Jean pulled up to the house and knocked on the door. He waited for a minute and still, there was no answer. He was about to knock again when he heard footsteps approaching the door.
By the time he heard the door unlocking his mind was filled with the worst possible outcome and he was shaking a bit, he didn't know what he would do what he would say. He never really had a clear mind under stressful circumstances.
When Levi opened the door he went to greet Jean. "Hey-," Levi was cut off.
Jean had acted based on instinct instead of any rational thought. Once he saw it was Levi at the door he had moved. His fist collided with Levi's face. More specifically his cheek directly below his eye. He swung hard and fast, but his punch wasn't as hard as it would have been if he used his other hand. He was forced to use his non-dominant hand since his dominant hand was broken from punching the other douchebag.
Levi stumbled back as the force of the punch surprised him. He brought his hand up to his face and placed it over his cheek looking up at Jean with a bewildered look. He stayed frozen for a second trying to understand just what was going through his head. When he heard Eren gasp from the other room his thoughts finally fell into place. He dropped the confused look and replaced it with a laugh.
It was Jean's turn to bear the confused face watching Levi laugh after being hit, he looked like an insane person until he finally spoke. "I see you've been talking to Eren," Levi finally said, "It seems there has been some sort of misunderstanding," he said with a smile.
"What the fuck Jean," Eren said finally finding his voice as he rounded the corner.
"But, you didn't, I thought, but," Jean stammered trying to ask multiple questions at once.
"Look, Jean," Levi started, "I realize that Eren probably told you everything and what he thought was happening, and you were trying to stand up for him. Don't get me wrong I appreciate you standing up for Eren," Levi said calmly with a smile. His smile disappeared and his the atmosphere got serious as his tone and facial expression changed as he stated his next thought. "But if you so much as raise your hand at me again I can assure you no one will find your body," Levi said.
Jean had almost forgotten how scary Levi actually was, this man wasn't all bark his bite was much worse. Even though his bark was enough to inflict pain and fear usually. Jean wouldn't wish Levi's wrath on his worst enemy.
Jean was visibly shaking, he was looking death in the face and it wasn't pretty. "I'm so sorry," Jean whispered out despite having no air left in his lungs.
"Jean," Eren said cutting in nudging Levi lightly to try and get his death glare away from Jean so that he wouldn't pass out. He looked as if he was afraid to breathe and he looked a little blue.
Levi moved out of the way and went back to the kitchen to get ice packs.
Eren invited Jean inside so he could give an explanation, but it seemed as if Jean was frozen his place and his feet nailed to the floor.
Eren suppressed his laugh as he pulled Jean inside.
Jean mumbled, "I could have died," looking to Eren almost asking if he could validate this claim.
"Nah, I wouldn't let him kill you," Eren laughed. "But what the hell are you doing punching him anyway?" Eren asked in a more serious tone.
"Yeah what they hell Jean?" Levi said with a slight smirk on his face getting Jean's attention.
Jean looked as if he was a deer caught in headlights. His head had whipped around to look at Levi who was behind him. Jean almost thought he was like a tiger stalking his prey. "I-" Jean stammered only to be caught off guard by Levi.
"Here," Levi said throwing Jean an ice pack. "That was one mean punch, it probably did a number on your hand," He said before sitting down next to Eren.
"Thanks," Jean managed to force out. "Sorry," he said again. He turned to Eren to explain. "When I got your text I was really worried and when you stopped replying I got scared when I called again this morning your phone was shut off and there was no new messages or calls and I got really worried." Jean explained, "I didn't know what to do I panicked and I punched Levi fearing that something bad had happened to you," Jean said giving his explanation, but he refused to look at Levi when he did.
"My message?" Eren asked he couldn't even remember what he had sent. "What did it say?" He asked trying to figure out what could have worried Jean so much to the point he would punch Levi.
"All the message said was not coming, Levi," Jean said pulling out his phone to show Eren.
Eren put his hand up to his face looking down he rubbed his temples a little before nodding. "I can see why that would cause concern and easily be misinterpreted," Eren said seeing it was his error.
"I thought he hurt you, or hell even killed you," Jean said before realizing Levi was still right there, "no offense, I was just scared." He quickly said to Levi."
"None taken," Levi shrugged, "I would have thought something similar if I received that message," he said before turning to Eren. "So it's technically your fault that I got punched," Levi said with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.
"Not even," Eren protested, "If you weren't all over me I would have been able to finish my message to Jean," Eren said stating the facts. "So technically it's your own fault you got punched," Eren said with an amused grin.
Levi couldn't argue with that so he shrugged and nodded.
"First off, TMI," Jean said with a disgusted look on his face, "second off, why was your phone off this morning?" He asked.
"Shit, I knew I forgot something," Eren mumbled "I forgot to charge my phone after throwing it aside last night. Actually, I think my phone is still upstairs on the floor," Eren said standing up and heading up the stairs leaving Jean and Levi alone.
"No hard feelings right?" Jean asked with shrug and a nervous forced laugh.
"No you'll pay for that," Levi said making Jean almost pass out before laughing. "I'm just kidding, yeah we're good," he said with a smile. "You know you're like family it's hard to stay mad about frivolous things when it comes to family," Levi said with a nod. "But seriously, next time ask first swing later, okay?" Levi said laughing.
"Will do," Jean said, he was a bit more relaxed but he felt a little guilty still.
"Also, I need to thank you," Levi said with a smile.
"Why?" Jean asked genuinely confused.
"I heard you punched one of the bastards that hurt Eren," Levi said, "I told him we should throw you a party," Levi smiled.
Jean laughed, "Punching him was reward enough."
"Looks like it did a number on your hand," Levi said pointing at the swollen bandage wrapped hand that Jean was babying. His other hand had started to bruise already but luckily wasn't broken which he was relieved about. He would still have to find a way to explain the bruise to Marco though.
"Same goes for you," Jean said pointing at Levi's hand which had looked worse than his, "Who did you fight?" He asked.
"A wall," Levi laughed," with a shrug.
Jean laughed at the thought of it. He was curious but before he could ask Eren had reappeared with his phone and charger in hand. He plugged it in and sat down waiting a few minutes before it turned back on. He saw as the missed messages started to appear on his screen. Missed calls showing up as well.
"Damn," Eren said, "Well, glad we got everything straightened out," Eren smiled.
"Not quite everything," Jean asked looking at Eren.
"Oh," Eren said before grinning, "Levi wasn't cheating," Eren said before lifting up his hand showing Jean the ring followed by an explanation.
After everything was settled they all laughed at how stupid they all were. Jean for almost committing suicide by stupidly punching Levi in the face without knowing all the facts. Eren for not communicating and just assuming. Levi for being so scared of rejection he forgot to watch the signs telling him if Eren was hurting or not.
"Okay," Jean finally said, "What's up with the apron?" He asked looking it up and down.
Eren looked down and realized he was still wearing the damn thing. He huffed and pulled it off throwing it at Levi who was laughing. He shot a mean glare at his fiance and couldn't help but shake his head.
Jean laughed for a second before stopping abruptly. He had never witnessed Eren without a shirt on, or without long sleeves. Not since that day at the hospital. He saw the scars that littered his friend's arms that went from his wrists all the way up to the start of his shoulders. He saw the scars on his stomach that didn't look like they were self-inflicted. He saw the burn marks that were probably made by those three assholes and his father.
Jean tore his eyes away not wanting to bring Eren's attention back to these unwanted reminders. He took a mental breath and acted like nothing ever happened. By the time Eren looked back at him from glaring at Levi it looked like nothing had happened.
Levi invited Jean to stay for breakfast to which he agreed Levi made breakfast as Eren attempted to help but mostly just stood there. They were setting the plates down and sitting down to eat when Eren had finally realized he didn't have a shirt on and all his scars were visible. He looked up panicked at Jean who was too busy eating and then to Levi who gave him a confused look.
"Sorry, I'll be right back," Eren said quickly getting up from the table and running up the stairs with tears in his eyes.
Levi stood up and was about to run after him already realizing what this was about, but he decided against it, he needed some time to breathe.
Jean, however, stood up as well, "what's wrong?" He asked Levi who had already started to sit back down.
"He's self-conscious," Levi said plainly. "Thank you for not saying anything, you know back in the living room when you finally noticed," Levi said.
Jean realized that Levi had seen Jean's expression.
"Of course," Jean said with a nod, "The last thing he needs is me bringing up unnecessary shit."
Eren had run up the stairs and grabbed his jacket off the floor where he had thrown it the night before. He quickly put it on ashamed that he was stupid enough to let Jean see. Then again, Jean didn't seem to mind. He didn't make a big deal out of it, he didn't point it out, or make fun of him for it.
Eren wiped his eyes and smiled. "He really is a good friend," He whispered. He didn't feel so ashamed of his body and he actually debated taking off the jacket, but just shook his head leaving the jacket on. He made his way back down the stairs and he resumed his place at the table.
"Sorry for running off like that," he said, "I um got cold," he said trying to cover what he really wanted to say. The other two just nodded already knowing his reasoning and they continued with their breakfast.
Over breakfast, Eren realized that Jean still hadn't gone to the emergency room to get his hand checked out. "That's it," Eren finally said causing both of them men to look up at him, "After breakfast, I am taking both of you down to the ER and you are getting your hands checked out," Eren said scolding them for not taking better care of themselves.
They both tried to protest only to be silenced by Eren who swore he insisted. They reluctantly agreed.
