Just Visiting

"It's Grisha Jaeger," the nurse said, "he said he wants to see you."

Mikasa's demeanor changed and instead of worried and scared she was livid. "I'm sorry, but my father knows how I feel about him," Mikasa slightly raised her voice and she was about to hang up when Eren stopped her.

"At least see what he wants," Eren quickly said feeling a little sorry for him.

"No," Mikasa argued looking at him almost baffled.

"I know he's a shitty person, but-," Eren said, his voice mellow. Mikasa cut him off abruptly.

"I don't care about him, and neither should you," she said raising her voice a little before seeing Eren wince at the volume level. She mumbled an apology. "After all the shit he had put you through you should leave him to rot by himself," Mikasa mumbled, but when Eren kept his eyes determined she gave up. "Fine," she handed him the phone, "but I refuse to see him," she said and with that, she stormed off.

Eren took a deep breath and put the phone to his ear. "Hello?" Eren said, "I'm Eren Jaeger, Grisha's son, what does my father want?" He asked keeping his tone neutral.

"Grisha would like to see Mikasa Jaeger," the nurse repeated to Eren.

"Can you give me his room number, I'll try to relay the message when she calms down," Eren said.

The nurse paused for a minute. "Room 392 at Garrison Hospital," she read off the room number.

"Why is he in there?" He asked a little curious.

"He suddenly collapsed and upon entry at the hospital we have concluded that he has severe liver failure," the nurse told him, she sounded as if she was reading off his file.

'Looks like all those year's of heavy drinking finally caught up to him,' Eren thought. "What are his chances?" Eren asked.

"It doesn't look good," she said.

"He's dying?" Eren asked.

"At best, three months left, at worst a month," the nurse sighed giving him the bad news.

"What about a liver transplant?" Eren asked dropping his guard sounding a little more vulnerable.

"He's not eligible," the nurse said with a small apology.

"What time do visiting hours end?" Eren asked as a final question.

"Visiting hours are from 10 am to 9 pm," the nurse said.

"Thank you," Eren said before they both hung up.

"Everything okay hun?" Levi asked walking up to Eren.

"Everything's fine," Eren sighed unconvincingly.

"What's wrong," Levi asked taking Eren's hand in his and leading him to the couch so they could talk.

"Mikasa didn't tell you?" Eren asked.

"No, she just sat down with an attitude. When I asked her what's wrong she told me to talk to you," Levi shrugged, "so what's up?"

"Would you mind watching the kids for a while?" Eren asked looking up at Levi with his mind made up.

"Um, sure," Levi hesitated, "are you at least going to tell me where you're going?" Levi asked as he watched Eren handed him Mikasa's phone before standing up.

"The hospital," Eren answered putting on his shoes.

"The hospital," Levi asked with more concern in his voice, "Why are you going to the hospital?" Levi asked his voice raised a little with worry.

"Just visiting," Eren said grabbing his keys.

"Who?" Levi asked.

Eren opened the door and paused. He turned his head around looking back at Levi. "My dad," he said before turning and leaving without another word.

Levi stood there for a second processing what Eren had said before he ran after him. Eren was already in the car and was about to back out of the driveway when Levi ran up to the car knocking at the window. Eren rolled the window down so Levi could talk.

"What the hell Eren?" Levi asked.

"Look, I know I shouldn't care about him, and I know you are going to say the same thing as Mikasa, but he's dying and I've made up my mind. I am going to see him regardless," Eren said looking at Levi.

Levi looked into Eren's eyes, and the look they held said it all. "I wasn't going to say anything like that," Levi said a bit calmer now. "I just want to make sure you're doing okay," Levi said before taking his hand and pushing some of Eren's hair behind his ear. "If this brings back all those terrible memories I want you to talk to me okay? You aren't going to shut me out again?" Levi asked.

"I won't. If I need help this time I'll be sure to ask," Eren said with a nod.

Levi cupped Eren's face in his hands, the cast being awkward, but Eren could care less. "I love you remember that," Levi said before placing a kiss on Eren's lips.

"I love you too," Eren said when they separated from the kiss. "Oh, and don't worry," he smiled, "I'll be back for dinner."

"You better be," Levi smiled playfully. Levi backed up and watched as Eren pulled out of the driveway. When the car was out of sight Levi walked back in the house.

Mikasa was standing in the living room with her arms folded. A little ways behind her were the kids whose curiosity got the best of them. They were doing a horrible job of hiding as they tried to eavesdrop. "Where'd Eren go?" She asked angrily knowing the answer.

"The hospital," Levi said standing his ground.

"Why didn't you stop him," Mikasa said raising her voice, "you, of all people, should know why this would be a bad idea," Mikasa said pointing at Levi. "Why did you let him go to see that douchebag," she asked.

"He was going to go one way or the other," Levi said with a shrug, "besides I don't control his life, he is an adult and he can do whatever he pleases."

"You could have talked him out of it," she said angrier than before.

"Mikasa, Eren had already set his mind to it there was no talking him out of it," Levi said, "besides you didn't see the look on his face," Levi said with a softer tone, "trust me he'll be okay," Levi reassure her. He held her phone out for her to take.

"He better be," Mikasa grumbled grabbing her phone back from Levi's hand. "If not I'm coming after you," she mumbled. "I should probably get going," Mikasa said checking the time. "It's already 4:18 pm, I told Armin I'd grab a bite with him at 4:30," she sighed. "I'm going to be late. Thanks anyway for having me," Mikasa said and Levi offered to walk her out looking at the kids and gesturing at them to help walk her out.

They all walked her out to her car that was parked out on the street. Levi gave her a hug and all the kids waved her goodbye. Mikasa got in the car and rolled down the window. "Watch out for him," Mikasa said more seriously.

"I will," Levi promised.

Mikasa nodded and drove off, this time with her jacket.

Eren checked in at the front desk and checked the time as he walked down the hall. '4:37 pm, that means I have to leave here by 7:30 latest,' Eren thought to himself.

He walked down the hall and read the room numbers before stopping in front of room 392. He took a deep breath and walked into the room. His dad was wide awake and looked up at him.

"What are you doing here," his father asked with a bit of anger in his voice. "I clearly said I wanted to see Mikasa, and only Mikasa," he said glaring at Eren.

"Mikasa's not coming," Eren said. "It's me or no one," Eren said showing him no weakness and standing his ground.

"Then leave," his father said turning his head away.

"Fine, but if I leave then I won't be coming back," Eren said standing in the doorway still.

"Good," his father huffed, "I don't need you," he spat.

"That's fine. I'll leave, but first, you are going to listen to what I came here to say," Eren stood tall and stared down at his father with eyes that burned into him despite his head being turned the opposite way. "You ruined my whole childhood. You abused me, you let your friends rape me, you almost killed me, and despite all this, I still came to stay with you knowing that you are dying. I am willing to overlook all the pain you caused me because I believe no one deserves to die alone. Now if you are still too prideful to accept my gesture then I will gladly leave you to rot here like Mikasa told me to," Eren said. He waited a moment and when he heard no response he said, "should have known you would never change," he started heading towards the door.

"Eren wait," his father said turning back over in the bed he looked at him and when his eyes met Eren's they sank to the floor. "Can you stay?" He asked with a shaky and shameful voice.

"I'll stay, but we are going to talk," Eren said looking at his father seeing if that was okay because if it wasn't he would keep walking.

"Okay," Grisha nodded accepting that condition.

Eren nodded and walked back into the room taking a seat in the chair by his father's bedside. "Okay then, let's talk," Eren said.
