4 ⚡️ Home sweet home

The most dangerous person is the one who listens, thinks and observes.

"You'll find out very soon." The man stepped aside, and the camera cleared, revealing a little girl tied to a chair. Her mouth was gagged, and she seemed to be sleeping. Jungkook's heart raced. Who was this girl? Was the enemy trying to blackmail him using a child?

"I'm telling you again, I don't know who you are, and I have nothing to do with this girl. You can't blackmail me like this. Do whatever you want, but if you dare to mess with me, you will face the doors of death," Jungkook growled, his voice laced with fury.

"Woo, I'm scared," came a sarcastic remark as the figure shifted, revealing Jongki himself. Unlike the masked man, Jongki showed no fear. Jungkook's jaw clenched, and he tightened his grip on the chair he was leaning on.

"What do you want?" Jungkook's voice sent chills down the spines of everyone in the room.

"Simple. I want you to surrender."

"And what if I don't?"

Jongki's smile was charming, disarming even. It was a smile that could lead many to folly. Just an extra detail: he was asexual. "You will. Very soon. Once you find out who she is..." The screen darkened, abruptly cutting off the call.

Jungkook inhaled sharply, his breath catching in his throat. He pushed the chair away with force. "Jungkook!" Jimin shouted as he watched him leave without a word.

"Leave me alone," Jungkook replied, not bothering to look back as he stormed out. Jimin knew all too well what was coming next: the gym room would be locked down for the next few hours. For Jungkook, working out was the best way to release stress, but more than that, it was where he devised strategies and crafted plans for the battles ahead.

"You are ready to be discharged tomorrow." Taehyung smiled at the elderly patient, watching her eyes light up with joy. "Remember to take your medications on time and avoid any stress. I've spoken with your son about the rest."

"Thank you, doctor," she replied warmly. "You're not just a good doctor; you're a wonderful young man. Your lady is indeed lucky to have you." A broad smile spread across Taehyung's face as thoughts of his wife and daughter flooded his mind.

"Sir, the Chairman wants to meet you," his assistant nurse informed him. Taehyung nodded and excused himself, making his way to Seokjin's office.

Name: Dr. Kim Seokjin

Profession: Chairman of the hospital Saviour. General physician.

Likes: Dad jokes and dedication in work.

Dislikes: Very serious personality and ones who insult doctors.

Jin greeted him with a warm smile. "How was your day?"

"It was the usual," Taehyung said, loosening his tie and plopping down on the sofa.

"The operation is scheduled for next month," Jin informed him, referring to the assemblyman who had suffered a cardiac arrest. The man had received temporary treatment, needing to attend to election matters before agreeing to the surgery.

"Hyung, can I visit Eomma today?" Taehyung asked, his voice laced with longing. It had been too long since he'd seen his mother. Though they kept in touch by phone, he missed his hometown.

"Of course! She will be so happy. Let's go together!" Jin beamed, his enthusiasm contagious.

As evening approached, the Kim brothers finally reached Daegu after a four-hour drive. Taehyung felt a wave of nostalgia wash over him. The town held countless memories—like the time Seokjin had sprained his ankle running and had to be piggybacked home, or the moment when Jin fiercely defended him against bullies. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he reminisced about those childhood days.

After ringing the doorbell twice, the door swung open. Mrs. Kim's smile brightened even more at the sight of both her sons. Her lips were plump like Jin's, but her smile was distinctly rectangular like Taehyung's. "Taehyung???"

The younger cardiologist melted into his mother's warm embrace, a wave of comfort washing over him. No one could replace a mother. He cherished the hug until a sharp tug on his ear pulled him back to reality.

"You naughty boy! How dare you leave the country so suddenly? And how dare you return after six years?!" Mrs. Kim twisted his ear painfully, her tone a mix of love and reproach.

"Ah! It hurts! Eomma, I'm sorry!" Taehyung yelped, while Seokjin chuckled at his brother's predicament as he was ushered inside by their mother.

"Jin, get in and close the door!" she called out, bustling around the house.

Dinner was a delightful chaos. The family caught up on all the missing pieces of their lives, with Mrs. Kim sharing amusing anecdotes from their childhood. Laughter filled the room as they reminisced about the happier times, especially when their father was still alive. They were a joyful little family, and for a moment, it felt like time had turned back.

After dinner, Taehyung retreated to his childhood room. The bed wasn't as soft as the one in Australia, but it felt comfortable in its familiarity. He smiled at the study table, recalling the countless nights he'd spent studying, pulling all-nighters. He wished he had made more memories during his student life instead of living inside books like a nerd. He often found himself at a loss for words when Taesoo asked about his childhood adventures.

The next day was a rare day off for both brothers, and they decided to stay in Daegu until evening. Taehyung relished the feeling of waking up without the weight of work on his shoulders. It was as if he had been transported back to his teenage years, free from the burdens of adulthood.

The ringing of his phone pulled Taehyung out of his daydream. His face lit up at the caller ID. "Hello?"

"Taehyung." His wife's usually charming voice was now laced with worry. Instantly, he sensed something was off.

"Hey, what happened? You don't sound good. Is everything okay? Is Taesoo alright?" Anxiety churned in his stomach as he fired off questions.

"Nothing... it's just—first, tell me how you are. Are you doing well? Is anyone bothering you?" She bombarded him with questions, which was unusual for her. Sri typically preferred to keep things concise.

"I—I'm good. Why do you sound so tense? Be honest with me, Sri." His heart raced; her tone sent alarm bells ringing.

"Taehyung..." His name fell from her lips, heavy with desperation. "I—" Suddenly, the sound of glass shattering cut through the line.

"What was that?!" Taehyung jumped to his feet. "Hello? Sri! Answer me! Is Taesoo okay??" After a moment of chaos, Sri finally responded.

"The window broke. It was probably the crow pecking at it. Taesoo is at school. I'll call you back after I clean this up."

"You sure you're okay?" Taehyung wasn't convinced.

"I'm fine. Take care. Bye." She hung up abruptly, leaving him with a pounding heart. The echo of the glass breaking still rang in his ears, and an overwhelming urge to rush back to her gripped him. He stood frozen in place for several minutes, battling the rising tide of anxiety.

"Tae?? Come down! I have something to show you!" His mother's voice broke the spell, prompting him to head into the bathroom to freshen up. He tried to convince himself that everything was fine, that he was just overreacting.

What had started as a strange morning quickly morphed into something even weirder when Taehyung walked into the dining room. He nearly received a shock equivalent to 440 volts at the sight before him. His mother was laying out pictures of various girls, with Seokjin hovering beside her, excitement radiating off him.

"W-What are these??" Taehyung stammered, his eyes nearly popping out of their sockets.

"Your potential wives," his mother replied matter-of-factly, her tone leaving no room for misunderstanding.

"How long are you going to stay single?" Seokjin chimed in, a teasing edge in his voice.

"I—" Taehyung faltered, unable to voice the truth. How could he explain that he had a family? What would they say? Everyone knew Sri. They would surely insist on involving the police, and he couldn't bear the thought of Taesoo being affected by that. He couldn't do that to his daughter.

"Tell me if you have someone in mind. I want to see my grandchildren before I die," his mother said, her words piercing through him. She already had a grandchild, yet she couldn't even see her.

Jin laughed heartily, but Mrs. Kim quickly silenced him. "You too, Jin."

"Eomma!! Why me??" Jin protested, feigning innocence.

"Ask Sora out and get married," she replied, referring to Jin's girlfriend, who was five years younger and focused on her budding career as a fashion designer. Seokjin was too shy to take that next step, and it made the whole situation even more amusing for their mother.

Usually, Taehyung would whine and throw tantrums at the mention of marriage, but today he was silent. Seokjin noticed how his brother's eyes seemed lost in another world. Concerned, he walked over and placed a reassuring hand on Taehyung's shoulder. "I know it's hard to move on after what happened five years ago... but you have a future ahead. You can't live like this." He made sure their mother didn't hear; she had already gone through enough after the news of Taehyung's disappearance. He could only imagine her reaction if she found out about his feelings for the world's most dangerous criminal.

"Hyung, please. I'm not ready to marry yet. I don't think I ever will be. Just try to understand." Taehyung's voice wavered as he searched for excuses, but Seokjin wasn't convinced.

"Taehyung, at least consider giving someone else a chance in your life."

Before Taehyung could respond, his phone rang, interrupting their conversation. He pulled it out and saw his wife's name on the screen. Panic gripped him; he couldn't take the call in front of Seokjin.

"Who is it?" Jin's keen gaze was locked on him.

"It's just spam," Taehyung replied, silencing the call and slipping the phone back into his pocket.

"As I was saying, you should at least try—"

"I'll think about it, Hyung. Now please excuse me." Taehyung quickly retreated to his room.

"Tae, have your lunch!" Mrs. Kim shouted from downstairs.

"Not hungry, Mom! Just keep it aside; I'll eat later!" he called back, locking the door behind him.

Once inside, he pulled out his phone, which was vibrating incessantly.

6 missed calls from Sri.

His heart raced. What could be so urgent that she called him so many times? He dialed her number back, anxiety coiling tightly in his chest.

After a few rings, she finally picked up. He could hear her heavy breaths on the other side, each one laden with distress. The words she whispered in a broken voice shattered his world into a million pieces.

I updated sooner. 😅 Didn't want you to lose interest because of slow updates.
