Sometimes life surprises you

Anna and i finally have our talk. She feels guilty and ashamed of herself. She didn't expect her father reaction would be that bad.

"I'm so sorry. I am a bad girlfriend." She says for the millionth time in the past three hours. We are currently laying in my bed, cuddling.

"You're not. You're just afraid." I play with her hair. "Stop saying sorry. I forgave you already." I kiss her forehead.

"I missed you." She says. Snuggling to my chest. "I miss you too. I'm glad that you're finally here. I thought i lost you." I admit. She pouts and hid her face in my crook.

"My father lectures me right after you're out of my house. He interrogated me, asked me questions, and he took my phone." She says. I froze. There are many photos of us, kissing, making funny faces. Oh my god. Messages. Their full of dirty words.

"Did he..." Anna cuts me off. "He knows about us." She whispers. "He banned me from seeing you or contacting you. That's why you got nothing from me." I nod in understanding.

"That's not all." She continues. I can feel my heart pounding hard in my chest. What does he want? "He asks me to break up with you. On his mind, you are a bad influence." My heart sank. "Dad and mom agree with it. They don't want a lesbian as their daughter. They will disown me."

I can feel my tears run down my cheeks. Is this it? Are we over?

"I love you." My voice cracks. "Don't leave me." I plead.

"I don't want to. But i have to." She says in between sobbing. I don't realize her crying too but i can feel my shirt is drenched.

"You are an adult, baby. You can make your own decision. You cannot let them control you." I try to convince her.

"You can move in with me." I say.

"I-i don't know. Blood is thicker than water. I may be an adult but i still need them. Their opinion is important too."

"You're kidding me. We are perfect for each other. I have you and you have me. What else do you need?" I'm upset right now.

"I'm sorry Elsa. We are over." I untangle myself from her arms, get up from bed and heading to the bathroom, locking the door.

"Elsa, open up." Anna knocks the door. I ignore her. "We need to talk, you know." What else is left to say? I know. So you can say goodbye to me. I cry and cry. I try to stop the tears with no avail. It's getting harder to breath.

"This would be the best for us." How can she say that? We're meant to be together. "Maybe we met at the wrong time and the wrong place." We are not. "Elsa." She keeps knocking and turns the door handle.

I cannot face her. "Just go Anna." I bury my head in between my knees while my back pressed the door.

"I'm so sorry. I am not good enough for you. I'm not strong enough for us." I put my index finger in my ears trying to block her voice.

"Good..."

"Go Anna!" I yell. I breathe heavily. It's over. Damn. It hurts so badly. I manage to hear Anna says something about Jamie is a bad guy. Maybe it's just my mind saying. For all i know Anna is the bad guy here.

Minutes pass like hour. Hours pass like days. Days pass like week. I lack of sleep and i barely eat. I look like a zombie.

Every place i go, i think of her. The park, cinema, and mall. I even cannot go to the Café without reminiscing our happy times while she's still my girlfriend. I huff. Instead i ask a delivery from François.

"Stop thinking about her. She's not worth it." Evelyn says in a bored tone. I just chew my cheesecake. She finds me sleeping on the bathroom floor that night. She went to my apartment to give some reports but didn't get an answer. So she used the spare key. It didn't set for the bathroom though. She's worried and asks the receptionist to open it. As she saw my condition she panicked. She thought i'm dead. She even called an ambulance. The funny thing is i jolted awake when i heard the sirens. I was up screaming 'Fire'.

"She is a heartless bitch." I glare at her. "No one calls her a bitch. She's far from that." I don't even know why i'm still defending her.

Evelyn sighs. "Forget her Elsa. Move on. If she truly loves you, she would never...." She must be realizing my reaction. Tears are starting forming in my eyes and i can say she's tired of it. Instead she says "She would fight for you. She should have though." I sniffle. "There are many other gorgeous women outside. Nicer too." She try to comfort me.

"I know but it's too soon." I put my cake aside suddenly lost my appetite.

"How old is she again?" I know if i answer her, she'll just annoy me with her rambling.

I say "She's twenty four."

"Yeah right. And she still dependent to her parents." I want to argue but.

"Excuse me, ma'am. There are two officers who want to see you." Cynthia says through the intercom. I glance at Evelyn but she just shrugged.

"Send them in."

Two policemen walk in. One of them is a bald middle aged man. He has this serious face on. The other officer is quiet young. Tall and handsome too. The bald man clears his throat. I suddenly get nervous.

"Good afternoon, ma'am. We need to talk with Ms. Johnson." He's eyeing Evelyn.

"I am Elsa Johnson." I shake their hands. "What brings you here, gentlemen?" I motion them to take a sit. "And Evelyn can stay here." Evelyn nods.

"We'll go straight to the point. Your company is under investigation. We believe there are four million dollars missing from your records." Len, the bald man says.

My jaw drops. Four million dollars. Missing.

"Is this a joke?" I laugh nervously. My dad is going to kill me. Evelyn joins the conversation.

"Can you explain us the whole situation? Why do we know this late?"

"We assume there is someone who has been embezzling money from you for the past three weeks and save it with an alias name out of country. It can be your own employee."

"We need all of your employee names. Start from the bottom to the top. I hate to say this but you two are under our investigation too." Officer David explains.

"What?" I ask in disbelief. "There is no way i steal my own money."

"It's the protocol." Len says in a bored tone.

I massage my temple. Evelyn comes to me. "It's gonna be okay. They will find this bastard." She squeezes my shoulders.

"Is there anything i can do?"

"Actually we need your surveillance camera record. We need to arrange some interviews with your coworkers." David says politely. I like him better than Len.

"Do whatever you need. I will fully cooperate."

"Thank you Miss Johnson. We'll do our best." Ah finally some fine words with gentle tone from Len. I nod.

"We will keep you in contact." David says. With that, they leave my office.

I slump in my chair. "This is bad." I grab my phone and dial Dad's number.

"Dad"

"I know Elsa. I'll be there tonight. I'll already hire a private investigator to help the police." He says in one breath.

"Is that even possible, Dad? I mean four million dollars in three weeks?"

"Everything is possible, child." He says in a flat tone.

"I'm sorry, Dad. I should've known earlier. I'm so stupid. I fail you." My head is pounding like crazy.

"You don't fail me. It's not your fault. Don't worry. We will get through this. Okay?"

"Okay." I reply.

Before the line went dead, i say "Don't tell Mom, please."

"I won't."

It's been two weeks and there still no progress. Even with my father's man helping the police, they get nothing. I'm starting to lose hope.

"Dad, can't you hire more man? I don't want this person any satisfaction with our money."

My dad wants to speak but interrupted by the door bursts open. Suddenly Len, David and Chris walk in to my office, without a knock may i say.

"What brings you here? If there is no god news you all can leave." I say annoyed.

"I'm sorry Miss. I've tried to stop them. I know you're talking with your father. They don't listen." Chris speaks.

"I can see that." My dad says from behind the desk.

"My apologies, Sir. We have news. Good and bad." David says.

"Good first." My father motions him to speak. David nods. "We're able to trace down where does the money sent from." He starts. "It was a hell of job but we did it." "Get to the point, officer." My Dad speaks. "All the searching direct us to your own computer here." David points his finger to it. I stare at it in shock. How. "It's from your own account, Miss Johnson. All the money go through a bank in Swiss under false name."

"Oh my God." My jaw hangs open. My mind goes wild. I steal my own money. I'm the culprit. No. I never do that and i never will.

"Don't trick me, officers. My daughter didn't do such things like that." He stands abruptly from his chair.

Len speaks "It's true. We have proves. Do you want to hear the bad news is?" I shiver at his smirk. It's not gonna be good.

He approaches me. "You're under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the Court of Law." Len puts handcuffs in my wrists.

David grab my shoulders and escort me out of my office. I turn my head "Daddy, i didn't do it. You have to believe me..." My eyes starting to watery.

"Don't say a single word. Wait for me." He says sternly. "Evelyn, get your father here." Evelyn rushes to her desk and pick a phone call.

"I believe in you." That's the last thing i heard before i'm dragged out.

***

I sit in the back of the police car. Len is on my right and David is on my left. The driver is another young police. I am so helpless right now. My head is down. Tears are running freely from my eyes. I look at the handcuffs, staring at it. I'm innocent.

What can i say?

Sometimes life surprises you.

I smile bitterly.
