Making Friends
Eren held onto Levi and whispered in his ear some sweet comforting words that managed to calm him down. Hanji had done what she could from where she sat. The two siblings had given him his privacy and pretended not to notice, but kept a concerned watching eye from where they sat.
Thomas had figured out one of the teachers' secrets and now everything had made sense. 'They are gay, I get that, but there is something else I am missing. There is more to them.' Thomas thought watching closely to make sure he could see every detail, even though Hanji was obstructing his view.
He'd be lying if he said he didn't feel sorry for Mr. Rivaille, he was obviously dealing with something that was unknown to anyone else. 'Could that be why he was being mean, not just to me but just in general, was he taking out his frustrations on people because something was wrong with him? Well I mean if anyone knows something about that it would be me.' Thomas thought before realizing he had gotten off track in his own thoughts and slightly shaking his head to try and clear it.
In doing so his eyes landed back on TJ and his sister. They had frozen in place where they were. Alex still holding strands of his hair where she was braiding it. They both were trying to act normal but failing as concern was painted all over their faces.
Levi bit back his emotions and took a deep breath. He looked at Eren and then at Hanji and mouthed and apologetic thank you to them. Hanji nodded and patted his head being careful not to mess up Levi's hair. Eren, on the other hand, placed a small kiss on Levi's cheek knowing that Hanji was blocking the students' view. Levi sat up and wiped his face hoping to rid any trace of the previous emotions.
When Levi looked better he nodded at Hanji telling her it was okay to move back to her seat when she wanted.
Hanji slid off of Levi's desk and sat back down where she was originally sitting before the situation happened. She was still unsure of what was happening or what had caused the sudden break in Levi's bottle of emotions, but she was determined to take care of him regardless.
Levi had fully sat up and had looked at Thomas first to make sure he hadn't witnessed any of that. Levi saw TJ looking at his phone and his headphones in and he let out a mental sigh of relief thinking he was in the clear. Next, he looked at TJ and Alex and met their worried eyes. The teenagers immediately averted their gaze and tried to pretend they weren't just caught staring.
"TJ, Alex?" Levi said softly walking over to them and sitting in a chair next to them.
They looked up from where they were staring at the floor, their heads lowered.
"Sorry if I worried you two." Levi apologized to the two students who showed that they cared about him just by the looks they had on their faces.
They looked at him and Alex asked him, "Are you okay? What was wrong?"
Levi nodded, "I'm okay now, it was just a bad thought that's all," he said trying to clear their worry away.
"I understand," said TJ, "I get them too," he said in a quiet tone. "Do you need a hug, would that help a little?" TJ asked knowing that when he gets those bad thoughts his sister's hugs make him feel a little better.
Thomas was staring at TJ after hearing his statement he. He knew that his comment earlier had probably hurt him and even caused him some of those bad thoughts he was referencing. 'Why did I say that to him anyways? I don't want to hurt him, so why did I purposely say something that I knew would hurt him?' Thomas let out an inaudible sigh before tuning back into reality.
"Well let's see," Levi said accepting the hug. Both TJ and Alex got up and gave him a tight hug. When they let him go he was smiling. "You're right, it did help, thank you." He said patting their heads.
Thomas let a smile slip as he watched Levi interact with TJ and Alex. When he realized he bit his cheek to stop from smiling. He didn't know why he wanted to smile at such an act, but he couldn't help it seeing the cute sight.
Levi eventually returned to his desk with Eren practically clinging to his side to make sure he was really doing better.
TJ took a breath and decided to do something totally out of his comfort zone. He stood up and walked over to Thomas.
Thomas stared at the boy, who he was now face to face with, wide-eyed and impressed.
"I was um, I was wondering if you would like to sit with us?" TJ said stuttering as he spoke softly. 'He doesn't seem to have any friends yet, maybe he would like to join us.' He had thought before looking at his sister and asking her with his eyes. She nodded with a smile and that's when he got up.
Thomas sat there jaw slightly ajar unable to form words. 'Turn his offer down, insult him.' His brain was yelling at him, but another part of him was saying, 'I don't want to do that, I want to go over there with him.'
TJ waited patiently avoiding eye contact and fidgeting nervously with his thumbs. He had to hold back his anxiety trying to breathe normally as the pressure in his chest rose.
Thomas unable to get the words out just nodded and involuntarily gave TJ a nervous smile.
TJ smiled back and watched as Thomas grabbed his stuff and moved up to the front of the class with him.
Levi had stared at them in awe as TJ had just gone way out of his comfort zone to try and make sure Thomas had a place to sit and people to sit with even though he was so mean to him earlier.
When Thomas sat down next to TJ he stuttered to get his next sentence out. "About before, um earlier I, um what I mean to say," Thomas took a deep breath organizing his scrambled thoughts a little more before attempting to get his words out again. "I'm sorry, for what I said earlier. I don't know why I said it, but I shouldn't have." He said looking down in shame.
"Apology accepted," TJ said kindly with a small smile, knowing this one was sincere.
Alex gave him a look almost to say 'What the hell did you say to him' but kept her mouth silent knowing if TJ didn't tell her what had happened it wasn't that important and didn't seem to have a huge affect on him.
The last half of lunch seemed to pass rather quickly. TJ, Alex, and Thomas had introduced themselves correctly and shared little things to try and get to know each other better. Thomas was surprised by how much stuff he had in common with TJ, 'I guess you really can't judge a book by its cover,' he thought actually having a good time.
Levi had kept a close eye on the three to make sure Thomas didn't step over the line again, but he also stayed engaged in his own conversation with the other two teachers. He thought he judged the kid to fast and that he would give him another chance, 'I mean how bad can he be TJ and Alex seem to like him,' he thought.
