Chapter Nine: Exactly What The Name Is
The crowd shouts and cheers after hearing what the game is, and even Andy, as confused as he is, thinks he knows what the game is: exactly what the name is. As everyone lines up in an extremely unorganized way, while this doesn’t indicate what the game is, it does show how underdeveloped all the citizens in this town are.
“This is the straightest line since we started this game!” The man on the stage says, clearly proud of everyone. Many people grin, happy about their small accomplishment.
Andy follows the crowd’s lead, standing next to a woman in her forties. A clump of dirt hangs from her hair, prompting the question, does she know it’s there? He attempts to ignore it, facing the front of him, where the man that was once on the stage is now walking down the long line of people with a stern look on his face, analyzing everyone there.
“You,” says the man, stopping in front of Bobby. He stares down the line towards Andy, giving him a thumbs up as he grins widely. The man slaps him in the face, walking back on the stage.
“Let the game begin!”
Chaos erupts after that sentence and people scatter everywhere away from Bobby as he chases anyone he can get near. Slaps and screams are heard everywhere as Andy runs aimlessly, not sure what exactly to do as the elementary school gym-like scene takes place around him. Two people slam into each other, falling to the ground as the last person to be slapped hits the young man that fell to the ground on his red and sweaty cheek.
Suddenly, a woman in her twenties is charging towards Andy, slamming her hand on his face.
“Ah!” He shouts, rubbing his left cheek. Everyone stares down at him, motionless like a mannequin, as he looks back at all of them with a flustered look. Eventually understanding that he needs to slap someone, he charges towards the crowd, everyone moving away from him as he attempts to hit someone’s wet cheek, since who isn’t sweaty at this point?
