Chapter Four

Conor followed Abeke through the thick leaves and vines, his bow in his hand. He'd been trying to learn how to hunt with the help of Abeke and her skill. "Are you sure we're going north?" Conor asked.
"Mmmhm." Abeke replied.
"How can you tell?" Conor questioned.
"I just know, Conor." Abeke rolled her eyes.
Conor flinched. "Am I too annoying?" He guessed.
"Sort of. I don't blame you, I could tell my father thought of me as one thing. Annoying." Abeke answered.
Conor laughed briefly. "The only odd thing I've been called by is slow." He shrugged.
"You're true yet wrong. You can be slow but not always." Abeke huffed.
"Nothing?"
"Nothing."
Conor sighed. "Want to split up? I think I've learned enough. Plus it's not the first time I've used a bow." Conor asked.
Abeke thought about it. "Why not? You go north, I'll go west." She ran off, bow at side.
Conor started heading north, keeping to it for a while. He suddenly heard voices, though they sounded like kids his age. He raised a brow, walking swiftly yet quietly to where they sounded from. Two boys, one with brown hair and the other with blonde.
"You don't have to, Devin." The blond haired one said gently.
Devin shrugged. "I don't know. You're worrying, Shane. I know it." He grinned slightly.
Conor only then caught the wings they had on their back. He nearly fell over, making a small noise. He saw Devin's gaze quickly flick over to his direction, and he didn't realize he was in sight until Devin spoke.
"Well, we have company." Devin said coldly.
"Calm down, sunny boy, I'm pretty sure some idiot would be too shocked to remember we have a bundle of feathers." Shane rolled his eyes.
"So, stranger, stalker or hunter?" Devin questioned.
Conor gulped. He probably would remember they had "a bundle of feathers". "My name is Conor, thanks...stranger. Im hunting." Conor sneered.
"For what exactly?" Devin snapped.
Shane whacked Devin. "Would you shut up?"
Devin grumbled something as Conor rolled his eyes at the two.
Conor could feel something he wasn't so sure of, but it happened on impulse as he moved his hand around and a vine wrapped around Devin's ankle. He heard Devin scream in surprise. Conor stared at his own hand for a second, confused and scared. What had he just done? He didn't know. He noticed Devin's face wasn't filled with anger, but panic. Conor blinked, regretting it.
"Just like Dawson..." Shane mumbled.
"Yeah, but Dawson didn't do anything dangerous!" Devin nearly yelled.
Conor sighed. "Sorry..." He whispered weakly. He didn't want it to sound like that, but it happened. No going back.
"You're sorry? Didn't you just wrap a vine around my ankle? Undo it!" Devin snarled.
Conor didn't know what to say. It happened so quick. He could tell Devin wasn't angry, which he was thankful for, but the other boy was panicking yet hid it. "I...I don't know how..." Conor said.
Devin made a noise that sounded like a hiss to Conor. "You know how to do it but you don't know how to undo it?"
"I don't know how I did it!" Conor burst out. He heard rustling in the bushes behind him, so he whirled around.
"Conor!" Abeke cried, grabbing Conor's arm.
"Yeah?" Conor raised a brow, hugging her.
"I started a fire! I don't know how! I didn't have a rock and stick, I didn't have anything but my bow and hands!" Abeke gasped.
Conor saw Shane huff.
"More powers?"

Conor rolled his eyes. "I don't think powers exist."
Shane crossed his arms. "That's almost exactly what Devin said. Even after he gained mockingbird wings." Shane flashed his gaze over to Devin playfully.
Devin released his wings from his sweater, hitting Shane's face. "Love ya."
Shane cracked up, flicking a feather off of his shoulder and placing it on Devin's nose. "Fine then."
Conor watched. "You guys seem insane." He saw Abeke nod next to him.
"You're the insane one for pretty much pinning me to the ground.." Devin grumbled.
Conor leaned in. "I don't know what happened with my hand, but you need to get over a small vine, Devin." He hissed.
Devin gulped. "Still."
Shane stared at Conor. "Don't touch him, peasant." Shane snapped.
"Look, if we're going to get away with having powers, then we should stick together. We can't risk it." Abeke said.
Devin's immediately groaned. "With him?" He pointed at Conor with his pinky finger.
Shane tapped Devin's shoulder. "You're going to get a bad reputation, trust me."
"Bad reputation...more like bad attitude..." Conor mumbled.
"I heard that!" Devin whined.
"Abeke has a point. We should stick together."
"Like glue." Abeke smiled.
