Sugawara - Picnics and Practices

I hurried through the park as I looked for the group I was supposed to meet. I really wish I had been able to tell my old friend no to this meet up. Why did she have to be so persuasive? I always had such a hard time telling her no to things, just like when we were growing up.

But still, why did I have to come along? I didn't even know any of these people. I didn't even go to the same school as her anymore, so why make me show up? We hadn't even seen each other regularly in years!

I mean, I still considered her a friend of course and made the effort to visit her at her home at least every once in a while, but nothing like when we were going to school together. She was always so busy now with that club.

Oh well, at least this would be a chance to see what kind of people she was spending time around, instead of just hearing about them once in a while. And it was a chance to show her how much my cooking had improved since last time I made food for her!

Pulling the heavy (f/c) wagon behind me, filled with everything needed for a picnic lunch, I made my way towards the location she had told me the meet up would take place.

--------

It took a while longer to find the right spot. Who knew there could be so many places here that seemed to match the description she gave me? But at last I saw the group of boys smacking a volleyball back and forth over the net they had set up nearby.

I stood watching for a while, my (e/c) eyes wide in amazement, before I saw Kiyoko standing to the side talking to a young looking man wearing glasses. I guess this must be either the clubs coach or adviser from the school. Hurrying over with the wagon behind me, I began waving my free arm as I called out to her.

"Kiyo-chan! I finally found you! Do you have any idea how huge this park is, Kiyo-chan? Next time send someone to help me! This wagon is a pain to pull this far! I don't care how much you missed my cooking, it's not worth the back pain I will probably be suffering from tomorrow!" I whined playfully at my old friend as various boys from the group began looking at me oddly.

"Eh?! Kiyoko-senpai, do you know this girl?!" Two overly excitable boys yelled out to her as they raced over, their eyes wide as they seemed to be trying to decide whether I was safe to be allowed near Kiyoko or not.

"Awww! Kiyo-chan, I didn't know you had two such adorable boys protecting you these days! I feel so much better about leaving you at that school now!" I smiled brightly at the two boys now attempting to hide their blushing cheeks behind their hands.

I couldn't help but give them each a quick hug. I giggled as I watched the red spread to the tips of their ears as they began shouting random nonsense to each other before I started moving forward, my wagon of goodies pulled behind me once more.

"So Kiyo-chan, I hope you still like Tenmusu, because I fixed lots of it for you! There's also pork buns, omurice, vegetable curry and a bunch of other dishes I thought would be fun to make! And cake for desert!" I was almost bouncing with joy at this point, waiting to see if she showed any interest in the dishes I had named.

I almost danced at the tiny smile that lit up her face. I guess she did still like Tenmusu, just like in middle school. Thank goodness some things never change.

"Oh yeah! I also made some spicy mapo tofu! I just learned the recipe a few weeks ago so I thought this would be a great chance to make it and see if anyone likes how it turned out! I hope nobody minds!" I could see one of the boys perk up at my words, his brown eyes brightening as he began staring happily at the wagon behind me.

A few of the other boys began wandering over as I started setting down the blanket and lining the center with bowls and platters filled with different kinds of food. I had spent all morning cooking, even getting up early to prepare the dough for the buns.

Placing down the last dish of food, I smiled at the boys who stood there, eyes gleaming as they stared at the food spread before them. I could only hope they liked my cooking as much as Kiyo-chan always had.

"Don't be shy! Go ahead and help yourselves to the food!" I pointed to the empty dishes waiting to be filled with food that still sat within the (f/c) wagon, watching happily as they hurried forward to start grabbing and filling plates.

--------

I sat beside Kiyo-chan as she wrote down notes on each of the boys in front of us as they played volleyball. I was starting to understand why she had stuck with them for so long now. They really were something special.

Each one of them was amazing in their own way, from the freakishly quick orange-haired spiker to the fantastic saves their libero made to keep the ball in the air and the game going. Even the sarcastic blonde giant showed hints of his talent in the game, when he wasn't busy trash talking the dark haired server on the other side of the net.

My favorite to watch was the other server, the one with pale grey hair that had seemed to enjoy the spicy mapo tofu I had made. He had such a warm smile and really worked hard to keep his team encouraged during the game.

"Thanks for talking me into coming here, Kiyo-chan. This has been a lot more fun than I thought it would be." I grinned at her, seeing the hint of a smile in her eyes as she nodded to me.

I barely managed to stop myself from jumping up and cheering loudly. I had gotten Kiyo-chan to smile at me not just once, but twice! I was totally on a roll today! I would have her laughing for sure before I went home!

I completely missed the weird looks I was beginning to get from some of the team members as I happily rocked from side to side, contemplating how I could complete my new mission to hear Kiyoko laughing.

I also missed the hint of pink spreading across the cheeks of one brown eyed boy as he looked at my smiling face.

--------

I'd failed at getting her to laugh but I still felt good about the day. I had managed to get her to smile again, after all! Although, it was only because I had agreed to meet up with them again some other weekend for another picnic lunch.

Although it would mean another long morning of cooking, I really couldn't say no when I had that many boys looking at me with such hopeful eyes. Even their adviser seemed eager for me to agree. I'd simply nodded my head and smiled at them, telling them to feel free to request any favorite dishes they would like me to bring next time.

"You already had a few favorites in there. Surely you noticed the ones who kept going back for seconds and thirds on some of the dishes." Kiyo-chan's quiet voice reached my ears as I looked at her for a moment, trying to remember who ate extra of certain dishes.

"Oh! So the grumpy looking dark-haired setter likes curry! And the cute grey-haired setter likes the spicy mapo tofu I made! I'll remember that for next time and bring some extra for them to take home afterwards!" I gave her a big hug before saying my goodbyes to each of the boys.

I was totally oblivious to the poor blushing 'cute' setter that stood there watching as I began pulling my wagon behind me, heading home to begin planning what else I might make for the next picnic we had. Today had been so much fun after all! I really couldn't wait for next time!

--------

It took 3 more picnics and two trips to watch them practice in their own gym after school before I really noticed how the boys would start gently teasing the grey-haired setter, who I now knew to be named Sugawara.

"Is it normal for them to tease Suga-kun like that? And what are they even teasing him about, for him to get so flustered looking, Kiyo-chan? I thought they all liked him, so why tease him?" I bounced in place, far too energetic today to remain still.

Even my parents complained I had too much energy and could likely power the whole neighborhood if they could find a way to harness even a fraction of it. I usually just laughed it off and went to cook dinner. I couldn't help it if I had too much energy.

"They found out he likes someone and are trying to convince him to confess to her." Her straight forward sentence had me freezing in place.

Looking closely at the poor blushing boy, I began thinking about the things I had seen whenever I was around him during the few picnics and trips here to see them practice. Slowly, my (e/c) eyes began to widen in shock.

"Oh my gosh! Kiyo-chan, does Suga-kun like you?!!" I couldn't stop myself from shouting at the top of my lungs, my hands going to her shoulders as I began shaking her gently.

The silence that fell upon everyone in the gym just made it that much easier to hear the sound of her hand hitting the side of my head as she let out a frustrated sigh.

"No, he does not like me. Idiot." Turning, she walked away and started talking to the team's coach and the adviser.

Both men gave me a small smile before turning back to Kiyoko and continuing the conversation. I'm not really sure how long I stood there in confusion before I noticed the group of boys standing in front of me, grins on their faces as a few of them snickered at me.

"You shouldn't space out like that, shorty. You could miss something." The blonde titan smirked at me as he pushed his glasses up.

"Huh? What do you mean? Did I miss something important?!" I stood there flailing my arms as I looked from face to face, slightly panicking that I had missed some amazing thing happening while I spaced out.

The panic stopped when I noticed one person missing from the group in front of me. Where had Suga-kun gone to? Growing unusually still for being me, I began to slowly look around the room in an attempt to find the missing boy. Finally I spotted him, after turning around and looking behind me. Why was he standing behind me?

"Suga-kun? What are you standing behind me for?" Confusion filled my voice as I looked at him.

"Umm... I just wanted... Ahh... To thank you for the lunch last time! Yeah..." His hand went up to rub the back of his head as he smiled at me.

"Suga! No! You need to do it before someone else gets to her first!" The voices of the whole team, but mostly Noya-kun and Tanaka-kun, filled the room.

"I'm sorry, but I'm really confused now. Suga-kun, what are they talking about? Do you think someone is going to make me stop cooking for you guys or something?" I heard the team behind me groaning.

"Suga! If you don't tell her right now, I swear I'll triple your training for the rest of the month!" I watched the blood drain from his face at the sound of Coach Ukai's voice.

"(y-y/n)-chan... Umm... Ireallylikeyouandwashopingyouwouldgoonadatewithme!" Unable to make out what he was saying, all I could do was stare wide-eyed as his face grew more and more red.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't understand what you just said Suga-kun... Could you-" I was quickly interrupted when I felt his warm hands grab mine.

"I like you." My (s/c) skin turned pink at his words.

The boys behind me grew silent as they watched us. I could feel their eyes boring into us with intensity, but it faded away as Sugawara continued talking softly to me.

"Would you please do me the honor of going on a date with me this weekend? Just the two of us, we can go anywhere and do anything you want." I watched as the red finally hit his ears, his brown eyes wide and his hands starting to tremble slightly as he waited for my answer.

"Umm..." I could see his shoulders start slumping in defeat.

The silence grew tense behind us as I fidgeted from foot to foot, my face growing warm as I felt the blood rush to my cheeks. Lowering my eyes to the floor, I gave his hands a quick squeeze and nodded my head.

"I'd like that very much, Suga-kun!!" I couldn't help but yell from the nervousness I felt.

Blushing fiercely, I glanced up at him and froze in place. The cutest expression of shock was on his face, his brown eyes wide as he stared at me. It was even cuter when his team started cheering behind us and his face turned tomato-red. Leaning close, I whispered the rest into his ear.

"Come to my place on Sunday. I'll make you dinner and you can bring a movie to watch."
