Chapter 10

Owen slowed his pace before running faster as he saw Murdar stop resisting the damage being done to her dying body... she would regenerate, he knew that, but what would happen if the version of him from this world didn't stop his attack?

"Doctor, what do we do? I shot him, he fell off a cliff, and now he has a blood large hole in his body! Why isn't he dead?" He growled and pulled out his gun to fight.

The Doctor glanced over at him as they ran. "I have no idea, let's go find out. Allons-y!"

He tried to keep up with the Time Lord but the cold air seemed to be freezing his lungs now and the more he ran the more numb the wind made his legs. Owen stopped running and fired his gun, the bullets hitting the undead man in the side and head. He watched The Doctor drag Murdar farther away from the fallen enemy, who was starting to get up already, and started examining her. He forced his body to move again to reach Murdar's side only for his double to knock him to the ground and shoved a dagger into his shoulder.

Owen screamed despite the dulled pain before elbowing the cloaked man away and scrambling to get farther away. "Doctor, a bit of help over here! He isn't dying!"

"We don't need to kill him, we just need to get away." The Doctor responded.

"We need to kill him or he'll kill us!" Owen argued before muttering under his breath. "Bloody cannibals... every time I have to camp out."

He shot at the cannibalized version of him as the monster ran towards him but the cloaked figure didn't stop and a second dagger went into the ice, just missing his throat. The ice cracked slightly under their weight as the cracks around the dagger widened and spread. Owen pulled out the dagger in his should and shoved it through the emotionless black eye of his attacker, which resulted in the cloaked Owen to give a pained hiss. He started to free himself from the cannibal's grip only for a hand to tighten around his throat and slam his head against the ground... he stayed still as the blow stunned him. Where was The Doctor?

As if on cue the Time Lord shouted as a distraction, which was joined by another male shout. Owen turned his head to see Jack standing beside The Doctor, Murdar's body behind them... as still as a cadaver in a morgue. Shouldn't she have regenerated by now? He slowly got to his feet only to stagger and drop to his hands and knees as his head finished clearing. Once the world was still again he got back up and went back to the attack just in time to see black mist swirl around the snow world's version of him as a ghostly skeletal figure reached out of the dead man's body and struck Jack down with a mere touch... what the hell was happening?

"Jack!" He moved faster before The Doctor held out a hand to stop him.

"Wait." The Time Lord ordered.

The undead man started walking towards them and Owen backed away, not wanting to share Jack's fate. A few moments later however, Jack was back on his feet and shot several bullets into the corpse's spine and skull, crippling the already ruined body even more. It still kept coming despite the slowing pace.

"Run!" The Doctor commanded and turned away from the fight.

Owen gave Jack a confused look, why wasn't he dead still? Where were the others, had they died? Questions raced through his mind as he ran towards Murdar's still form, he couldn't leave her there to be eaten. When he went to pick her up however, her eyes opened with that same black emptiness that the undead cannibal possessed... he quickly jumped out of arm's reach as she sat up and glared at the enemy, blood still trailing from half regenerated wounds.

"Doctor?" He glanced at the retreating man.

The Doctor shook his head. "Just run! One touch and they could kill you!"

"You heard him, let's go!" Jack pulled him away and back to his feet.

Owen didn't turn around as he was dragged away, instead he watched as the two possessed beings went for the kill. Murdar was in much better shape corpse-wise however, and this time she seemed to have the upper hand.

"Finally... power is revealed..." The undead Owen nearly fell as he lurched towards her and away from the others.

What happened next made all of them stop running. He watched as a cruel smirk went across Murdar's features before a blast of shadowy energy burst forth and a ghostly skeletal figure ripped into the cannibal's body... completely destroying it before it to disappeared in smoke. Owen ran back the way they had come as Murdar fell to the ground limply, this time her regeneration rapidly healing her body instead of only doing half a job of it.

"Help her up." He ordered as she blinked in disorientation; her eyes were noticeably normal now.

The Doctor wrapped her jacket around her as Owen and Jack helped her up onto her feet again, her body was still limp as she tried to recover from her regeneration. He felt her shiver slightly as her glazed eyes tried to focus. "Murdar, are you alright? Do we need to stop?"

Her eyes fixed on him. "No... no... we need to keep going... He'll catch up, we'll all die."

"Who will?"

"Your double... H-he's following me, he must've left me here to die when you came..." Her gaze drifted to his bleeding shoulder. "Owen, you're hurt! Are there others?"

"No. You killed the only one." Jack corrected, though how he knew that Owen couldn't guess. There wasn't anyone here who could tell them. "I don't know what you just did but you finally found a way to kill him."

"I didn't kill anyone." He felt her legs give out and slowly eased her onto the ground.

"We're stopping." Owen decided and when he looked back down at Murdar awaiting her complaint he found her already passed out. "This is as good of place as any for now."

"I'll keep first watch." Jack offered as they settled into the snow and ice. "Doubt we need one but if she starts acting strange again... I'll wake you up."

"Do either of you know what's wrong with her?" Owen glanced at both of them; surely the Time Lord or his leader would know something.

The Doctor looked down at Murdar with curiosity and fear. "Not a clue. That wasn't a trait of the Time Lords."

Jack however spoke closer to Owen's worries. "Her eyes were like his... so were her abilities."

"She isn't a monster." Owen growled.

"I never said she was." Jack retorted before standing up. "Get some rest, I'll keep watch until we're ready to set off again."

Owen settled in the cold snow beside Murdar while The Doctor wrapped his arms around her as he took his place on her other side to keep her warm. Now that he was back in the snow the numbness was taking over again and his eyes closed almost immediately against his will. Fear nagged in the back of his mind, if he fell asleep what if he never woke up? He starting to find it harder to breath... soon they would all be dead, or at least he and Jack would, the two Time Lords might last a bit longer. Based on his medical knowledge, he would say they only had a half hour left... if not less.
