Back to School Night
Eren lead TJ to Hanji's classroom he unlocked it and they slipped inside. Eren left a piece of blank paper on the door window as a warning to Erwin that people were inside, don't bring Evelyn in there. It also worked as a cover so people couldn't see in the room. When he finished he closed and relocked the door.
TJ sat down at a desk putting his head down resting his bright red cheeks on the cool surface of the table. Eren walked over and sat in the chair next to him. He rubbed TJ's back for a second when he heard sniffling coming from the boy.
TJ sat up a few minutes later and looked up at Eren through his now messy hair. Eren could only see part of his face but he could tell his cheeks were bright red and his eyes were bloodshot and swollen from crying and him rubbing them.
"Sorry," he whispered.
"You don't have to apologize," Eren said turning his chair so that he was facing him.
He looked down saying, "today of all days I decided to have a mental breakdown," he sighed talking to himself.
"I don't think that's something you decide," Eren said with a comforting tone, "it's just something that happens." Eren placed his hand on his shoulder getting TJ to look back at him. "What do you want to talk about?" Eren asked not really knowing how to start the conversation.
"I don't know," he said not even knowing how to explain what was wrong anymore. "I don't really have anything more to say," he said with a shrug, "I just want to forget for now," he whispered. "But if I figure out what's wrong I'll tell you okay," he said looking back up at Eren.
"Okay fair enough," he said giving him a smile. "You have my number so anytime you need anything just go ahead and shoot me a text okay? I don't care if it's the middle of the day, the middle of the night, hell even the middle of class I'll reply, or pull you out of class and we'll talk," Eren said.
"I will," TJ said giving Eren a grateful smile. He leaned forward and threw his arms around him. Eren hugged him back and let him hold on to him as long as he needed. He just sat there shaking in Eren's arms.
Eren couldn't help but see just how much TJ's mom was breaking him. She was the cause of her own son's breakdown, and she probably wouldn't even care. Hell if she knew she would probably yell at him for crying. Eren just ran his fingers through TJ's hair sitting with him for several minutes until he finally sat up and wiped at his eyes and nodded deciding he was ready to head back.
"We should probably fix your hair and your face, I know just the thing to get most of the redness away," Eren suggested and TJ agreed. Eren lead him back to the bathroom and put some wet cool paper towels on his face and watched as the redness faded away after a few minutes. They made their way back to the class.
Eren poked his head in the room and when he saw that everyone was still in there, but Evelyn and Erwin were nowhere to be seen. He sighed in relief and made eye contact with Levi. He gestured to Levi to bring TJ's bag out in the hall and Levi did just that. Levi met them in the hallway handing the bag to TJ. TJ thanked him and Levi just patted his head knowing that something was wrong, but he didn't want to bring it back up.
"Let me know if you need anything else," he said before heading back into the room full of blank stares from everyone.
"What?" He asked in a certain tone and everyone went back to doing whatever they were doing. Thomas Ash and Alex were all talking and Hanji was sitting on Levi's desk snooping through his drawers looking at all his pictures of Eren and him.
TJ unzipped his backpack and pulled out a hairbrush that he had thrown in there this morning since he was running a little late. He started brushing through all the new tangles in his hair as quickly as he could, which looked a little painful.
"Here let me," Eren suggested when he saw TJ struggling to get the back of his hair.
TJ nodded and handed Eren the brush. He was doing it quickly, but his way was a lot softer and wouldn't hurt when he caught on a tangle.
When he was finished he threw his brush back in the bag and reentered the class. Everyone looked up at him and Alex was going to say something but she held her tongue knowing that if TJ needed, or wanted, her help he would ask.
He sat down next to Thomas and Alex and put his bag down next to his chair. He stayed quiet and Thomas looked at him and just gave him a nod and TJ nodded back. They started up a conversation and TJ eventually jumped in.
Soon more and more parents started showing up and not long after Evelyn returned. Hanji had returned to her class and Levi and Eren took their places at the front of their class.
Soon all of the seats were filled as parents and their students sat there, some of the students were outside roaming the halls while their parents were in the meeting. The time had come and they started introducing themselves. The each started their jobs and what they do in the classes and answered some questions. They did this for all of their periods and they watched as a few parents signed up for conferencing with the teachers for different days, they mostly wanted to talk to Eren it seemed, probably to give him information so that he could better help their child learn.
The night went by faster than they thought it would and before they knew it the day was over. There were a few parents still lingering talking with other parents, their children, some still coming up and talking to them. Evelyn had lingered around for a moment mostly because she was blocked by this other lady talking with another parent.
TJ and Alex had snuck away from their mother and had walked up to the front to talk to the teachers one last time for the night. They waited for the parent to stop talking to them before announcing their presence. The father walked away and they walked forward greeting them.
Alex struck up a conversation with Levi and TJ pulled Eren to the side for a moment. "Would you mind if I called you tonight?" He asked twiddling his thumbs not looking Eren in the eyes from embarrassment.
"Of course, I'll make sure to keep my phone on," Eren said giving TJ a smile. He wanted to talk more but he saw their mom approaching and he silenced himself about what he was going to say and he changed his words as they came out of his mouth. "I'm proud of you, you're doing great in all your classes keep it up," Eren said and TJ had a confused look on his face and was going to question him when he heard the footsteps approaching behind him.
"What's going on over here?" She asked looking at her children talking to the teachers.
"Your son and I were just talking about how well he's doing in the class. He's starting the year off right and if he keeps it up he will have no trouble passing the class," Eren told her with a friendly smile but all he got in return was a cold stare.
"I see," she finally said when Levi told her pretty much the same thing but worded differently. "It's time to go, kids, it's getting late," she said once because that's how many times it took for her message to get across. Once was the only time she would say it without repercussions to follow. The kids both nodded and said a quick goodbye before following their mother out of the room.
Thomas and Ash had left earlier so they could stop by their parents' house and get Thomas's things, but they had waved at them from the doorway before leaving.
"Time to head home?" Eren asked after they had finished cleaning the room once more. Almost all of the other teachers had gone home for the night some cleaned others left the chaos for tomorrow. Hanji had already popped in to say her goodbye. Erwin was going to be hanging around a little longer locking everything up and finishing his last bit of paperwork for the night.
Levi took one last look around the room. "Yeah, I think it's clean enough," he said admiring his work.
They went to Erwin's office and said goodbye before heading out to the car. On the way out to the car, Eren pulled out his phone checking to make sure there was no miss calls or texts, as he turned the ringer on. He saw one missed text but it was for Jean telling him that he got to go home and he made it there safely. Eren texted him back and told him he would check up on him during the week and with that, he shoved his phone back in his pocket waiting for it to ring at any moment.
The drive back was an exhaustingly quiet ride. Levi had tried to turn the music on to stop himself from falling asleep, but it didn't work. Eren pulled up to their house just to see his fiance sleeping soundly in the passenger seat. "I'm glad I drove," Eren said sarcastically before getting out and making his way over to Levi's side. Eren gently positioned his arms and lifted Levi up on his back. He walked him into the house and up the stairs laying him in bed. He knew he wasn't in bed for the night, but he would definitely be out for a while. Eren headed back downstairs and worked on some work for the school as his phone sat on the table next to him.
