Chapter 18

"You're sure it's gone?" Jack let out a long breath, his voice still holding a hint at anger for their disobedience and frustration for losing The Master.

"We saw it fade away." Ianto shuffled in place and glanced over at Owen for confirmation.

He nodded. "Yeah. And I ran some scans and checks on Murdar's body... everything checks out. It shouldn't be back."

"You two got lucky."

Jack stared them down for a moment longer before walking off, Ianto following seconds after him. Owen huffed to himself and looked back at the body on the medical table. Her soul knife was lying among his medical equipment as he debated on using it, though it would mean needing to find something to power it up and give her the life force. He pondered the idea, mauling over the consequences. The entity wouldn't be returning soon, right? Even if it could surely it wouldn't try through her again. It would need thirteen more lives anyway.

"I don't want to tell you want to do," The Doctor stopped at the railing and looked down at him, "but I would think about what she'd want."

"Thought you were leaving."

"I am. Just thought I'd check in first... How's Tosh?"

Owen glanced at the injured woman. "Stable, resting. She'll be fine."

The Doctor nodded and straightened up, glancing once more down at Murdar. His dark eyes distant and lost in thought for a few seconds. "Tell her I said goodbye."

With that, the Time Lord left, heading off for his next adventure... wherever that would take him. Owen grabbed the knife and snuck out minutes later, quite aware The Doctor had expected him to do this and could've warned the others. But he was met without resistance. He could only take that to mean bringing her back wasn't going to destroy the world.

It would take him a while to find a victim. He wasn't against murdering someone but he wanted them to deserve it. It wasn't something he could figure out quick enough. Luckily, the life force didn't have to come from a human. He knew Jack would disapprove if- and probably when- he found out, but it wasn't like the guy could stop him.

"What's Jack going to do? Kill her?" Thinking about it, he almost wouldn't doubt it, though he didn't plan on letting that happen.

Hours went by before he returned. The Hub was dark, empty except for Tosh who was still asleep. He took his time checking on her vitals, anxious about actually going through with bringing Murdar back and wanting to stall for time. He really hoped this wouldn't cause another situation like Susie. Although, when Murdar had brought Shylah back they hadn't found any negative consequences...

Owen took a deep breath and fiddled with the soul knife as he finally walked back over to the half Time Lord. He hooked her up to monitor her vitals before sinking the knife into her corpse. The glowing red within the blade faded as it was transferred to her body and he pulled the blade out, tossing the weapon onto the small table nearby.

Nothing changed. He stared at the monitor, waiting to see anything to suggest this had worked. Had he waited too long? Unlike the Resurrection Gauntlet, there was a time limit to this method... had he passed it? They'd never tested how long they could wait. Maybe he hadn't done it right? Did she need more life force than a single victim? She was only part human, it could be the issue. He sighed and turned his head away.

A shudder caught the corner of his eye and he looked at Murdar. For a moment he believed he'd imagined it... No, there it was again. A shallow breath but one nonetheless! Owen watched in faint amazement as life slowly began returning to her, the monitor finally reading off strengthening vitals.

"Owen." Dread settled into him as Jack's voice reached his ears.

He looked up at where the man was staring down, observing the situation. "When did he get here?"

Silence stretched between the two for several minutes before Jack walked down for a closer look. "...You brought her back?"

"Yes."

Jack's gaze bore into him. "That was a dangerous decision. You didn't know what would happen."

Was he just going to lecture him again?

"...Keep an eye on her. Run tests, I don't want that thing coming back." His leader turned away and walked up the steps before looking down at him. "Report the results to me otherwise you know what I'll have to do."

"You won't have to." The confidence in his tone didn't seem to faze Jack, as if the man already knew what the results would show.

"I trust your judgement."

Was that right? It hadn't seemed like that a few seconds earlier. Owen didn't bite at the potential argument however. He simply moved on with the tests, routine for any Torchwood member that would go through something like this. They didn't show abnormalities to suggest that entity could use her to come back- he couldn't wait to drop that on Jack's desk.

Murdar stirred briefly, her eyes opening and looking around in panic before finding him. "Wh-"

"Ah." He pushed her shoulder back down. "Stay. You're still recovering."

"I didn't have another..." She trailed off tiredly. "...How?"

"How about we discuss this when you're not half conscious?"

She gave a sound of begrudging agreement, her eyes already closing as she fell asleep again. He sighed and fell back into a chair, exhausted himself. It wasn't going to be comfortable in a few hours when he woke up, but at the moment he could care less. At least this 'adventure' had ended in a somewhat happy ending, especially with the two on the way to full recoveries. "Probably the best ending we could get after all that... Jack better give us all a break, we deserve it."

Welp, hope you liked book 2 and the series as a whole!
Not entirely a happy ending but it's not one of the most devastating ones either lol.
