Chapter 6
Murdar shivered and raised her head out of the freezing snow to see the white world surrounding her as she shivered and got to her feet. Looking around she couldn't see anything that stood out against the snow except a distant dead forest covered in ice... Where was she?
"Bloody hell..." Owen's grumbling voice came from her side, as he stood up covered in snow. "What happened?"
"We left your Cardiff." The Doctor replied as he looked at a Murdar. "Though she could tell us what time period we're in."
She quickly brushed her fingers over her choker TARDIS and the answers went to her mind. "The year five thousand, the Earth went into an ice age at three thousand and only grew colder, since then humans have struggled to survive. There's nothing left."
"This is our future?" Owen looked around and rubbed his arms for warmth. "Glad I'll be dead by then."
"You didn't let me finish." She responded. "This is the future on a parallel world. You do exist, or did, it doesn't say who's alive or not but according to TARDIS data this time period corresponds with the one on our Earth despite being dated differently... don't ask me to explain I don't know."
"That's not possible." The Doctor shook his head. "This is not possible. The end of the Time Lords ended travel between worlds; anything that happens like that is only a mistake that has bad consequences. Last time the gap between worlds was messed with Cybermen attacked Torchwood One. Tell me Outcast, how did you do this?"
"I didn't." Murdar glanced down at her choker. "It must've malfunctioned, I've been transferring information to the bracelets since this didn't work too well. Perhaps it had an unplanned reaction to the transfer, it is pure technology, not like a true TARDIS should be."
"Can we get back before we freeze to death?" Owen huddled in his dark colored t-shirt.
"I'll work on it... we should get shelter though, it's still snowing." She started walking in a random direction; everything looked the same so why bother trying to figure out which way to go.
Behind her she heard The Doctor give Owen a joking remark. "Should've worn a jacket."
"That would be back at the cinema." She informed him. "It was a bit warmer there than it is here."
"You two don't seem too bothered." Owen responded as he walked close to her.
"Time Lords have a lower body temperature." She said and suppressed a shiver. "But trust me, home was basically the opposite of this weather."
A communicator went off and they glanced at The Doctor as he answered the call. "Jack, I was just going to contact you. I found your missing agents-"
"Where the hell are we Doctor? What did you do?" Jack's voice shouted over the speaker.
"Jack what do you mean?" Murdar took the communicator and looked around them.
"One moment we're in a fair and the next we're in someplace that looks like Antarctica!" He was furious. "What is going on?"
"I don't know we're in the same situation." She continued to look around. "Is there anything that stands out?"
"Of course not!"
"Calm down." Murdar snapped back. "No need to get your trench coat in a twist."
"Fix this." Jack ordered.
"I'll fix something when I see you... and it won't be getting home." She threw the communicator back to The Doctor. "Shut him up."
"He's right though." The Doctor replied after a few minutes of silence. "We need to fix this and get back before the carnies and their leader escape. Cardiff will lose most of its population if we don't save them."
"Great so now we're in the middle of nowhere on a time limit." She growled through clenched teeth.
"You forgot the part where we're becoming human ice cubes." Owen reminded her.
"No, I'm ignoring it." She let a shiver escape her as she stumbled through the snow. "We need to keep moving though if we don't want to die faster."
Daylight passed by overhead as they walked for miles through the snow and cold. They managed to reach the edge of the dead ice forest by the time the moon was rising in the sky, night was colder than day and Murdar was ready to fall asleep and never wake up. Instead she leaned against a tree and looked at the equally tired men.
"I'm guessing none of you have a lighter to even attempt making a fire." She sighed and broke off a small branch. "Not that this wood is any good... not once the ice melts."
"I hate camping out." Owen mumbled, his breath billowing in his face as he spoke. "Last time there were cannibals roaming around."
"I don't think anyone's around now." The Doctor looked equally grim by now, though the light that danced in his sad gaze hadn't disappeared.
"We should still have one person keep watch." Murdar responded. "The other two can sleep for a bit. We can take turns sleeping in the middle of everyone."
"Great." Owen sank to the ground. "I'll take second watch."
"I want first." The Doctor replied.
Murdar nodded tiredly before dropping to the ground and leaning against the tree beside Owen, who was freezing like the snow around them... not that she was much better. The thought that even with the three of them against each other they didn't share much heat worried her a bit, what if she lost a life to this? And what about The Doctor? She wasn't sure how close he was to thirteen yet. Any of them could die. Eventually though she gave into sleep, sinking faster than she had in a long time into the world of nightmares.
The figure was chasing her, she didn't dare look back to see who or what it was but it wanted to kill her. Her Soul Knife was in her hand ready to block an attack as she swerved to the side to run towards the dead trees, if she made it there she'd have a better chance. That chance went out of reach though as the snow turned to ice beneath her feet and she slipped, collapsing hard onto the ice and losing her weapon. That was when she turned around to see the dark dressed figure of Owen stalking toward her with a bloodied knife in his hand.
"Owen..." She scooted backward and picked up her knife again. "Please."
Blood was running from a cut on his face as he dragged her back to her feet only to stab her in the chest before kicking her back to the ground. "I want to survive Outcast."
Murdar stared at the blood bubbling around her chest and felt a heart stop, pain filled her as she got back to her feet. "So be it."
She limped at him once his back was turned and lurched forward, sinking her blade into his spine and listening to his screaming. Another cut went into her gut and she stumbled back, underneath her the ice groaned and split completely as Owen drove the dagger he held into it.
"You destroyed this world once, I won't let you do it again." Owen snarled at her as she tried to avoid the breaking ice.
"What do you mean?" She gave him a paled expression. "Owen?"
This time he didn't answer and she heard voices shouting her name from behind her but fell through into the unbearably cold water below before she could see whom it was. Darkness consumed her and she felt herself dying as her body shut down, she couldn't do anything to stop it as her numb form sunk deeper.
Murdar jolted awake with a jerk and saw Owen looking down at her with a frown on his face, she gave a startled yelp and pulled away closer to The Doctor. Confusion flashed across his gaze and as she calmed down Murdar relaxed.
"Scared something's going to get you from the dark?" Owen teased quietly to avoid waking the single sleeping form.
Murdar shuddered slightly and felt warm arms subconsciously wrap around her from behind. "No, just... I forgot where we were."
He didn't believe her, the look he gave told her that, but Owen didn't press as he went back to scanning the dark world around them. "I can't see anything in this darkness. There isn't light from anything... even the stars are covered by the clouds."
Murdar followed his gaze upward before shifting to The Doctor's other side. "Get some sleep, I'll take the next watch now."
"It's still my turn."
"I can't sleep." She argued lightly. "I'll get you back up if I get tired."
Owen stared at her for a moment longer before getting comfortable in the snow. Murdar watched him for a few minutes until she was sure he was asleep, once he was she got up and darted off deeper into the woods... the other two were soon out of sight. She slowed and kept throwing looks over her shoulder until dawn light started to light the snow around her; it was then that she saw the first signs of smoke ahead of her. Thinking it could be Jack and the others she ran towards it with renewed energy.
