"TJ, Alex," he said as he approached them.
"Dad," TJ said plainly. He wasn't sure how he felt about seeing him. He knew it wasn't his fault he got kicked out, and he knew he tried his hardest to help him earlier, but the person in front of him might as well be a complete stranger. TJ swore he knew Eren and Levi more than he knew his own father, he was lucky if he got to see him once a week at best.
"Peter," Alex said venomously. All she saw was him betray TJ. She hadn't seen him stand up for him. She didn't care if this was her father all she knew was that he betrayed TJ.
Levi had stayed in front of Alex not really knowing the situation. All he and Eren knew were that the kids felt uncomfortable. They stayed alert in case they had to jump between the kids and their father. Eren had moved so that he was standing closer to TJ just as a precaution.
Peter dropped his head and let his eyes fall to the floor. "I know that you both probably hate me," he started with, "and I don't blame you if you do. I want you to know that I left your mother. The way she treated you guys, I just couldn't stand it anymore," He looked up slightly still keeping his head lower than normal. "I know I've been a shitty dad, but I really and truly want to make it up to you both, I want to try to be a better father, that is if you will let me," he said looking at the both of them nervously.
"Why should we," Alex said stepping out from behind Levi, "you didn't even try to protect TJ from mom," she said raising her voice at him before TJ grabbed her arm.
"Actually he did," he said with a look that said I'll tell you the rest later.
"Fine, but still, one out of a hundred times doesn't make a difference," she said folding her arms.
"I know," he said closing his eyes and taking a breath, "I'm not going to make any excuses I was really terrible, and I should have stepped in instead of just hiding at work," he said, "but I really do want to try and do better," he said looking at TJ wanting to know what he was thinking.
TJ sighed and stepped forward, "Actually," he said looking at his father, "I would like that," he said.
"Really," he asked with a stutter and his eyes widened with joy.
"But honestly I don't think I can live with you," he said, "I don't know anything about you, and I wouldn't feel comfortable living with you," he admitted.
"I understand," he said lowering his head a little, but he still was happy that his son agreed to stay in contact. "As long as you have a safe place to stay I guess I can't argue with that," he said with a small smile.
"We do have a safe place to stay, but I left my phone at the house, so would you mind writing down your number so I can call you?" TJ asked and Peter nodded. He wrote down the number and handed it to him.
"Oh," he said remembering. "Before I left I managed to get your guys' clothes," he said opening the trunk and taking out two the two suitcases that had their clothes in them. "You're probably going to need them," he said handing them over to them.
"Thank you," TJ said surprised. Alex just stared at him, she didn't know how to feel at this point. She wanted to hate him for handing over TJ, but at the same time he was making it so hard, whatever TJ had to tell her about what happened earlier she was hoping it would clear up her mixed feelings.
After a little more talking the dad left and told them that he was going to be staying at a motel nearby while he looked for an apartment. When he left Levi and Eren turned to the kids and instead of asking what just happened they just asked, "are you ready to head home?"
The kids nodded and they all got in the car. They headed to the house. The car ride was excruciatingly quiet. The kids still looked as if they were going to collapse from exhaustion at any moment. They seemed to have warmed up by now and they were still wearing the jackets that were loaned to them. When they pulled into the driveway of the house the surprised look on their face was evident. Eren just laughed thinking 'that's what my face must have looked like seeing the house for the first time.'
They all got out of the car and walked up to the front door. Eren unlocked it and Levi set the stuff down for the lesson he was planning, 'guess I'll have to do it next week,' he thought setting it aside.
Alex and TJ had given the jackets back to them after remembering they were still wearing them.
While Levi was putting the stuff away Eren and grabbed the kids suitcases and lead them up to the spare bedroom. He set the suitcases in the room and lead them inside. They marveled at how big the bed was. "This bed is so big we won't even be near each other despite sharing a bed," Alex said surprised.
Eren laughed, "Make yourselves at home, the bathroom is the next door down, and if you're hungry Levi can make you something," Eren offered with a smile.
They thanked him and asked if they could shower to get the dirt from sleeping in the park all night, off of them.
"Of course you can," he said with a smile before leaving to help Levi put stuff away, he could hear him dropping stuff and cursing from up the stairs.
They took turns showering and when they both were showered they had passed out on the bed. Despite the bed being so big they decided to sleep right next to each other. They just needed the comfort of the other right there next to them to remind themselves that they were safe.
Eren and Levi had done some quiet work around the house while the two slept. Levi had finished grading some homework while Eren had painted another painting. It was around lunchtime at the school and Eren had gotten a call from Hanji. She had talked to Thomas and told him as much as she could and he really wanted to talk to TJ, but he wasn't answering Hanji explained.
Eren told them that they were sleeping, but that he would have TJ call Thomas back after school if Thomas left his number. After Thomas left his number and hung up Eren wrote it down on a notepad and left it on the counter so he would remember. After a couple more hours TJ had woken up to see that Alex was sitting up reading a book she had in her backpack.
"How long have you been awake," TJ asked rubbing his eyes.
"Not long," she said closing her book.
"I didn't want to wake you, but I also didn't want to go downstairs without you," she said a little nervously.
"Aren't you hungry?" TJ asked and Alex nodded back. "Me too," he said, "let's go downstairs together," he suggested.
They slowly made their way down the stairs. They saw some movement in the kitchen and walked a little closer to try and see better. Eren and Levi were in the kitchen cooking something.
Levi seemed to be doing most of the cooking while Eren was just handing him stuff. Levi put the lid on and said, "okay," should be ready in ten minutes," he smiled.
Eren had scooted over behind Levi and leaned his chin on Levi's shoulder. "Smells delicious already," Eren said placing a kiss on Levi's cheek.
"Je connais," (I know) Levi said proudly with a smile.
Eren just laughed a little before letting go of Levi and shaking his head. He turned around to go and set the table and noticed the kids standing shyly in the living room. "Oh hey," he said with a smile, "the food will be ready in a few minutes," he said also telling them what Levi was making "If you don't like it we have a bunch of other options in the fridge," he offered.
"It's okay," Alex said, "it sounds good and don't worry we aren't very picky eaters," she smiled.
