Part 4: Cain
Mayura had returned to the Divine Hall, and noticed that there were barely any servants. She figured they were on break and talking amongst themselves. When she faintly heard crying coming from somewhere.
She headed over to where the sound was coming from. She saw one of the servants crying, and another one trying to comfort her. She realized it was the same 2 servants that caught her and Malum together earlier. “What happened?” Mayura asked. The servant that wasn't crying saw Mayura, and replied, “My Lady, her father recently got very ill. She's afraid he's going to die soon.” Mayura frowned. She told them, “I'm sorry to hear that.. It must feel awful to lose someone that's close to you..”
“Have you ever felt that, my lady?”
Mayura paused for a moment, trying to remember something. She thought for a moment before hanging her head, trying not to cry.
Malum then returned, having finished his duties. He also noticed that the Divine Hall was emptier than normal, but didn’t hear what Mayura heard.
“I… I don't remember…. I.. don't know… if I've ever felt that before…” Mayura soon began to cry. The servant that was crying was led away by another servant. The one that was still there said, “My lady… I am so sorry…”
Malum heard what Mayura said and also heard her crying and walked to where Mayura was. Concerned, he gently put his hand on Mayura’s shoulder. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“I… I don't know…” the servant said. “We were talking about something.. I asked her a question and she started crying…”
Malum nodded with understanding, gently pulling Mayura into an embrace. “It’s okay,” he assured her. “It’s okay…”
Mayura needed to calm down. She began to have a huge migraine. Mayura ended up collapsing to her knees because of it. “My lady, are you alright?!” the servant asked. More servants came over and wanted to see if she was alright, but they all kept their distance.
Moments later, Mayura was laying on a bed, being watched over by healers. Malum was the only other Divine allowed to be in the room, while the rest waited outside of her room.
“I’m telling you, it’s that Cain guy,” Shad stated, pacing back and forth. “Everyone’s been acting weird since he showed up, and everything’s gotten worse since he left.”
“Although I agree that Cain is not a righteous man,” Louis calmly replied, “it doesn’t mean that he is the reason for this. Malum hasn’t even finished his diagnosis.”
During her time when she was passed out, she had remembered a lot of things. And when she woke up, she started bawling. Malum saw she was awake and began to panic, she wasn't supposed to be awake at this time.
“...Xavier….” Malum heard Mayura mutter. He became confused, he had no idea who this “Xavier” was. All he could assume was that he was important in some way.
Malum gently held Mayura’s hand, assuring her that everything was okay. However, he was unaware of what memories had been kept from her and the other Divine. He had no idea how wrong he was.
“Well, Cain didn’t leave with all his resources,” Arex pointed out, hoping to improve the mood.
“What do you mean?” Shad asked. “He took everything with him.”
Arex smirked deviously, replying, “An associate of mine just so happened to obtain a quarter of the resources he brought.”
Louis’ eyes widened while Shad started laughing.
“Malum… what happened…? Where am I….?” Mayura asked him.
“You’re in my office,” Malum replied. “You appear to have suffered from a migraine so bad that you knocked yourself unconscious. If that seems completely and utterly impossible, that’s because it is. I’m going to have to run some tests.”
Mayura was silent for a moment, trying to take in all of this information. “..I remembered something….”
“Yeah, I figured,” Malum replied, “since you mentioned someone named Xavier. Not sure who you’re talking about, but that’s not important. The important thing is that you need to recover.”
Mayura sniffled a little bit. “....my brother…. I remember him…. He was my brother… I remember my parents…. My home…… and the man that killed them….”
“They were murdered?” Malum asked. “Who did it?”
Mayura looked up at Malum. Anger filled her eyes. “Cain. He looked the exact same as he did when we saw him at the gate.”
Almost as if on queue, the shockwave of an explosion rocked the office. Malum kept his hand on Mayura to keep her stable as papers and medical equipment fell off shelves. The other Divine managed to keep themselves stable, their shock turning to dread. Shad immediately left, heading towards the origin of the shockwave:
Flames and smoldering stone littered the ground where the gate once stood. The guards that weren’t mangled by the blast were being dragged towards the healers by other guards, and the villagers ran away, screaming with panic.
Standing in front of what was once the gate was none other than Cain.
Mayura realized what was going on before anyone could report to her, and put up a strong barrier around the entire town, in an attempt to keep him out. It was harder than bedrock, and it was impossible to get through.
Cain shook his head, laughing. “You think a little wall will keep me from what I want?” In the blink of an eye, Cain was in the barrier, and the guards left standing held their shields out in front of them. “You can’t hope to stand against me,” he shouted, waving his hand and causing the guards to collapse in agony.
Shad stood between Cain and the guards, holding his shield and axe in a defensive posture. Cain chuckled, summoning a longsword darkened by corrupted power. “I’ll give you a swift death,” Cain promised.
Mayura struggled to get out of bed. She would do anything in her power to protect Haven. Malum noticed something about her eyes, they were completely white. And they were glowing.
“Do you think it’s wise to go out there like this?” Malum asked. “You’ve barely recovered!”
“Shad's going to get himself killed. I am not going to sit around watch Haven fall and see the people I care about get hurt.” Suddenly, Mayura was wearing her white gown again, but this time, she also had her sword with her.
Malum nodded, suggesting, “You shouldn’t go alone. I’m going with you, and so are the others, but if something goes wrong…” He gently placed an amulet in Mayura’s free hand. “This will guide you to a safe place.”
The two of them left the room, Arex was surprised when he saw that Mayura's eyes were completely white. Malum commanded, “Gear up. The time for battle has come!”
All of the warriors went to the gate. When they arrived, Shad and “Cain” were equal and neither of them were backing down from the fight.
Cain noticed the other Divine and decided to end the fight quickly. In the blink of an eye, Cain appeared behind Shad and stabbed him in the back. Shad screamed in agony, prompting Cain to pull his sword from the Divine guardian’s back.
Cain turned to the other Divine as Shad fell to his knees. His eyes were completely black like the night, and he raised his hand. Three clouds of black vapors emerged from the darkness of the Wilds, solidifying into warriors of air and darkness.
Malum picked up and carried Shad to his office and his assistants began to tend to the wound. The rest were left to defend themselves against the dark warriors, leaving Cain to step away and continue his deeds. He might have gotten away with it, too, if Mayura didn’t step in front of Cain, preventing him from advancing towards Haven.
Cain sighed. “I should’ve killed you when I had the chance,” he growled.
“But you didn't.” Mayura reminded him. She attacked with full force, forcing Cain to switch to a defensive fighting style and eventually getting in a couple of hits on him. Golden blood flowed from his wounds, enraging Cain.
“Worthless animal,” he shouted. “I tire of you and your interference!” Reaching out with his power, he robbed Mayura of air, choking her.
Mayura put a hand over her throat, and this would’ve completely p*ssed off Malum if he wasn’t trying to help Shad. Mayura fell to her knees, struggling against the dark power Cain wielded. Cain walked towards Mayura and raised his sword, preparing to finish her off.
Out of nowhere, a trident struck Cain in the chest. It passed through muscle and bone, and became impaled in the ground behind Cain. His grip on Mayura loosened, and Mayura began to gasp for air, oxygen finally returning to her lungs.
She turned to identify where the trident came from, and she saw Malum. He was running towards Cain, passing by Mayura and starting to pummel Cain. Strike after strike broke Cain’s bones and tore into his flesh as Malum’s form shifted from his humanoid form into the form of a large dragon. Malum’s attacks shifted from punching to scratching and biting, tearing Cain to shreds.
Louis helped Mayura up. Mayura soon regained her breath and saw what Malum had become. Malum returned to his humanoid form and approached Mayura, hoping that she wasn’t traumatized by what she had seen.
“Malum… what happened?!” She had asked. Louis became a little protective of Mayura at this point in time.
Before Malum could explain, Cain suggested, “It may be an ability of his to shapeshift into a dragon. It’s something I could do, although I much prefer the human form.” The entire collective of The Divine stared at Cain, who looked completely unharmed and well and was casually standing nearby.
Cain laughed. “Did you idiots really think I can be killed? I’m a demon! Physical manifestations are easier to make than excuses!”
“What even are you?” Mayura was soon filled with anger and frustration. Her white eyes glowed brighter than before.
Cain replied, “I am the Fatal strike to Haven’s heart.” Summoning a vast army of warriors made from evil made corporeal, he sent them against the Divine.
Something clicked inside of Mayura, a bright white aura surrounded her, the Divine backed away from her, she then turned into a LARGE white phoenix, about the size of Malum when he was a dragon. Golden fire came out of her mouth as she burned Cain’s army, killing off the majority of them. Only a few remained. Louis and Arex's jaws dropped. Malum was just in complete shock by this revelation. Mayura then turned her attention over to Cain and growled at him, preparing another attack. “Oh… sh*t.” Cain muttered under his breath.
“What…. The h*ll… was THAT?!” Louis asked. Arex was absolutely speechless.
Malum shouted, “Why are we all staring?! She just gave us a chance to beat this guy!” The Divine pressed forward, using their full power to defeat the remaining warriors. Cain was kept busy by Malum’s attacks, and was unable to summon any more warriors to aid him.
After a long and tiring fight, Malum stood victorious over Cain, his blade pointed at the demon’s throat. “Surrender,” Malum promised, “and you’ll only have to serve 100 years in our prison.”
Cain chuckled. “It wasn’t a fair fight… I was holding back.”
Mayura landed on the ground, giving Cain a death glare, she growled at him. But then for some reason, she calmed down and turned back to normal. She stayed absolutely silent.
“What do you mean by that?” Arex asked. “We kicked your *ss HARD!”
“There are two truths in this conflict, little light,” Cain replied. “First, I wanted to see the full might of The Divine, so I toyed with the lot of you. Second, I was stalling.”
“Enough of these games, Cain,” Malum shouted, retrieving his trident. “You will die, and you will never return to Haven!” Aiming his trident at Cain’s head, he thrust down… and missed.
Two swords deflected the trident, barely missing the demon’s skull by a mere few centimeters. Malum looked up at who kept him from executing Cain, and he was overcome with shock and betrayal. “I… I can’t believe…”
Drax smirked, replying, “Believe it.” With a swift kick to Malum’s core, Drax sent Malum flying back. Cain stood up, brushing the dirt off his clothes.
“You fought well, Divine,” Cain admitted, “but I am the victor. I have what I want, and you have lost a piece of yourselves. Drax belongs to me.” As he turned to Drax, who now knelt at his feet, Mayura seemed furious once again.
“Take him and go. If we ever catch you around Haven again, you'll be a dead man.” Louis told him.
“See, Drax?” Cain told his new servant. “They don’t want you.”
Drax stood, glaring at the other Divine. “It was a mistake to ever side with them, Master.”
“How could you do this to us, Drax? Why do all of this?! You were happy with us. What did we ever do to you?!” Arex asked his brother. His heart began to shatter.
“Happy?” Drax asked. “How could I be happy if there is so little to conquer? Cain gave me what you could NEVER give me: a future. Beyond this planet are countless others, and beyond this universe is infinity! Cain promised that I’d conquer them all, even if it took the rest of eternity!”
“Power doesn't give you happiness, Drax. It would only make you miserable. Enjoy and cherish what you have now, before you lose it completely. You of all people should know this.” Mayura told him. Drax thought for a moment, a visible tear going down his face, which made Cain very mad.
“This debate is over,” Cain announced. “He’s already made his decision and pledged his loyalty to me.” Drax nodded, putting away his swords.
Cain stated, “We’ll be back soon.” With that, both the fallen angel and the Divine disappeared.
