Chapter Five
Abeke sat there under the tree, confused. She had done nothing to make a fire. They had gotten far enough to be safe, but she never knew how fast it could spread. Abeke looked over at Conor and the rest. Conor was fast asleep, Devin was fiddling with grass, and Shane looked like he was thinking. "What is it?" Abeke asked, fixing her eyes on Shane.
"I'm not sure. Everything is happening too fast. Devin and I got wings, Conor somehow got a vine to go around Devin's ankle, and then you start a fire." Shane shook his head.
"Which I'm still not pleased of." Devin looked up from his grass.
"It's a fricken vine, Devin. What can a vine do?" Abeke asked.
"Hey, some vines have spiky stuff." Devin shrugged.
Conor suddenly opened one eye, glancing around. "You guys are noisy like heck."
"You're welcome." Abeke laughed. She laid down, staring at the leaves in the trees. "Let's get some rest?"
"Yeet." Devin sighed, flopping down next to Shane, who had laid down after Abeke.
Abeke opened her eyes to a feather on her nose. She sneezed, sitting up. Devin and Shane were gone. Only Conor remained. "Where are they?!" Abeke demanded.
"Clam down, child," Conor chuckled. "They went hunting."
Abeke sighed in relief, crawling over to him. "They better be back soon. I'm starving."
Conor only smiled, nodding. "So am I."
Abeke wanted to laugh as Shane and Devin clumsily landed from the air. She grinned as she heard Conor crack up behind her.
"Oi, we've only had a few days of practice." Devin grunted, dropping a rabbit. Shane dropped three birds, swallowing and cringing.
"Oh, hey, a bird caught a bird." Abeke could hear Conor chuckle a little, but gasped as Devin smacked him right across the face. Conor yelled. "What the f*ck is your problem?!" Conor snapped.
"You're just trying to make him feel uncomfortable." Devin sneered.
"I'm okay, Devin. Really." Shane coughed awkwardly. Devin only grunted and leaned into him.
Abeke watched as the others walked, now and then chuckling quietly as Conor and Devin tripped a few times on their shoelaces. Devin and Shane had hidden theirs wings under their sweaters by now. Dawson had joined them and every five minutes, splashed them with the water in a puddle. "Dawson, I swear to Tellun, if you continue this, I will set fire to your shoes and you'll be the one getting soaked." Abeke growled. Dawson only grinned and winked.
"That's the point." He smirked. Devin roughly nudged his brother's shoulder.
"Great job, child."
"A**hole."
"OH."
"Where exactly are we staying?" Abeke cut in. She wanted to at least test her powers on a bonfire.
Devin yawned. "Most likely in a tree."
"A tree?"
"Sleep deprivation or eight hours of sleep?"
Abeke spat at him while Shane rolled his blue eyes. Conor had been oddly quiet, which was rare. "Welp, let's find that tree."
Abeke groaned in agony. Her back and neck was cramped, and the bark on the tree was too rough. Even worse, it was Conor's pick, but she wouldn't go suing her friend. Instead, she looked over at him, which he was still sound asleep. Shane wasn't there, but Devin was lying down on the grass, pulling it apart in boredom. "Where'd your boyfriend go?" She laughed softly.
"He went exploring, I guess." Devin mumbled.
Abeke flinched. "Well, you respond to that?"
"Sure." Devin shrugged.
"....What about..Devy." Abeke grinned.
"OHMYGODNO." Devin screeched.
Abeke winced. "You probably just woke up Conor." She hissed.
"Devin wakes up everyone. Most likely. I bet he'll scream in our ears next time." Conor murmured.
Abeke and Conor laughed and even Devin smiled a bit. But would they get along for as long as they needed to, and face the troubles ahead of them. He thoughts were broken as Dawson shoved a piece of grass in her mouth. Abeke spat it out, turning to Dawson. "I will hurt you."
"Devin won't like that."
"Is your brother your 'hero'?"
"Yep."
Before Abeke could reply, Devin made finger guns at her. Abeke sighed, whacking them both as Devin tried crawling away.
"SH*T." Devin yelled.
"Whatcha Get is Whatcha need." Abeke winked.
