Chapter 2
Shylah jumped at the sound of Jack's urgent shout, she glanced up from the laptop she'd been playing the same boring repetitive games on before joining the others on the hub's main level. She couldn't help but grin slightly. "Is something finally happening?"
"We have got major activity." Tosh replied, her eyes bright with excitement as she showed them the activity levels on the screen.
She glanced at Jack, who was holding a container with a glowing hand in it. "Uh... why do you have a hand?"
Jack ignored her question and continued to stare transfixed at the hand as he gave them orders. "He's here, Tosh, Gwen, get to work on narrowing down the location. Ianto, call Owen and Murdar, break is over."
"Owen's already here." Ianto turned his head to look at the medical bay. "I think he's running another physical to make sure he's still alive and human."
"Then get him out here." Jack turned to Shylah and she stood straighter in anticipation. "Get the car ready."
Shylah nodded and rushed off to grab the keys from behind Ianto's desk. Going to the garage she unlocked the black car, its shiny paint gleamed in the ceiling lights. The black lettering saying Torchwood almost blended in completely with the paint, unlike Torchwood One's had been, her old Torchwood had cars clearly stating what the people driving in them were. After the months of settling in here she had found Jack was more secretive to the public than her mother had been, not to mention he didn't kill an alien on sight unless there was proof it was a threat. That had taken a bit getting used to but now she didn't know how she had let Yvonne do that. No wonder everyone back in London ended up thinking Torchwood was the real monster, though the government had covered up its existence.
Ignoring the thought she shook it from her mind and drove the car out front where Ianto and Jack put the kits, which contained field equipment, in the back of the car. "Is Murdar going to be here soon or are we picking her up?"
"Owen left to get her." Ianto replied as he got into the car. "He said he'd meet us at the location."
"Great." Shylah said, watching Jack get in beside her while Gwen and Tosh ran out and got in back.
She gave a small laugh as Gwen struggled to sit comfortably. "We need a bigger car."
"You could take Murdar's." Tosh offered.
"She would rather we all pile into a car so no one could see out a window before letting someone drive her car without permission." Gwen responded as Shylah speedily pulled onto the street.
"Where are we going?" She called back to the other girls.
"The red brick church a few blocks toward the water." Tosh handed her the GPS.
A few minutes later, literally like three minutes with Shylah's speeding and the strange lack of traffic, they all piled out of the car. She heard a strange sound, a bit like a whirling mixed with a machine like humming, and followed Jack as he ran toward the noise, a hopeful look on his face. It was when she could make out the blue police box finish materializing that she realized whom it was that had caused the disturbance. A pang of worry went through her, if The Doctor was here it couldn't be anything good.
"The Doctor." Shylah gave Jack a curious look as he continued towards the blue box. "Do you know him?"
"You could say that." Jack replied, earning a few more curious looks as the others stared at him.
The TARDIS doors opened and a man with dark brown eyes and messy brown hair stepped out, his eyes immediately took them in before staying on Shylah and Jack. After a few more seconds of silence he spoke in a melancholy sounding tone. "She's gone."
"Doctor?" Shylah questioned, she wasn't sure what he meant but it was clear something bad had happened.
"You look different." Jack commented, though she saw concern was still in his gaze.
The Doctor gave a small smile. "I got a hair cut."
"Where's Rose?" Jack got a bit more serious and Shylah realized the blonde girl hadn't followed The Doctor out of his TARDIS.
"In another world." His voice was sad again, though Shylah could tell he was trying to be happy. "But she has her mother and father, Mickey's there too, she'll be fine. Better than that, she'll be safe."
"Why are you here?" Shylah asked, worry creeping up on her even more. "Is there going to be another alien attack?"
"Well... I wouldn't say an attack just yet." He looked happy for the change in subject as he walked around a bit to see the city. "The TARDIS took me off my original destination to bring me here though. Usually that means something or someone is about to cause trouble, but then again I run into trouble wherever I go it seems." He looked back at them. "Is this more Torchwood?"
"Yes." Jack replied and gave him a look that dared The Doctor to criticize his team. "That's Tosh, Ianto, and Gwen. I'm sure you already know Shylah and me."
"I trust you haven't messed with the rift."
"No, we just make sure to fix whatever it spits out." Tosh stared boldly at the Time Lord.
"Which would be what, recently?" His gaze was drifting around again.
"Nothing for awhile until you showed up." Jack informed him.
Shylah saw the man frown. "Doctor, do you know what's happening?"
"Not a clue!" The Doctor responded cheerfully before walking with them back to the car. "Come on then, let's go find out!"
Shylah fell into step with Jack before whispering to him. "I think our Doctor may have to see a doctor if he keeps blindly going into trouble. I only met him once but even then he didn't seem quite... thoughtful enough to create a strategy, though he must've done something otherwise no one would be here."
"He regenerated." Jack shrugged, obviously not as concerned. "Maybe his face isn't the only thing to change."
"He definitely didn't act like this last time, he's a bit... spacey, no pun intended."
"Everyone will keep an eye on him, if something is wrong we'll know." Jack assured her before quickening his pace to catch up to The Doctor.
