Chapter 3
Owen found the fair a two days after he'd started his search for Murdar, something that was a bit surprising considering how loud it suddenly sounded, he wasn't even sure the fair was supposed to be in town. He paused his walk to stare at it a bit; it looked like a place Murdar would've gone; something else seemed to be pulling him forward too, stronger than just a hunch. He walked farther into the loud crowded fair and was almost immediately approached by a carnie wearing a strange plant like get up.
"All access wrist band?" They handed him a neon green band with a grin. "Free for limited time. You can get free rides, games, and food."
Owen was about to speak when the chubby man waddled off to approach a couple that had just arrived as well. With a shrug he put the band on and started to resume his search for the Time Lady, he was slightly worried the others hadn't called him but shrugged it off, as the feeling he was close to Murdar grew stronger. He weaved through a large group of laughing teenagers and saw her sitting at a table with an extremely blond man, as he got closer however he saw her turn her head and jump to her feet. Owen was pleased to see the blond give him a jealous expression before sending Murdar one last longing look and leaving. He watched the blond quickly disappear into the crowd before looking back at Murdar.
"I didn't expect you to be here!" She was grinning madly at him, her blue and gold eyes were swirling with excitement. "Did the others come?"
"No, they're waiting for us to go to the rift activity sights that have been popping up everywhere." Owen replied before walking back the way he came. "Didn't you get the calls? I told them I would come find you... that had to be about two days ago? Where were you?"
"I've only been here two hours and if you haven't noticed you can't hear much here." She pointed out. A minute later a new song came on and he saw her eyes brighten even more. "I love this song! Come on Owen, we can get back to the others later."
He was about to protest but her strong tug along with the deafening pound of the beat thrumming through the ground silenced him. He had to admit, it wouldn't kill anyone to stay here for one song. Murdar guided him through the crowd to a more open space before smirking at him; Owen gave her a questioning look.
"Have you been drinking?" He couldn't smell alcohol on her but perhaps all the other food was blocking it.
"Of course not." She replied. "I'm just relaxing."
Owen examined her a bit before giving her a nod and moved closer to her. "So who was the man? He isn't going to be coming back for you is he?"
She glanced over at him with a smirk. "Why do you ask?"
He shrugged as she stopped standing still and discreetly moved to the music. "I was just wanting to know my competition."
Murdar stopped and frowned at him a comment, her abnormal enthusiasm was draining. For a moment Owen thought she was going to attack him until the smirk returned as she leaned against the wall beside him. "Jealousy doesn't suit you... No, I doubt he'll come back with you around. He probably thought you were going to shoot him or something."
"Good." Owen responded as he pulled her closer. "Otherwise I just might pull a gun on him."
The sudden change in the situation made him hesitate a bit. This wasn't right, why had she said she'd only been here two hours when two days had past? Not just that but how could a fair just show up without anyone else but the lot here knowing it was in Cardiff? A feeling of unease filled him but as the songs and shouting, along with Murdar's presence, lulled him back into the present the suspicion faded into the back of his mind. Of course there wasn't anything wrong, he must've just been too busy looking in other locations to see them arrive. If something wrong was going on then one of them would see it, everything was fine.
"Let's go on some rides." Murdar pulled him by the wrist. "I'll pick first."
"Do you know how many people die at the fair?" He asked as he followed her towards Ring of Fire. "I mean sure it isn't as many as it once was but-"
"I don't care." She interrupted. "If I die it will be worth it."
"Not all of us have thirteen lives." He shuddered as the memory of darkness flashed through his mind.
"I have six left." Murdar reminded him with a pointed look yet unconcerned tone.
Owen held his hands up in mock defense. "Oh, six lives left, so sorry! That's practically none."
She gave a light laugh at his sarcasm before nudging him. "Come on, the line is over there."
Another wave of nervousness scratched at the back of his mind, which had nothing to do with the ride, but he ignored it completely as Murdar continued to beckon him to go after her. If something were wrong, Torchwood would inform him. Having a day of fun would be worth Jack's wrath anyway... especially with his Outcast... confusion on why he'd called her that flashed through him but he shrugged it off, the way he always knew where she seemed to be and the way she always kept her gaze on him... sensed his presence... Of course, it made sense: they were one. Ever since he'd come back they had a link, nothing would damage that.
"I'll pick the next activity." He growled in her ear as she paused her impatient pacing.
She returned his gaze with a hum but didn't speak any words as she stayed in one spot to lean against him. A moment later she stood upright and looked at him and the rest of the people in line, which Owen could see stretched a bit far. "Looks like you have a few minutes Zombie Man."
"I'm still alive, I have a heartbeat and temperature." He rolled his eyes at her nickname, a ping of concern at the word 'temperature' though he couldn't remember why.
Her cold hand went over his heart as she kept up her teasing. "I can't feel it, perhaps you'll have to pick an activity that will pick up its pace."
Owen stared at her, she usually wasn't this direct... not that he would complain. As a Time Lord without a place to go to, Murdar wouldn't just abandon him like- no- he wouldn't think of her. He held her close again. "I think I might have an idea forming."
