Impossible ~7~

Calypso

First, I get stuck with an annoying and immature boy as my seat partner.

Fine. Whatever. As long as he doesn't bother me.

Second, he bothers me. A lot.

I mean, would it kill him to stop calling me that ridiculous nickname? My name is Calypso not Sunshine, thank you very much.

Though sometimes he's not all that bad. Like when he's completely focused in on a project and his eyebrows furrow together and a piece of his curly brown hair, that I want nothing more to do with than run my fingers through it, falls into his beautiful fire held eyes...

Wait.

Scratch that. I do not like Leo Valdez in the least.

Not at all.

And, third...his stupid yet pretty cool device catches on fire.

What is it with him and fire? It's like all of his inventions include something that has to do with fire.

Fire rocket, fire hose, fire cannonball. And now a Fire Chandelier. The least he could do is wear safety gloves or something.

But no. He goes and gets his hand burnt by the fire coming out from under his invention.

I gasped loudly and quickly bent down to turn off the device so it wouldn't end up catching the floor on fire and immediately reached for Leo's hand, like I cared what would happen to him.

I mean, of course I care...I'm not that heartless.

He flinched when my hand touched his arm, like he was expecting pain but received none.

I quickly glanced to his hand and gasped again, quickly letting go and backing away from him, my hands clutching the black table behind me as my heart beat wildly in my chest.

That's impossible! My mind screamed. I saw his hand catch fire! I saw it!

As the entire class turned to stare at his perfectly okay hand, Leo looked down and I swear his eyes were about to pop out of their sockets.

"Wha-how...?" Leo stammered, looking as confused as I was.

I carefully etched forward and reached out to him. I touched his hand and again he flinched. I thought I'd hurt him before his face calmed.

"It doesn't hurt?" I whispered, slightly unbelieving as I took his hand and examined it.

Nothing. No burns or any signs that there had been a fire attached to his skin. His hands were normal with their grease stains and callused fingers.

Not that I payed attention to his hands...that's just weird.

He shook his head and I moved up eyes up to see his mesmerized on my hands.

I blinked, realizing what I was doing and quickly dropped my hands, suddenly cold without the warmth from Leo's.

I coughed. "Uh, well, I guess he didn't get burnt after all." I said loudly so the whole class could hear.

Leo gave me a strange look and I shrugged, not even sure what I was doing.

"But the fire touched his hand!" A girl in the class, Tiffany, exclaimed and I saw other students nod in agreement.

I rolled my eyes. "Well you must have been standing at a weird angle, because clearly no fire touched him. Now stop gawking, I'm sure Mr. Norr wants to continue examining projects. Right, Mr. Norr?"

I turned to our middle aged teacher with pepper hair and a wrinkly dress shirt and he blinked, as if coming out of shock.

"Yes. Thank you Calypso. Please help Mr. Valdez clean up his mess." He gestured to the broken pieces of chandelier sprawled out on the floor and I blinked, wondering how I'd missed that.

I must have been to focused on his hand.

Now, I would usually decline anything that had to do with Leo Valdez, but since I was still slightly in shock, I nodded and bent down to pick the metal up.

Mr. Norr continued his trip around the room, carefully going around Leo and I as we cleaned.

I helped him gather up the main piece in silence and we walked over to set it on his side of the desk we shared.

"I'll go get the broom." I muttered, about to turn for the closet at the back of the room when Leo's hand grabbed my wrist.

"You know the fire caught my hand." He whispered urgently and I nodded.

"Yes. I saw."

"Why didn't you tell them that?" He frowned and I bit the inside of my cheek, telling myself that he certainly did not look cute when he was upset.

"Let's talk about it at lunch." I muttered and he hesitated before nodding and letting go of my wrist so I could get the broom to fi wish cleaning up the mess on the floor.

What a strange world this is.
