Chapter Eight

Micki's POV

"how am I looking?"

"umm...?"

I throw a red cushion over at Thor, feeling completely embarrassed at my attire of black pencil skirt and mahroon blouse with my hair pinned and tied up in a sleek pony. I feel elderly as I step into baige peep toes my mother bought on sale yesterday evening just to please me for such an achievement.

"What? How am I supposed to answer that? You look...different and, god forbid me from killing myself to say this but you do look mature."

My hands bulge out in a gesture that say -am-I-supposed-to-beg-a-thank-you-to-you-now?

"you asked for that!" he threatens to throw a piece of butter popcorn and I shake my head because I don't want to look disoriented on the first day of my internship.

When Dorothy told me about my profile she said that for now I am being placed in the editorial department as an intern and if I have good communication and creative thinking skills I can make my position permanent in their firm and see my career flourish ahead in it.

Little does she know, my motives are completely different and I deliberately wanted to dress like someone who would possibly knock the airbags out of my new boss. I need his trust immediately to expose him and his dark side. I feel like I am turning a new chapter of star wars!gosh!

My thought process is disturbed shamelessly when something knocks against my temple and my eyes tune into reality. Thor snickers and says, "You spaced out once again. What were you thinking about?"

"Star wars."

"Star wars? You're so random Micks!  This J.D. (Job description)  definitely suits you."

"are you making fun of me now?"

"Y--"

"Guys, you can chat later. Micki you're running late, your dad is waiting in his car downstairs. Get going baby."

My mom says and I happily oblige. I could have gone in my own car but my father wants to see by himself his daughter growing up. Eyes rolls to that, but he is my father and currently he is feeding my grumpy and gluttony stomach and not to forget, because of him and my mother I have successfully landed on earth. You get my point, right? So respect your parents no matter what, lest you would have been drained down in a gutter or some shit.

*GAG*

Zooming in on present, my dad just gave me motivational tedx talk before pushing me out of his car. Nervousness settles in me as if it was waiting for its chance. My heels clock against the pavement in front of the giant glass building and I readjust my sling bag.

"Get in there already, kiddo!!"

My father shouts while reversing his car out of the curb and I look back at him with shyness that's totally new to me.

"Go away, dad..." I roll my eyes at him and whisper slowly which he understands from afar and chuckles before disappearing from my sight.

As soon as I turnabout, I clash into a body and our accoutrements fall down. Why does it happen to only me? Lately I have been bumping into people or I am turning blind to the world.

When I look up, I see the most innocent and beautiful face I have  ever seen on a girl. She looks like an angel with a button nose, small lips and cute pixie haircut. A small mole on her chin makes her look extraordinary.

Her bangles make a sound when we both start to gather our stuff and I notice she already has an ID card hanging around her neck.

"I am sorry, I didn't see you."

I blurt out before the situation turns out any more awkward on my first day of internship.

She gives me a sweet smiles and replies, "It's okay, I was in a hurry myself. Our boss wants everyone to be punctual and if we both don't get going in...,"she looks at her wrist watch and then continues further facing me with a dip on her forehead, "in like 2 minutes, we both will be in trouble."

Before my mouth can drastically open like a cave and let the atrocity of the moment digest, we both quicken our steps as she drags me inside through electronic doors; greeting the guards in hurry while we are running for the elevator to the extreme left, she pants, "I am Savannah, by the way, and you're?"

"I am Micki Waters."

Her tongue lashes on her front teeth and her mouth pouts in a thought while we ride upwards in the elevator.

"Nice name!"

She jumps and claps her hands with eagerness that tops the ceiling and it makes me feel that she will be my comrade and confidant in making the environment lively for me.

The elevator rings when we reach 11th floor.

"That's our floor, c'mon greenie, let's introduce you to editing staff."

"Greenie?" I ask curiously.

"aye, I meant the new chick in our coven."

I swear I burst out laughing at the choice of her words and she follows suits and we do a classy Hi-Fi while she maneuvers me ahead to the cubicle section.

At the front desk I am being greeted charmly by Dorothy who is effortlessly taking calls from one hand and typing something into computer from another. She looks like super human to me.

Savannah told me inside the elevator that I have to get my keys and ID card from Dorothy which she hands me over without even looking at me when I tell request her for the same. Apparently, a yellow envelope was already ready on her desk regarding my items and a form which I have to fill for updating my Know Your Customer credentials.

"You can fill it up later on, I need one copy of your documents and certificates along with two photographs. Come back to me in lunch and I will set your biometric."

Dorothy speaks to me while counting cash in her hand and while she reads something on computer.

I am about to faint witnessing her finesse. She definitely multitalented. I simply nod silently while Savannah comes back to me and takes me inside to introduce me to everyone.

"Don't mind Dorothy, she's just doing her duty. Once you get to know her, you will definitely like her."

"I didn't mind her. I was kind of amazed. There are very less people who can move my thinking process and she's one of them. Her brain is something that's always hyperactive."

Savannah chuckles and shakes her head.

"You're crazy!"

"In comparison to Dorothy? No way. I am the sanest of all." I smirk and look back at Dorothy's desk once more only to find Mr. Arrogant standing there and staring at me as if either I disgust him too much to make it hard for him to breathe or he has a serious issue of constipation this morning. The thought of latter makes me laugh internally when my eyes land on his hands and my expressions transfer into a regime of utter seriousness.

His hands are bandaged. Did he hurt himself? What happened to him? Should I ask somebody?

"Hey, stop staring at him. He's our boss, Mr. Jared, in case you don't know and he is completely inhumane."

"What does that mean?"

"He's..." she stops abrupty and suspiciousness grows inside me intentionally which won't quench until I know what's the matter.

Before I can ask her further, a group of five people surround me and another two people enter in the same area with their own yellow envelopes. I guess they are the rest of the interns.

Soon we all move ahead in the conference hall as we all will be getting a joint orientation from our boss himself today.

And before that Dorothy enters and plays on a power point presentation on different kinds of media and adverisement and the true meaning behind the lines. The session goes on for half an hour and then we take a ten minutes break before Mr. Jared can start his session.

I wouldn't be lying to say that I am nervous and I don't know where to start my search from to know the inside out of Jared. Throughout the entire session, my mind bugs me to know about his wound and my heart skips a beat once or twice. I am stunned to feel sad at his pain. He has nothing to do with me and he is nothing but an obstacle for me. I am reminded of the same when Savannah calls me out of the room to have a coffee and her change of behaviour in the presence of Jared in the morning flashes back in front of my mind.

I fight hard not to stop in the middle because I have a hunch that she knows something about him... Something terrible even.
