Chapter 7
"Wake up!" Owen jumped slightly as The Doctor's voice yelled in his ear. "Hurry, we may already be too late!"
That made him wake up fast and Owen scrambled to his feet to stare at the Time Lord. "Too late for what? Where's Murdar?"
"I don't know!" The Doctor looked stressed as he stared at the blank world of snow. "Her tracks were covered... I can't lose her too, not like Rose..."
"What if her device malfunctioned again? It could've left us stranded here while she's somewhere else." Owen paced around at the thought before stopping as he saw a broken branch sticking out of the snow. He'd kept watch long enough to know that hadn't been there last time he'd been awake. "She went this way."
The Doctor followed him as he started to run. "Did she do anything to suggest she was going to leave?"
"No." Owen replied, though he recalled the terrified look she'd sent him. "Maybe something forced her to leave."
"It could be hunting us then." The Doctor responded and glanced around. "Run faster, allons-y!"
Owen ran faster as the man ran ahead of him, he was determined to lead the way to finding Murdar. The knee deep snow on the ground slowed down their progress of course but at least the sky was clear for now. As they continued to travel they quickly grew tired not to mention Owen had lost most of the feeling in his body, though his skin wasn't showing signs of frostbite yet. Finally however they found more of a clue than just barely visible footprints and his hunch that was tugging him in this direction: Murdar's leather jacket was lying in the snow, nearly covered by the white flakes but the black stood out in stark contrast.
"Something isn't right." The Doctor announced as he shook the snow free of the jacket. "There has to be something here... everything about this world feels wrong."
"You're telling me." Owen stared at the world around them, he felt like they were in the middle of nowhere, no, like they were in nowhere... limbo. "She never takes that off except to wash it."
"The tracks end... they're too covered up now, the space is too unprotected from the snow." He watched The Doctor look around with a pained expression.
This time he stared as well, something was lurking out there that wasn't friendly, and now they could be its prey. Owen's gaze flickered straight again, back towards the large hill of snow ahead of them, a mental tug pulled him towards it, stronger than before. "We keep going straight."
He started walking again, more like a pained shuffle, and shivered as harsh gusts of wind began to whirl around the landscape and blow up snow to sting their eyes.... Owen couldn't put in words how much he hated this world. With the snow and the absolute nothingness that made up this parallel world, not to mention the lack of food or water, he didn't know how long any of them would survive. As they finally got to the top of the hill however he stopped abruptly to stare down at the strangest sight since they'd gotten there.
"Bloody hell..." He cursed and stared down at the temporarily abandoned campsite. "Someone's living here."
The Doctor walked up from behind him to get a look as well. "Strange... wonder what they could be eating. There hasn't been any sign of animals."
Owen shuddered mentally at a thought that went through his mind. "Except people."
"Haven't seen much of those either." The Doctor commented.
"Dead bodies under the snow, you may as well be living in an over size, too cold, freezer." Owen growled and started walking down the slope, this was where Murdar was, or had been at least; he could sense it.
"Outcast!" The Doctor shouted as he darted forward.
Owen stopped looking around the outskirts to see the Time Lord kneel down by a darkly dressed figure. He quickly ran over with medical treatments running through his head, not that most would work without equipment. Then he stopped went The Doctor stood back up.
"What is it?" Owen moved so he could see and recoiled from shock... that was Ianto's rotting corpse, chunks of flesh had been carved off and a few feet away the man's head rested on a spike. "My-"
An agonized scream cut him off and the two whirled around in the direction it had came from. Owen started running as fast as he could through the thick snow, nearly falling and joining the fight at the bottom of the hill when his momentum built up too much.
"Murdar!" He shouted with relief as he recognized the Time Lady.
It didn't last however because a moment later a man wearing a black furred cloak came into view with a ticked off expression and blood on his daggers. The worst part was the man looked exactly like he did; Owen started taking out his gun only for The Doctor to stop him.
"Wait." The Time Lord ordered. "Let's get closer."
"He's going to kill her." Owen hissed as he finally took in the blood sprayed across the ground and seeping through Murdar's white shirt.
"Oh no, he won't." The Doctor responded. "That's you right? Why would you kill a team mate?"
"I could think of a few reasons actually." Owen responded with his usual sarcasm.
Half way down the hill he could make out what was being said as the two combatants circled each other.
"...Owen, what's happened to you? Don't you remember who I am?" Murdar questioned and cast the real him a quick glance.
The Owen in the cloak gave a short laugh. "Remember you? You're the one who we had to kill to stop the world from ending! Not that it helped. The screams in your head, they echoed across time and space, you went mad! No, you were mad to begin with!"
She backed away; Owen could see the blood leave her face. "What?"
"The best part was..." The cloaked Owen smirked and followed her step for step until he seemingly pinned her, though from where Owen stood all he saw was more snow behind them. "I killed you myself."
"That almost makes me laugh." Murdar sneered and lunged forward with her knife.
The cloaked Owen sent a deep wound into her side before kicking her to the ground. "You're even weaker than she was, what a waste of your full potential, not even letting it out to play."
Owen wasn't sure what his doppelganger was talking about but he did know he couldn't just stand watching anymore. He took out his gun and shot a bullet into the man's shoulder and knee, Murdar took action once more before he could take the shot to the enemy's head and the snow world's Owen fell forward... and disappeared over the invisible cliff. Owen ran forward with The Doctor at his side.
"Murdar!" The Doctor reached her a second before Owen did and took care not to further injure her.
"Move I need to see what I can do to stop the bleeding." Owen crouched down beside her and went straight to looking at the wound in her side. "Shit... Uh, Doctor, hold some ice or snow to it... we can't cauterize the wound but the cold might help the bleeding stop."
He looked away to grab a handful of the freezing cold snow before hearing a feral growl, staring back at the cliff he saw the cloaked Owen pull himself back up. He once again took out his gun and aimed for the head only for his double to throw snow in his face. The weapon fired but instead of the target falling again the ground did.
"Run!" The Doctor's voice ordered from a few feet away.
Owen stood up with difficultly as the sloping ground dragged him down, and reached for Murdar only to see the other Owen drag her back over the edge with him... Her scream was lost over the sound of cracking ice beneath the snow. He scrambled back to safer ground and looked at the edge then back to The Doctor, who had sank to his knees and was now staring at the last place Murdar had been.
"No..." The Doctor was pale with horror. "She's dead... I'm alone again."
Owen stood up and brushed off the snow, not that it helped much, before cautiously going over to the edge. "She'll regenerate."
"How many did she have left?" The Doctor was beside him now, eager to find the half Time Lord.
"Unless Murdar lied, six... so five left now." Owen frowned; the only body he saw was that of his doppelganger, impaled on jagged sharp pieces of ice that were sticking out of the ground like fangs.
"Murdar!" The Doctor shouted after a few more minutes of nothing but Murdar didn't respond in any way. "Outcast where are you?"
Owen started to walk away, he wasn't going to waste his time freezing to death of someone who seemed to be dead already. "We need to find the others, use the communicator and see what direction their tracker is saying we should go."
"I'm so sorry Outcast..." He heard the Time Lord whisper over the edge before walking over to him with a downcast expression in his brown gaze.
