Blasts from the Past

"You found him," Jean said with a smile, "is there anything I can help you with?" He asked with a kind smile.

She walked in her eyes were teary and behind her trailed in a little girl who looked confused about what was going on.

"I came here to apologize," she said in a shaky voice.

Marco got up and walked out of the room excusing himself knowing they would probably need a minute to themselves to work things out he waited in the hallway listening in in case Jean needed him.

"Apologize for what?" Jean said sitting up as much as he could wincing while he did.

"You could have died today because of my husband," the lady said which made Jean's eyes widen in realization, "I should have insisted he take his medication but instead I let him brush it off and for that, I am truly sorry," she said.

Jean stared at her speechless for a moment before finding some words. "You don't have to apologize to me," Jean said, "I was going to see if I could track you down to be able to apologize to you both. It's my fault he's dead if I would have paid more attention I could have swerved out of the way," Jean said looking down.

The woman walked up to him and gently put a hand on Jean's shoulder being sure not to hurt him. "You have a good heart," she said with a sad smile, "but please don't blame yourself it wasn't your fault," she assured him. "If anything I should have made sure that he took them before heading to work, but I was too busy heading out to take my daughter to get ice cream that I didn't even notice that he left without them," She said looking down to the ground lip quivering.

"Hey, don't you go blaming yourself either," Jean said putting a hand on hers. "I was just one of those things that no one could have seen coming," Jean said trying to comfort her.

"I guess you're right," she said trying to stop her crying to be strong for the little girl who had already figured out daddy wasn't coming home.

"Mommy," she asked as realization finally began to sink in.

"Yes, Audrey?" The mom said turning around and kneeling down wiping her own eyes and giving her daughter a forced smile.

"Is it my fault that daddy won't be coming home?" She asked.

"No of course not baby, why would you say that?" She asked concerned.

"If I didn't want ice cream that badly then you could have been there to tell dad to take his medicine," she said looking towards the ground.

'Audrey," Jean asked himself, 'ice cream,' he thought. It finally clicked from what Eren and Levi had told him earlier that they meet this little girl named Audrey at the ice cream place. He thought this was just a coincidence... right, this couldn't be the same girl.

"No, baby, that's not true, it's not your fault at all," the mother assured her daughter.

"Audrey?" Jean said calmly getting the little girl's attention.

She looked up at him with sad eyes as did the mother.

"I want you to know that none of this is your fault, okay?" Jean asked, "Tell me that you understand," he asked calmly.

"I understand," she nodded reluctantly.

"You made some new friends earlier right?" Jean asked trying to confirm his suspicions. "Eren and Levi," he asked.

"Yeah, they were really nice," she smiled, "how did you know?" she asked walking over to the said of the bed and sitting down on it to listen to what he had to say.

Her mother was asking the same question with a confused and skeptical look.

"Well, I'm friends with them too. I was at the park earlier and they told me about this amazing little girl who was so nice to them and stood up for them. If I could just remember that girls name, Ammy? No, Ashely? No." He asked pretending that the name had slipped his mind.

"Was it Audrey?" The little girl asked happily.

"Yup, that was it," Jean said giving her a smile. "You see Audrey, you were supposed to be at that park to protect those two from the mean lady," Jean said with a nice smile.

"Yeah, I guess I was," she said nodding her head. "I guess God planned it that way," she said. "Mommy," she said looking at her mom, "I think it was daddy's time to go," she said with a sad look, "God needed him in heaven," she said.

The mom started to cry a little, "I guess you're right baby," she said with a shaky voice.

"You want to know something about your friends that you meet earlier?" Jean asked hoping that talking about some of the things they went through would help her get through the grief she was feeling.

Audrey nodded and crossed her legs resting her chin on her hand.

"They have both been through the exact same situation, more than once," Jean said and Audrey looked up with more interest her mom took a seat wanting to listen to what Jean had to say as well.

"Who did they lose?" She asked.

"Well, Levi lost a bunch of his friends and Eren lost his mom," He told her.

"Really?" She asked, "Did they have trouble hiding their sadness?" She asked looking down.

"Yes, and do you want to know why?" He said thrown off by that question that was odd for a 6-year-old.

"Why?" She asked.

"It's because you aren't supposed to hide it," Jean said. "It's okay to cry, it's okay to be sad and it's okay to miss them there's no need to hide it," Jean said and the little girl nodded.

"Mommy, did you hear that," she asked looking towards her mom. "It's okay to be sad. You don't have to hide your tears anymore," She told her and the mom had a hard time keeping her tears hidden after that.

After Jean talked to the little girl she ended up falling asleep on the bed next to him. Her mother had been sitting there crying and Jean was rubbing her back as he talked to the little girl distracting her so the mother could have time to grieve and process everything.

After Audrey fell asleep next to Jean the mom had started collecting herself and wiping away her tears. She apologized but Jean told her it was okay he didn't mind. She told him her name since she realized she never introduced herself properly.

"Was what you said earlier true?" She asked. "About them losing people?"

"Mhm," Jean nodded.

"How did they lose them?" She asked a little curious.

"Well, Eren lost his mother back in sixth grade when the school building collapsed. I wish I could say it killed her instantly, but that wasn't the case. They were trapped in their for hours before the fire department finally dug them out, Eren's mom died only a little before they could get to them," Jean said with a saddened tone. She was a nice woman and she didn't deserve to go like that." Jean said remembering how nice she was whenever he and Eren used to hang out all those years ago before Eren had shut him out.

"Oh, that's terrible," she said just imagining how much baggage must be on Eren's shoulders since that day.

"Levi's friends," Jean started before pausing, " I don't know exactly how they want or all the details, and that's probably for the best. It's not something he talks about much. I just know it wasn't pleasant. I should start by saying Levi and all of his friends were soldiers. They were all tortured while Levi had to watch as they killed his friends off one by one in horrific ways." Jean said with a low tone like it was too gruesome even to speak of.

Lila's eyes widened, " Oh my that's awful," she said. "When I meet them earlier they were all smiles, I never would have known," She said surprised.

" We have another friend named Molbit," who went through a similar situation about four years ago.

"What happened to him?" She asked.

"He lost his wife to cancer and then within the same year his daughter was pronounced brain dead after a drunk driver hit her." He explained.

Lila looked down at her daughter running a hand over her head, "that's unimaginable," she whispered. "I would rather die than lose my daughter," she said.

"He thought the same thing," Jean whispered causing Lila to look back up at him.

"Levi met him in the hospital, while he was visiting a friend, for the first time the day he pulled the plug on his daughter's life support. Then the next time he met him was a few days later when Eren was brought into the hospital. Levi found out the guy had tried to kill himself," Jean told her. "Levi saved his life that day and he checks up on him weekly if he doesn't hear from him," Jean said he had only met Molbit a few times but he seemed like a nice guy.

"I'm glad to hear he's doing okay," she smiled. She liked listening to all of these stories because it pulled her away from the cold reality for a moment. "Wait Eren was in the hospital, what for?" She asked a little concerned.

"His dad was a cunt," Jean mumbled. "He was a terrible human being who took pleasure in hurting Eren and letting his friends get away with doing terrible things to him," Jean said with pure hatred.

Lila sat there shocked. "Eren was abused?" She asked just to make sure if she heard him correctly.

Jean nodded. He cleared his head getting rid of the sudden anger that rushed him from just thinking about Eren's father.

Marco who had been standing in the doorway since practically the beginning entered the room again. "Jean, Eren is co-" Marco went to say before Eren poked his head in the room.

"Hey Jean, did I leave my phone in-" Eren stopped looking around the room confused, "here," he finished his sentence.
