her up in his arms.
"Legally, we'll have to get a paternity test to be one-hundred percent sure, but it's obvious she's yours. And also, Ryder has Michael's eyes, so there's no denying he's Michael's," I explained to Louis.
"She's so beautiful," Louis smiled at his daughter in his arms.
"She has your color of hair, and the color of my eyes," I looked at her, then looked down at Ryder who was still in my arms.
"I know," he nodded, "How did Michael react to this? You know, right after he found out?"
"He wasn't happy. He told me he'd be back, then paused before saying 'sometime...'. I got worried, and I'm still worried about what he's thinking. I didn't tell him she was yours. He guessed that. He told me he knew we were having an affair behind his back. I got really upset when he said that. If he knew, why didn't he talk to me?"
"I don't know. Maybe he wasn't sure. I'd suggest letting him go for a while until he decides to come back to you. He will come back once he's calmed down. Also, your parents and siblings are out in the waiting room, but I don't know when they're coming back. I asked them, but they said that they would wait until doctors told them they could come back," he changed the subject. I was sort of glad he changed the subject.
"I love you, Louis. You know that, right? I love you," I smiled at him.
He looked at me and nodded, "I love you, too."
"I'm just so confused between you and Michael. It's just so much at one time. I can't just break up with him to be with you, and I wouldn't do that because I love Michael too. I'm just really torn right now, and I'm sorry about that," I apologized, pouting.
"It's okay, Hav. I understand. I would never make you choose between Michael and me. Maybe because I know Michael would win-" he joked and began to laugh. I shrugged. I did love Michael a lot, but I loved Louis quite a bit too.
