Chapter 10: Open Mind

After discovering that Lonnie was only here because of money, Joyce threw him out and celebrated. At last, she finally stood up to that bastard and freed herself from him. For hours, she continues to put the lights up, but stupid Lonnie managed to tangle them up. She jumps when pounding is made at the door. She rolls her eyes, thinking it was Lonnie crawling back to her.

"Go away, Lonnie." She calls out and continues to unravel the lights.

But the pounding doesn't stop. Frustrated, she throws the lights out of her hand and grips on to her hammer.

"Seriously! I am gonna murd--" She storms up to the door and snatches it open, but she was surprised to see it was Hopper and Amelia, both of them shush her quietly as Hopper holds up a piece of paper, 'Don't SAY ANYTHING!' She frowns at them both, "What? What?" She whispers.

They both quickly get inside, and Hopper looks all around, seeing Christmas lights covering every inch of the house.

Sighing in dismay, "Oh, Jesus." He whispers.

"What is going on?" Joyce whispers.

Amelia gently places Theo on the floor and looks up at all the lights. If the Lab did bug this place, there were many areas where they could plant it.

"What are you doing here, Hopper?" Joyce whispers furiously.

"I can't explain it, but we need to go through all these lights." He whispers as he points at the Christmas lights.

"Why?" She frowns at him.

Jim opens his mouth, but frowns when he watches Amelia dig through her bag and pulls out a small cloth bag with a leather drawstring, "What are you doing?" He whispers.

Amelia holds up her finger over her mouth and reaches in the bag and pulls out a handful of dirt or some sort of powder. Joyce and Hopper both watch in confusion. Opening her palm, Amelia blows gently against the powdered herbs in the air. Joyce and Hopper watch in shock as the powder forms into a cloud and spreads all over the ceiling, stretching throughout the house. Covering the lights and wrapping smoke ropes around the wires.

Amelia studies the smoke and walks through the house, eyeing every inch in every room.

"What is that?" Hopper whispers, pointing at the smoke that hovered over them.

"I'm scanning the house. You could say my very own bug sweeper." Amelia whispers, she places her finger back over her lips and continues to watch the cloud until it fades into the air. She sighs softly and licks her lips, "Ok, they didn't bug this place." She says.

"Are you sure? 100% positive?" He whispers.

"If you want to go through all these lights, one by one, be my guest." She scoffs, "But I am 100% sure they did not bug her house."

Hopper sighs in relief and leans on the wall, looking down at Amelia, grateful for her help. He wasn't sure why he was trusting her word right now after finding out about her secret, but his heart was telling him...he could trust her.

Joyce stands there dumbfounded at both of them, "Are either of you going to tell me what's going on?" She scoffs.

Jim sighs deeply and turns to sit down, taking off his hat, "Okay. Should be okay, I mean...I can't guarantee it, but it should be okay." He rubs his sweaty brow. "Right?" He asks Amelia.

Amelia nods, "It's all clear."

Joyce stood in complete confusion as she looks at everyone for answers, "What the hell is going on, Hopper?" She stammers.

"They bugged my place." Hopper says suddenly.

Joyce frowns at him, "What?"

"They bugged my place. They put a microphone in the light." Hopper continues.

Joyce sighs in confusion.

"He's telling the truth." Amelia says as she sits down on the couch.

"It's because we're on to them and they know it. Well, I don't know about you two, but they're going to know soon. We're not safe." Hopper states.

"I don't know...who?" Joyce stutters, confused with everything.

"Joyce, Hawkins Lab is the reason why Will went missing." Amelia says.

Joyce gasps and Amelia catches her to sit down on the couch with her, "What?" She whispers.

"They know how Will went missing, but they were trying cover it up." Amelia says.

"I thought they might be watching you, too. I don't know, the CIA, the NSA, Department of Energy... I don't know." Hopper adds.

"You gotta explain this to me, 'cause I am not--" Joyce could barely get a straight word out.

"We went to the morgue last night, Joyce." Hopper adds.

Joyce turns quickly to face him, "What?"

"It wasn't him."

Joyce's eyes fill with tears, "What?"

"Will's body, it was a fake." He says.

She covers her mouth as she cries softly.

Amelia places her hands gently over hers, "Joyce, I'm so sorry I didn't speak up for you when you were trying to tell Hopper about Will being alive. I had to help him see the truth first. He believes now."

Hopper nods, "I do. I do believe. You were right, Joyce. This whole time, you were right."

Joyce sobs happily, so happy to hear those words.

"But to get Will back home is going to be hard. Especially, where he is." Amelia sighs out. "You said he was in the wall...right?" She asks as she gets up and exams the boarded up wall where Joyce busted open with an axe.

Sniffling, "Yes, but I tried so hard to get him out. He just...disappeared."

"I went to the lab to look for Will. He wasn't there. But I saw...something. Something that was worth kidnapping, drugging, and even killing people for." Hopper sighs out. Still, in complete shock.

Stammering as she holds a hand up, "Ok, Hopper, you need to tell me everything you know. Everything. What did you see at the lab?" Joyce demanded.

Amelia snaps her head towards a corner, "Mom...I'm here!" A voice calls out, it was weak and faint. "Mom..." Violent coughing echoes through the room. She looks around the room with a concerned look.

Jim frowns at her, "Lia, what's wrong?"

"Shh." She shushes him and listens. "Do you hear that?"

Joyce perks up and tries to be quiet, but Jim frowns at her in confusion, it was too quiet, "Hear what?"

Theo perks up and paces towards the corner, meowing in concern. Jim frowns and Joyce watches Amelia slowly walk towards the corner. Theo begins to rub against the air.

Meow... "I know." Meow...

Amelia turns towards Joyce and Jim with a worried look, "Will doesn't have a lot of time."

Joyce frowns at her with a scared look and gasps softly as Amelia moves to hold her hands in a gentle grip, "Joyce, what we're about to tell you...about what we found...and about me...please keep an open mind."

What Joyce heard from their lips, she could barely believe it, but in a way, she figured it out...especially when Theo protected her against the monster in the wall.

By the time night has fallen, Hopper, Joyce, and Amelia sat at the table as Hopper goes over everything he saw at the Lab. Amelia walks out of the bathroom, dressed in fresh clothes from her bag. She wore jeans and a navy blue sweater.

"Look, we gotta go through this again." Joyce sighs out.

"I told you everything that I saw." Hopper says.

"Oh, gosh. Tell me again." Joyce rolls her eyes, desperate for answers. "Upstairs or downstairs?"

"Upstairs. There was a laboratory. It was where they must do experiments or something, and then there was...There was this kid's room." Hopper inhales his cigarette.

"How do you know it was a kid's room?" Joyce frowns.

"More like a prison." Hopper sighs out, thinking how horrible it is for a child to live in that tiny room, in a lab.

"So why would you think it was a kid's room, then?" Joyce asks.

"Because, I told you, the size of the bed, there was a drawing, there was a stuffed animal--"

Joyce cuts him off, "You didn't say there was a drawing." She stammers out.

"Yeah, there was a drawing of a...an adult and a child. It said 'Eleven' on it." Jim says.

"Was it good?" Joyce asks Hopper.

Hopper scoffs, "It was a kid's drawing, Joyce. It was stick figures." He says.

Sighing in relief, Joyce gets up and rushes to Will's drawings and slaps one in front of Hopper. Pointing out Will's talent.

"Wasn't Will."

Hopper frowns at the drawing, if it wasn't Will...then. He gets up quickly and paces over to the files he brought with him about what he and Amelia found at the library.

"Earl...The night that Benny died, Earl said he saw some kid with a shaved head with Benny. Now, I pressed him, he said it might be Will, but maybe...Wait... Maybe, it wasn't?" He wonders and gets up to head towards the living room and digs through Amelia's bag for the files he made her carry. He pulls out an article of Terry Ives, "Look... this woman, Terry Ives, she claims to have lost her daughter, Jane. She sued Brenner, she sued the government...Now, the claims came to nothing, but what if...I mean, what if this whole time I've been...I've been looking for Will...I've been chasing some other kid?" He wonders.

Amelia rubs her bottom lip and shakes her head, "Who knows how many kids were taken by these people." She sighs and leans down to point at Terry's picture, "If we want to know more about the lab, we're gonna need to talk to Terry. Jim, do you think you can find her address?" She asks.

Jim snorts, "I'm the Chief of Police, I can do anything."

Amelia giggles at his pride.

Hopper was asking around for information where to find Terry Ives. He calls a friend who could help him. Joyce and Amelia waited in Joyce's car for Hopper to be done with his phone call.

"Uh, yeah, it's Ives. Terry Ives. That's with a 'Y'." He listens to the other person on the line.

Joyce sighs as she sits in the back, resting against the driver's seat, "So, you're a witch and Theo is your familiar." She asks, making sure she got that right.

Amelia nods, "Mm-hmm."

"You have powers?" Joyce asks

Amelia makes an 'eh' face, "Sort of. I'm not like an X-Men or anything like that. I summon a special Goddess that my family has followed for centuries. She gives gifts to help me with whatever I need. And I do get these...flashes of future events at times."

Joyce sighs, "Did you summon her to help find Will?"

Amelia sighs, "Will is in a dark place, surrounded by some sort of power that's keeping me from finding him. Maybe it's the lab with their fancy machines, maybe not." She looks at Joyce with a worried look, "But it's something I never felt before in my life."

Theo lies in Amelia's arms and lap, letting out a soft meow that catches her attention, "What?" She asks.

Meow... "Yeah, it is evil. But Will is good at hiding from it." Meow... "Yeah, he's a smart kid." Amelia scratches his neck.

Joyce smiles and reaches to pet Theo, "And very quick on his feet. He knows when and where to hide when trouble starts." She sniffles.

Meow...

"What did he say?" Joyce asks.

Amelia smiles, "He said...'He wishes he had a mother like you'."

Joyce chuckles and coos at Theo, "But you already have a great mom. She's right here." She says as she rubs Amelia's arm, sharing a smile with her.

Meow...

Amelia laughs, "He says I'm not his mom. I'm his best friend. But might as well be a mom...you little stinker. I love you." She kisses his head.

"Yeah, I got a pen. Hang on. Mmm-hmm. Mmm-hmm. Great, thanks. I really appreciate this, Frank. Say hi to the boys for me, too, would you?" Jim says, grinning in triumph as he hangs up the phone.

"I got it." Hopper says as he gets into the driver's side, "Okay." He sighs and starts the car up and takes off.

Amelia sighs and rubs her eyes, neither of them gotten any sleep last night. Hopper was on the phone all night trying to find Terry's address and Joyce hasn't had a decent night's sleep since Will went missing. Amelia couldn't sleep either, the worrying emotion was so thick in that house, it was suffocating.

"You should get some sleep, it's gonna be a few hours before we get there." Jim says as he takes her hand in his, gently squeezing it.

Sniffling softly, Amelia shakes her head, "I don't think I can. I'm so worried for Will."

He sighs heavily, "Yeah, yeah, me, too."

Hopper was right, it took a few hours, but he finally found Terry Ives' house. He goes down a long dirt path, passing a hunter's lookout and finally sees a mailbox. He goes down the driveway and parks in front of the small house.

Hopper gets out and helps Joyce out from the backseat as Amelia gets out on the other side. Together, they all walked up towards the door and Hopper knocks.

Soon, a woman peeks from the glass door, frowning in confusion as she sees the many visitors. She opens the door and eyes them all.

"Can I help you?" She asks.

"Hi, we're looking for Terry Ives. Does she live here?" Hopper asks.

"Who's asking?" The woman asks.

"The Hawkins chief of police." Hopper says as he flashes his badge.

"And you want to talk to my sister?"

"Well, if your sister's Terry Ives, then, yeah, we do." Hopper says.

The sighs and scoffs, "Okay, well, you can come in, but if you want Terry to tell you anything, you're about five years too late." She warns.

Amelia and Hopper shared a confused look, but they all walk inside. The woman guides them towards a small living room with the TV playing. The woman walks in first and gestures them to follow.

"Terry, you have some visitors."

Joyce walks in first with Hopper and Amelia behind her. Sitting in a chair in front of the tv, a woman dressed in a sweater and nightgown looks up with a blank look. Amelia frowns as she sees her.

"Hello. My name's Joyce Byers. Uh, this is Hopper and Amelia. We drove over from Hawkins. Um, you see, uh, my son...he's been missing for almost a week now, and, um, we were wondering if we could talk to you about your daughter, Jane? If there's anything that you could tell us about when she was taken..." Joyce explains.

But, Terry remains quiet.

"What was your relationship with Dr. Brenner? You guys keep in touch?" Hopper asks.

Joyce moves and unfolds a missing picture of Will, holding it up for Terry to see, "This is, uh... this is him. This is Will. Uh, you may have seen him on...on the news." She stammers as the woman remains the same.

"What's wrong with her?" Hopper asks.

"I told you, you're wasting your time." The woman sighs out and tells them to follow her towards the kitchen.

"She was a part of some study in college." They learned that the woman's name was Becky Ives. She lights up a cigarette and inhales sharply.

"MK Ultra?" Hopper asks.

"Yeah, that's the one. Was, uh, started in the '50s. By the time Terry got involved, it was supposed to be ramping down, but the drugs just got crazier. Messed her up good." Becky says as she exhales.

"This was the CIA that ran this?" Hopper asks.

Becky scoffs, "You and Terry would've gotten along. 'The Man', with a big capital 'M.'" She sighs, "They'd pay... you know, a couple hundred bucks to people like my sister, give 'em drugs, psychedelics. LSD, mostly. And then they'd strip her naked and put her in these isolation tanks." Becky frowns as she remembers what Terry told her from the past.

"Isolation tanks?" Joyce frowns.

"Yeah. These big bathtubs, basically, filled with salt water, so you can float around in there. You lose any sense of, uh...sense and feel nothing, see nothing. They wanted to expand the boundaries of the mind. Real hippie crap. I... I mean, it's not like they were forcing her to do any of this stuff. The thing is, though, is that she didn't know she was pregnant at the time." Becky says.

"Jane." Amelia says in realization as flashes of the little girl named Eleven invade her mind.

"Do you have any pictures of her?" Joyce asks.

Becky was surprised of that question, "I don't think you guys understand. Terry miscarried in the third trimester."

Everyone was shocked to hear that.

Becky shows them a small room that had a Crib with mobile and all.

"She keeps all of this up. Been doing it for 12 years." Becky says and sits on the arm rest of a chair. "Terry, uh, pretends like Jane is real, like she's gonna come home someday. Says she's special. Born with 'abilities'." She scoffs.

"Abilities?" Joyce frowns.

"You read any Stephen King?" Becky chuckles at their faces, "You guys look scared, actually. I mean, it's all make-believe." She rolls her eyes.

Amelia clears her throat, "What... what kind of abilities?" She asks.

Becky sighs, "Telepathy, telekinesis...You know, shit you can do with your mind. That's why the big, bad Man stole Jane away." She scoffs, "Her baby's a weapon, off fighting the commies. You know, the doctors all say it's a coping mechanism. You know, to deal with the guilt."

"Do you think there is any chance she could be telling the truth?" Joyce asks and Becky gives her a disbelieved look, "About having had the kid." Joyce stammers as she corrects herself.

"There is no birth certificate, nothing from the hospital. Doctors and nurses all confirm that she miscarried." Becky shakes her head.

"Yeah, but that could've been covered up. Right?" Hopper suggests.

Becky chuckles, "Like I said, you and Terry would've gotten along."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Well, thank you for your time. We appreciate it." Hopper says to Becky as she shows them out after telling them as much as she could.
"Hmm, yeah, I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help." She nods at them. She sighs as she watches them all, "Good luck."
"Thank you." Amelia says.
Joyce looks back at Terry, looking at her in such sadness. Thinking, 'is this going to be me soon?' 'Will I ever get my boy back or will I wait 12 years like she did?' She couldn't help but think that horror. She flinches when she feels a soft hand on her shoulder.
"Come on, Joyce." She says softly and gently guides her out. Once they were out the door, she leans into whisper, "You're not going to become her. We'll get him back."
Joyce looks up at her and sighs heavily, remembering that she could see future events, but will everything be ok?
Joyce shuts the car door as she looks down in disappointment. She was hoping for something more, but she felt like she was back where she started.
"Hey..." Hopper snaps her out her thoughts.
"What?" She asks softly.
"We're gonna find him." He says strongly.
Joyce scoffs, "Yeah, like Terry found her daughter?"
"We're close." Amelia states.
Joyce's breath begins to tremble, "Twelve years? Twelve years she's been looking for her--"
"And then she shows up at Benny's five nights ago, which means we've got a chance." Hopper says and a pained, yearning look forms on his face, "You know what I would give? For a chance? You know what I would give?" He asks as he begins to think about Sarah.
Joyce sighs, understanding him.
"What any of us would do for a chance." Amelia sighs and takes his hand again, feeling him grip it.
Theo snuggles on to Joyce's lap, purring soothingly and meows in confirmation.
Suddenly, the radio erupts in the air, "Hey, Chief, you there? Hey, Chief?" Callahan's voice calls out.
Hopper sighs and reaches for the handheld, "Yeah, go ahead."
"Yeah, a fight broke out here and--"
Hopper cuts him off, "Cal, I don't have time for this."
"It's Jonathan Byers. You haven't seen Joyce, have you?"
Joyce's eyes widen in shock, "My Jonathan?" She gasps.
"Is he ok?" Hopper asks.
"He's a little banged up, but ok, he's cooling his heels at my desk. Charges will be filed."
"What?!" Joyce exclaims.
"I'm on my way." Hopper says and cuts the call. He starts the truck up and heads back towards Hawkins. Amelia and Joyce grunt as their bodies were shoved back by the speed Hopper was going. Even Theo was gripping the seat with a fearful meow.
