Chapter 1

Murdar heard the faint sound of fair music drifting through the near silent streets of Cardiff. Torchwood was currently bored, what with the Weevils still sticking far below ground in the sewers after the Letifer Anguis attacks two months prior, and there didn't seem to be any rift activity besides the bit occasionally caused by her alien DNA and tech to top it all off. At least now they trusted her as a member of the team, in fact Tosh was helping her build an improved version of her TARDIS. When it was done they would be bracelets like Ismia's had been, all she had to do at the moment was wait for her choker to finish wirelessly sending the data to the bracelets and then she could go for a test run. Until the remaining days were up however she had been wandering the streets in hopes of finding anything to fight.

Now that the sound of fair music was filling the air though, she decided to skip her early morning rounds of the city streets and head for the soothing yet heart-racing sounds of fair music. She had to admit it was a bit odd that it had appeared so suddenly but shrugged, it wasn't like she knew much about fairs in Cardiff... or fairs in general. The closer she got the more she could smell of the unhealthy, yet delicious smelling, food. Despite the early morning she saw plenty of people were already milling about in the trash-strewn streets talking and playfully shoving their friends while shouting at others through the crowd. Something about the scene seemed a bit familiar to her, though it was a bit hard to place until the images seemed to replace the world around her.

The buildings were tall and still unfamiliar for the most part as she walked the street of London. Today it was extra loud and smells unusually sickeningly sweet with the scent of fried things. Looking to her left she stared up at the blonde woman who had taken her in a month before along with her slightly older daughter.

"What is this?" She asked in confusion, she hadn't been on Earth for more than a few months, was this a normal thing to take place in the middle of London?

"Your parents never took you to a fair?" The young blonde girl asked in surprise.

Murdar shook her head in response. "No."

She snickered a bit. "Where did you come from, under a rock?"

Her adoptive mother scolded her child. "Rose, what have I told you about making fun of others?"

Rose looked away, already seeing something to do. "Let's go on that ride!"

"Go get in line, I'll get the wristbands." Her adoptive mother told them as she walked away. Her real name was somewhere but Murdar couldn't quite place it... what was it?

Murdar followed Rose through the crowd and joined her at the back of the line before staring up at the tall ride in front of them a bit nervously. "You like this?"

"Of course, this is the best ride here that we're tall enough to ride!" Rose responded confidently before changing the subject. "So why didn't your parents ever take you to the fair?"

"Uh... well..." She searched for a response that wouldn't freak the human child out. "We didn't have the money I guess."

Rose's smile fell from her face a bit. "Oh, umm, sorry. At least you get to come to one now though!"

"Yeah." She agreed before scuffing her black tennis shoe on the ground. "The music is great though... better than the kind I used to listen to... I like it."

"What kind was that?"

"I don't know what it was called, but I remember it was slow, not like this at all. My ki-family enjoyed listening to stuff with deep meaning in the tone, at least this kind is fun while performing deeper meaning in lyrics." Murdar replied, feeling the beat of the music vibrating through the ground and into her body, perhaps being stuck here wouldn't be so bad.

Rose's mother came back and held out the wristbands. "Put those on and show them to the man when it's your turn."

Murdar impatiently waited next to Rose, who was staring at the people ahead and already on the ride with fierce intensity. The longer she stayed waiting the more she wanted to ride the swings, the wind through her hair would bring a cool relief to the heat that had gathered from the compacted crowd of people. Finally though, the ride unloaded and she raced Rose forward before showing the carnie her wrist and rushing to get in a seat. Beside her Rose was waving wildly at her mother.

"Mum, watch us! Are you looking?" Rose shouted and Murdar smirked before joining in.

Murdar heard the music and voices from the memory turn into screams and she gave a whimper of pain as the real world spun around her. Blinking a few times she blurrily found herself leaning against the side of a building while her body trembled like a leaf on the wind. What had just happened? Her head felt like it was going to burst, she groaned before staggering off. Nothing like that had ever happened before, where had the memory even come from? Whatever had just happened it was done now.

"All access wrist band?" She looked to her right to see a carnie dressed in a plant themed outfit handing a neon green wristband over to her. "It gets you free rides, food, and games. The best part it these are free for a limited time today."

"Really?" She gave him a suspicious look.

"Yep!" He handed her the band before she could say anything and walked off.

She stared down at the band for a moment before putting it on, hopefully the man was right, though she didn't know why he would lie. Looking around, Murdar started searching for the nearest thing to check out. Finding a short line to a ride she walked over and started to relax as the music and smell of food enveloped the world around her. At least now she wouldn't be bored anymore...unlike the others. A grin came over her face at the thought of their bored to death faces. In the distance she swore there was a slightly familiar noise of something alien showing up.
