Fear.
All you feel is fear pumping through your veins like fire licking flammable twigs and slowly turning into a blaze.
« Don't let your fears control you, Y/N » you said over and over, like a mantra to calm yourself.
But it didn't work.
The final moments of the battle between you and the beast roaring inside reached its climax until only one of you still stood.
This time, it wasn't you, it was the dragon. The scaled fearless creature which was the dark part of your mind. It was your wild side, the part of you which can not be tamed or controlled, a bit like Doctor Banner and the Hulk.
However, each time, the beast rises, your heart aches. You were afraid of the pain you could deliver, afraid of the damages you could make and mostly afraid to cause death.
This state was one of the reasons you had sought Doctor Strange : to help you control the beast inside you. Of course, he had taken you under his wings in the temple of Kamar-Taj, teaching you how to control your emotions, how to put a barrier between the dragon which craved for revenge and freedom and you who just wanted to be yourself and help people. However, he didn't the trigger to your transformation and he learned it the hard way.
Stephen liked to tease people, even to show off which pissed people off. And one day, it was too much for you.
One thing you can say about the sorcerer is that he is as stubborn as a mule and he wanted to know something about your past and more specifically the moment the beast overwhelmed every inch of your body and mind. However, this period of your past was one of the hardest moment of your life, the only day you didn't remember what happened when the dragon took the whole control of your body for two days when someone tried to kill you. Not only you didn't know what happened, but you did know people died. And this germ of fear rooted itself in your heart and slowly grew until today, it bloomed in a bright explosion.
« Y/N, I need to know more about your transformation » Stephen stated, following you in the corridors of the temple.
You sighed.
« I already told you it's my emotions which triggered the change »
« What kind of emotions? And why a dragon ?» he asked, typing the information on his phone.
You frowned at his behaviour. Did he think you were a lab rat?
« I don't know, Stephen. Now I have things to do, » you replied, trying to snicker out of his questions.
It failed.
« Wait, how do you feel when you change ? » he pointed out, without thinking a second about how you were feeling.
You sighed loudly and stopped dead in your tracks. Dark thoughts were running through your mind, some of the beasts and some from the angered part of you. Who wouldn't be irritated by such painful questions?
You answered slowly, in a very stern tone, almost threatening him :
« You want to know how I feel? How I lost the control of my own body to be replaced by a mystical beast which isn't supposed to exist? How this wild creature ripped apart the stability, the kindness of my mind to be filled with fury, greed, and death? How I am not only in pain but also unable to defend myself against this side of me?! It is as if someone was tearing my skin apart as if someone had thrown a wave of blazing fire on my body ! It is a living nightmare! I can »t get out of it ! This is why I came to you in the first place Stephen ! »
You yelled the last part, the pounding of your heart echoing in your ears, the blood throbbing in your veins like a drum, and the slow desolate roar of the beast waking up from the ashes of your mind. Stephen was speechless, his mouth slightly open and he stepped back when he saw the slight flickering change of your eye colour.
Immediately, he put his hands on your shoulder, trying to calm you down.
« Listen to my voice, think about peaceful thoughts, okay ? »
His deep voice was like a thin wave of water upon the growing blaze of the battle, but it wasn't enough. Not this time.
« I can't control it. » you panted, wincing in pain when you felt the burning sting of the claws growing.
« After all, Stephen, you wanted to know how it feels, now you know ! » you spat, letting the anger embraced you as well as the dragon.
You groaned in pain, the beast coming out, clawing its way out. Stephen let go of you, watching you transform into the awful beast you were forced to live with.
« What have I done ? » he thought, watching in awe the human form of his student disappear under the scaly skin of the monster of legends.
You were gone, once more.
The dragon, bright black with acute blue eyes with a flickering of scarlet, fixed Stephen who instinctively stepped back at the intensity of the gaze. It was full of hate, anger, and mostly pain. He realised the beast had never been loved before, and that maybe all he needed was to be taken care with patience and love.
But it was too late. Dear, dear Stephen, why don't think before talking ?
The beast roared loudly, his scream breaking the glass and piercing the ears of Stephen who winced.
His tail hit the wooden wall which cracked under its strength and fully faced Stephen. Its ebony chest was as massive as a mountain, the sharp claws were rooted in the wood and its fangs shone at the sun rays piercing through the windows. Fortunately, the sorcerer understood quickly he was the enemy or mostly the prey and that he had to run, quickly. His cloak levitated him in the air, escaping through a window, the dragon followed him quickly behind. The roar the dragon made once he burst out of the temple was a pure roar of freedom as if the beast hadn't been released for a while and needed some fresh air. It flew in the air, his wings battling the wind to support its weight and threw a wave of flame which burns houses. Screams of fear soon echoed in the village, people running to escape the monster and Stephen watched in awe the gradual damage of the dreadful beast. He watched your animal form disappear into the wilderness of the mountains, leaving a trail of flames behind you and slowly, he followed you, helping people in the process.
When he reached you, he had never seen you like this ever before. You were a mess, sobbing and clutching yourself. Your body was covered with black dust, probably ashes and your hair was falling in front of your eye, blocking your view to the appearance of Stephen.
« Y/N » he muttered, mustering his courage to profusely apologise. It was his fault, you were in this state.
« I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked you that, I was an idiot. »
His voice faltered and only silence responded him.
« Listen, I'm not leaving you until you get better. I will find a way for you to control the dragon. I have a theory which might work. »
You slowly gazed at him, covering your naked body with your arms. Stephen, as the gentlemen he is, lent you his cloak which wrapped itself gently against you, like a pet.
« A theory ? »
He nodded.
« The dragon didn't scream of anger, or pure hatred, but of fear. He is in a world he doesn't know about and his instinct of predator urged him to find a safe place. That's why you changed back here. Here, you could no longer harm someone. »
You gulped.
« So you're saying the dragon is a shell to protect me when I feel threatened? »
« I think so. And I can help if you let me. »
You looked at him right in the eyes, falling in his cerulean colour and saw the spark of sincerity shines in his pupils. Besides, he had seen you in your worst state, before, during and after the transformation, what worst can possibly happen ?
« Okay, on one condition » you argued, tightening the cloak around you.
« No more questions about my past. If I want to talk about it, I will, understood ? »
« Crystal » he answered and offered his hand.
You gently took it, feeling the soft layer of leather encompassing his hand and squeezed it while Stephen opened a portal to go back to the temple.
« Now, my little Smaug, you need to take a shower and I need my cloak back » he teased and your cheeks reddened at his comment.
A/N: So any thoughts?
