To feel the ground tickled your feet, to feel your muscles stretched as you take a run-up to jump above the dead tree, you ran with all your might.
The wind rushing through your hair enlightened a smile on your face as you landed carefully on your feet. The adrenaline pulsing through your veins made you run faster and you hummed in delight. You were going to break your speed record. However, everything comes to an end, right? It can end by being reasonable or end in pain.
« I can do it, » you thought, your legs pushing further and further.
You were coming from a wealthy family and it provided you with a great amount of help to become the best runner in the world. Professionals, champions, specialists doctors had come to your doors to help you go beyond your limits.
Your legs screamed for relief, a pulsing pain burning your feet but you ignored all these warnings and kept doing the thing you do best: running.
Running was for you like breathing. You couldn't run at least once a day. It was a drug, an addictive drug.
Your favourite place for running was the forest as it was full of unexpected turns, floors and path to take. You were not afraid of getting lost in the woods because you knew you would always find your way back home.
The race of your heart, hammering faster in your chest to keep up with your speed begged for a break, but you denied it, pushing your body beyond its bounds, its limits.
You ran before you walked, always overstepping the boundaries of your body but it was who you were: doing the unexpected.
Nevertheless, one day, you asked too much to your body and it betrayed you in the worst way. Your muscles shut down, stopping the primary gear to run further and you fell face first. Time slowed down as you felt stopped in mid-air while the rest of your body was propelled forward until your figure roughly met the ground.
The daredevil you were was forced to retire.
Your legs were the most precious to you, they were your life, your job and your future but it turned into ashes when you had an accident. A bad accident. You attempted to jump higher than the human average height and for a moment you passed above the obstacle, flying higher than you had ever been but it came with a price. Your legs took the side effect, the gravity bringing you back to reality as a tremendous pain ripped through your body, an awful scream escaping your lips. You tried to stay up, to move but you couldn't and you fell. Your legs didn't respond to your silent orders now.
The angel had fallen to the ground.
After that event, you changed. The once hopeful girl disappeared into the desperate one, the gleam of hope dead in your eyes.
You tried every solution to heal your legs, to make them run again. You could walk, yes, but what was the point when you were born to run?
You travelled around the world, spending your family fortune to doctors who all said you were lucky enough to walk, but running was out of the question. Each negative answer killed your heart, your purpose to live but you kept on trying to find the cure.
You don't how you landed in Kamar-Taj, You just followed a lost legend about a mystical remedy. A paper in your hand, a rough bag on your shoulders, you knocked at the wooden door.
« Please, please, be the one. » you prayed silently, your mind hoping for this restless quest to come to an end.
An Asian man welcomed you, eyeing carefully and you straightened your posture, ignoring the pain in your legs and kept the eye contest with the hazel eyes of the man until he stepped aside, letting you in. While you locked eyes with the man, mustering all your determination in your gaze, you opened yourself, letting the vulnerability showed to the stranger. You hated judgement, but in order to heal, you were ready to let your ego on the doorstep and show who you really were: broken and in need.
A grin slowly made its way to your face as you stepped forward, entering the estate of Kamar-Taj.
« What is your name? »
You looked at the Asian man, observing his strange orange outfit contrasting with his tanned skin.
« I'm Y/N. Nice to meet you, sir. »
He scrunched his nose in amusement.
« No one ever called me 'sir' before. My name is Wong. I know why you are here. »
You tilted your head to the side, confused.
« Is he a magician or something ? » you thought, blinking in surprise.
He raised his hand up, showing you the long dark corridor.
« Go at the end of this path and there you will find the answer you're looking for. »
On these wise words, he left, leaving speechless. You barely had time to register what he had said, he was gone.
« Strange, » you said out loud and shrugged.
You looked at the way Wong advised you to take and a shiver of apprehension rolled down your spine. You crossed the dark corridor, glimpsing the light of hope at the end and your pace sped up. As soon as you stepped out of the corridor, you tilted your head to the side. A man was sat at a table, a set of books next to him and his eyes were hazed in deep concentration. He was wearing a blue outfit, very similar to Wong and a layer of red was circling his shoulders protectively.
You cleared your throat to catch his attention. :
« Am I in the right place ? » you asked, unsure.
The man raised his head up, his storming blue eyes locking with yours, and your heart missed a beat. You observed his elfin features, the sharpness of his jaw, his slicked black hair with if you pay attention, white strands, and a cleaned beard. However, what struck you was the intensity of his gaze, as if he was seeing through your soul, analysing your mind with a simple glance. You blinked and took a step back, a feeling of uncomfortableness overwhelming you.
« I think you are, Y/N. »
« How do you know my name? »
He closed the book he was reading, a « clap » echoing in the room, you realised was a library and got up. As he walked towards you, facing you completely, you took the time to admire him, or should you say checking him out.
He leant on the table, crossing his arms over his chest and ignored your question :
« The real question is: How can I help you? »
You nodded, pushing a strand of hair behind your hair as stress and anxiety rose in your chest.
« Can you? Really? »
Your voice was filled with doubt but a small smirk enlightened the man's lips.
« My name is Doctor Stephen Strange and yes, I can help you. »
A genuine smile tugged at your lips, a smile of hope which had disappeared for months. The former spark of determination glowing again in your eyes and Stephen noticed these small changes.
« Welcome to Kamar-Taj. »
He extended his hand towards yours, which you immediately shook, a gloved hand meeting yours.
« I found the right place, » you thought, a wave of relief invading your body, like a burden finally being lifted off your shoulders.
« I'm going to run again, » you said, looking at Strange right in his eyes.
He nodded at you, leading you out of the library to show you your future room.
« It will be a long process, but yes. You will run and perhaps you will even find more. »
It was the beginning of a promising future, at the sides of Doctor Strange who you later discovered was a superhero of some sort.
A/N: So what did you think?
