Chapter 8

Shylah shivered as everyone huddled behind a large snowdrift. The winds had picked up until the blowing snow prevented them from seeing anything that wasn't a few inches from their face. Currently she was sharing the group's warmth between Gwen and Tosh while Jack took the outside of the group with Ianto on one side while Rhys took the other end. They didn't know how they got here, where they were, or if they could find the others and get back home, and now they all had to deal with Gwen's husband. They'd found him in the fair and ever since Gwen had dragged him after them, which slowed them down... though it wasn't as much as this situation was.

"So have you heard anything from The Doctor yet?" She yelled over the wind.

"Not yet." He shouted back.

"Contact them!" Gwen responded and Shylah felt her shivering violently.

Jack sent her a look. "I've tried but if the battery runs out we won't be able to contact them at all."

"We're all going to die here...!" Rhys groaned.

Gwen comforted him, though her face said she agreed with her husband. "No we aren't, Jack will think of something. He always does... Don't you Jack?"

Shylah looked over at Torchwood Three's leader, his face was grim as he looked at the white, cold world they had been taken to. He finally spoke, his voice strong but at the same time held a hint of uncertainty. "The Doctor would know what to do."

"The Doctor isn't here." Ianto responded a bit coolly. "You have to solve this, you've solved worse."

"Give him some time, I don't know how anyone can think with this blizzard going on." She muttered and pressed closer to Tosh, who was staying quiet... probably thinking about possible solutions.

There was silence among the small group as they fought against the freezing wind and snow to stay alive. The whistling sound of the wind was the only thing that filled Shylah's ears as she tried to think of a plan as well. They could easily track the others with the device Jack had but the problem was it would be too easy to also walk in circles, not to mention the fact the weather alone could kill them in seconds if they didn't stay in this semi-sheltered place... Even worse was the thought of The Doctor, Murdar, and Owen traveling by themselves, sure they could find both of the Time Lords but Owen... he wouldn't show up. If he were lost out here like they were then... well he would be dead.

"I'll do it." Jack finally spoke up. "I'll try to make brief contact before the battery goes. Any messages to send other than our location?"

"You could tell them to stay put." Tosh grumbled with irritation. "It would make getting to them faster once this storm clears up."

"Hopefully it will soon..." Shylah replied with doubt in her voice, who knew how long this storm would last, they could starve or die of hypothermia out here if they waited too long.

There was quiet among them once again before the communication device in Jack's hand mumbled a few garbled sounds. Jack frowned. "You're going to have to speak louder, I can't hear you."

"I said: what do you want?" The Doctor's voice shouted clearer over the device, even shouting Shylah could tell something was wrong wherever he was.

"The storm's keeping us in a shelter, once it's over we'll meet the three of you where you are now. Can you stay there?" Jack asked over the wind.

There was a long pause and she thought they lost the call for a moment before The Doctor answered. "Two of us. There are two of us... Outcast was killed, we haven't seen her regenerate..."

Shylah paled and took the communicator. "What do you mean? She can't be dead, she comes back; she regenerates! Where is she Doctor?"

"I don't know. We couldn't stay there or we would've fallen in the avalanche too." There was a crackle on the other end.

A second later Owen's voice was speaking. "Look, we can only stay in our location for about two days before we'll need to find new supplies, by the look of the sky I'm judging your location is still in front of us... the storm doesn't look like it will move out though. That gives you about a day, perhaps a day and a half if you're lucky. Don't waste your time staying in that shelter because you'll die anyway. Just come find us; you still have the tracker, right? Use it and get here quickly before something else finds you."

"Great." Jack responded sarcastically. "Just stay put... and Doctor, try to find a way to get us home."

Jack put the communicator away and stood up, the wind and snow nearly causing him to fall back down. "You heard him, we need to keep moving."

Shylah staggered to her feet with the others. "We can't leave though! Not until they find Murdar!"

"We leave when we find a way to." Jack snapped, their situation making him short tempered. "There's nothing we can do about finding her when we're barely alive as it is!"

She fell silent and nodded. He was right; they couldn't waste energy searching for one person when they needed to get home. Murdar would have to find her own way back... if she was alive at all.
