Grief Counseling
The car ride was quiet and Eren kept his head fixated towards the window hoping that the scenery would distract him from his thoughts. His hand was in Levi's while he drove. Every once in a while Eren's grip would tighten slightly, and Levi knew an unwelcome thought had popped into his head, but as quickly as they came they left when Levi squeeze his hand back.
When they got to Ash's place Eren said that he would stay in the car while Levi went to get them. He got out of the car and went to get the kids. When the three of them came back they got in the car and started heading home.
The kids could tell something was wrong. Eren was quiet, to quiet for everything to be okay. Levi was doing all the talking. He was the one who asked them if they had fun, usually, Eren asked them that. They started to wonder if the two of them had gotten into a fight until TJ noticed that they were holding hands. He looked at his sister to see if she had noticed the weird feeling, but she was already looking at him. She gave him a nod and they both sat there silently trying to figure out what had happened while they were gone.
When they got home it was eerily quiet. There was no music playing in the house, no wedding planning, no talking over the phones, or at all for that matter. Rather Eren had gone up to bed and Levi was sitting in the living room staring at his open book. He wasn't reading it, he was just staring at it, he hadn't turned the page in over 10 minutes and the kids knew he was thinking about something.
Eren had insisted on going upstairs alone. He sat on the bed with his knees pulled close to his chest as he hugged the little-stuffed panda bear to try and get some comfort. He knew he should probably get Levi since his company seemed to help, but he couldn't burden him with all his feelings.
Instead, he picked up his phone and sent a quick text message. First one to Mikasa to tell her what had happened to their dad, and then the next to another number. He didn't know what he was expecting for texting him, but he just felt the need to. Maybe he was hoping that his reply would bring him some comfort, even though it was highly unlikely.
The first reply was from Mikasa and it was just an apology, "I'm sorry Eren, I know you two were just starting to get along," her message said. He clicked off his phone.
"Getting along," he mumbled to himself, "that's an understatement," Eren huffed. He didn't know what she would say, it's not like she actually gave a rat's ass if he died anyway. Sure she met him, she saw the change in him, but unlike Eren, she couldn't get past the things he did. She had held onto her anger, and she had every right to not care about his death. Eren was just glad she at least acted like she cared even if it was just for his sake.
The phone lit up one more time when Eren read it he saw that it was from the other number, and all it said was "10 minutes."
Eren reread the message confused before just assuming he must have been busy at the moment. There was a knock at the bedroom door and Eren's attention changed from staring at the floor to staring at the door.
"Just wanted to see how you're doing, and if you wanted any company," Levi said cracking open the door peeking his head in giving Eren a little smile.
Eren nodded and watched as Levi came into the room and sat down on the bed next to him. Eren immediately leaned his head on Levi's shoulder with a sigh. He was all cried out, and all he felt was just emptiness. There was a pit in his stomach and a tight pain in his chest. They sat there for a few minutes in silence until Eren finaly said something. "I think I preferred the crying," Eren said with a sarcastic laugh, "the empty feeling is much more painful," he sighed.
Levi just rubbed his back. "I'm sorry hun. It won't last forever," he said placing a kiss on his forehead.
"I know, but I just wish time passed quicker," he shrugged.
"Should we move back the wedding?" Levi asked holding his breath, he wanted to give Eren enough time to grieve, but he didn't really want to move it back.
"No no, you're not getting out of this that easily," Eren said with a little smile, "don't tell me you're getting cold feet," Eren joked.
"Nah," my feet are as warm as the depths of hell from which I came," Levi smiled.
Eren busted into laughter at Levi's unexpected comment. "Well since you actually came from heaven I don't know what to make of that comment," Eren smiled before placing a kiss on Levi's cheek. "You're my angel."
"I think you meant to say fallen angel," Levi smiled, "the only angel I see is you," he said sitting up and looking at Eren "I mean hell you even have the heavenly glow," Levi smiled pointing at him.
"That's my aura of despair, but nice try," Eren laughed.
Levi just laughed and was glad that Eren was now able to joke around and that he seemed a little more relaxed, even if it was only for the time being. They heard a small knock come from what they assumed was the front door.
"I'll get it," they heard Alex say.
"I'm going to go check and see who it is," Levi said a little concerned about Alex opening the door.
"You're being overprotective again," Eren warned him seeing how quickly he jumped up to make sure the kids were okay.
"I think I am being the right amount of protective," Levi said before heading out of the room.
When he got to the bottom of the stairs he saw a face he wasn't expecting. "Hey Jean," Levi said walking up to him. "What are you doing here?" He asked as Alex had walked back into the dining room where her brother was sitting.
"I got Eren's text, and I wanted to make sure he was okay," Jean said he seemed worried.
"What did he text you?" Levi asked.
"In summary, his dad died and he is really torn up about it," Jean said opening his messages to show Levi.
"Oh," Levi said handing the phone back to Jean when he was done reading it, "well he's doing okay, not great, but not horrible," Levi shrugged.
"I just wanted to try and cheer him up a little," Jean said and Levi pointed up the stairs.
"He's in our room," Levi said stepping out of his way. He knew Jean, being Eren's best friend, was going to try anything and everything he could to try and help.
Jean went up the stairs and knocked on the bedroom door before poking his head inside, "Eren?" he asked.
"Oh, so that's what you meant by 10 minutes," Eren said surprised to see him.
"Yup," Jean smiled coming into the room, "I couldn't let you grieve alone. Well, I mean I know you have Levi, but I figured I could help too," Jean shrugged.
"Thank's Jean," Eren said giving him a little smile.
"So I know I'm not good with emotions, but I will do everything in my power to help turn your frown upside down," Jean said with a smiled as he sat down next to Eren on the bed.
"God, you sound like a grief counselor," Eren rolled his eyes.
"Well shit you know my secret identity," Jean said sarcastically.
"As if," Eren scoffed, "you'd be about as good at grief counseling as I am at cooking," Eren laughed.
"So I'd crash and burn before even starting?" Jean asked.
"Bingo," Eren said with a nod.
