Chapter 1: Hi
I walked towards the large building towering over me. I carried a few books with me as I walked into the building. The library. And I have to admit it, it is my favourite place in the world. I hand in my books and walked over to a few bookshelves, hunting for a good book, and eventually I ended up with 'The Secrets We Kept', written by Lara Prescott. My feet carried me to a table for four persons, but as usual, no one was in the library so I sat alone. Not that I mind, I liked being alone.
However, I started reading the book and drifted off from this world, only to be thrown into the one the book created. Forgive me, I am quite obsessive when it comes to books. Oh, and I also write a lot of stories myself. It was my escape from this world. But you know what they say, right? Books beat reality. I once received a postcard with that quote from my neighbour, she's lovely. And also my best friend, because I am socially awkward when it comes to making new friends... I should probably stop rambling on about senseless things and continue with the story...
I consumed the pages like they were some delicious dessert and after an hour or six, I finished the book. What? I just like to reread things... However, I placed the book back on the bookshelf and went looking for one I could take home, because it was close to five o'clock so the library was almost closing. I placed the book back onto the shelf and turned into corridor. When I saw a book I liked, 'cause of the cover, let's face it, the first thing we do if we pick a book is look at the cover, I went to pick it up. When I picked the book up, a hole formed in the wall of books and a face appeared on the other side of the bookcase. I squeaked, slightly. The person who stood there giggled and disappeared only to walk into the corridor I was in.
'I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you, dear,' he spoke in a low, masculine voice. He had brown, wavy hair that reached just above his shoulders and blue eyes. I swallow slowly, taking in his appearance. Well, he was rather hot. Okay, okay, he was hot. You assume he is in his early thirties. Or even his late twenties... Hey! Snap out of it!
'It's... fine,' I mumble, still taken a bit aback.
'Hi.' He chuckled and approached me.
'Hi,' he said when he stood in front of me. I thought he was going to say something, but he grabbed a random book behind me. 'There it is.' He shook the book slightly before his eyes as he looked at me. 'I'm Nick.' He had a glint in his eyes as he said his name, like he was expecting that I would know him.
'Yeah... uh, I'm... Natasha,' I said awkwardly. Yes, I told you, I just don't know what to say to strangers.
'Well, Natasha, do you come, uh, here often?' I nod.
'Every Saturday.' Yep. I just told a stranger when I come here. What if he was a kidnapper? Next time he could just snatch me away from my habitat. And with habitat I mean the library. I inwardly facepalmed myself. He nodded and gave me a genuine smile, which I returned kindly. 'And you?' Okay, this was just a terrible attempt to keep a conversation from bleeding to death.
'I just got in this lovely town a few days ago...' He was still looking at me with a little suspicion in his eyes. Was he expecting I knew him? Nick, Nick, Nick... I do not know any Nick... Sorry, man.
'Oh, really.' I was getting nervous. I didn't know what to say to him and second... I just wanted to go home and forget about another awkward moment.
'Yeah, me and my friends moved here.' He was giving me another look as if saying: 'This was a gigantic hint.' I decided to just ask him.
'I'm sorry, do I have to know you?' Maybe this was a harsh way of putting it. Well, I guess I have to learn to think before I speak. He shrugged.
'I don't know, depends on your taste of music.' I gave him a confused look.
'I-' I tried talking, but nothing came out. My eyes slid over some colourful books on the shelf behind him and the back to him. 'I think I should head home. Excuse me, sir.' I turned around and slowly started to walk away.
'It's Nick.' I turned around to look him in the eye, a surprised look on my face. A smirk crept his way up his lips. 'Sir sounds so... serious.' You laughed a nervous laugh. He chuckled. 'Bye, Natasha.' That reminded you that you were leaving.
'Bye... Nick.' Me saying his real name, instead of sir, seemed to lighten up his face.
I stood outside the library and it started to rain, but instead of running to the bustop, I stared at the sky, the rain pouring over me like a fresh shower. And it smelled amazing. The smell of rain always made me think clearer, but this time, the confusion didn't went away. I didn't know what this feeling was, but it was not that I disliked it or something. It was rather heartwarming.
I did not recall coming home, it only hit me when my mom called out to me and wished me a goodnight. All I could think of was the impression the stranger had made on me.
