12. welcome home
After meeting Mio for the first time, Kim and Jae were completely sure that she was the child that they wanted to adopt. Kim saw past all of Mio's troubles and inner battles. She was perfect to them, and they couldn't wait to raise her as their own,
"I hope she likes her room. . ." Kim trailed off. Despite feeling anxious, there was a soft smile on her face. They had spent days decorating and fixing up their guest room, which would soon be Mio's. The windows were covered with light pink curtains and the small balcony had some flower pots hanging from the railing. In the middle of the room was a large queen-sized canopy bed. To the left of the room was an L-shaped desk and to the right was a dresser, closet, and bookshelf. It wasn't a huge room, but it was a perfect size. The room that was once bland and empty for guests they never had - was now feeling a lot more like home.
"She'll love it. I know she will." Jae placed a hand on his wife's shoulder. Just from looking at the completed room, Kim felt her eyes welling with tears. She looked up at her husband with a teary-eyed smile and hugged him tightly.
"I can't wait for her to come home." Kim exhaled heavily.
Given how eager Kim was to take Mio to her house for good, she decided to visit Mio in the hospital again. This had quickly become a habit. Kim and Jae would visit Mio and bring her something nice, such as a book, some cookies, or a nice drink from the café downstairs. Mio was already informed that she was going to be adopted, but the news was still new to her, she didn't know how to feel about it.
"Mio!" With a bright beam on her face, Kim entered the little girl's room. "I brought you some things, you must be so bored up here all on your own."
Kim and Jae's sudden entrance startled Mio a little, but she quickly calmed down. Mio was happy to see them again, given she had no family or friends to visit her. It was lonely in the hospital, but Dr. Chin and Semone made things a little more bearable.
"Here you go, sweetheart." Kim handed a bottle of diet Pepsi to Mio, as well as a box of biscuits. Curiously, Mio took both gifts, but she was mostly entranced by the Pepsi.
"What is this?" She asked Kim, who smiled at Jae.
"It's a soda. Drink some." Jae urged her to have a sip.
Mio struggled with opening the bottle, so Jae opened it for her and handed it back. Hesitantly, Mio took a small sip. She twisted her face a little at the fizz, but her expression quickly changed.
"How is it?" Kim inched closer.
"I love it." Mio chirped. "Thank you!"
"Oh, perfect! You're very welcome, Mio!" Kim clapped her hands together in excitement.
For a while, Mio was just nibbling at the cookies that Kim brought for her. It was silent for a moment, but Kim was itching for a conversation - so she decided to speak up.
"So, Mio. . ." Kim started, catching Mio's attention. "How do you feel about coming home with me and Jae?"
Mio stopped eating.
"We already prepared your room and everything. We're so excited to bring you home with us." The dark-haired woman continued.
"O-oh. . ." Park lowered her gaze. For some reason, she looked upset, which instantly concerned Kim and Jae.
"What's the matter?" Kim frowned.
"Maybe you're going too fast for her," Jae said. "We hardly know one another."
". . ." Kim paused for a moment, "You're right. I'm sorry, Mio." She nodded to herself. "I just got too excited."
"It's okay." Mio smiled gently. She reached her hand out and placed it on top of Kim's. Kim quickly held onto Mio's little hand, which soon brought a smile to her face.
In all honesty, Mio wasn't ready. She wasn't ready to go home with anyone, and she wasn't ready to be a daughter.
But that was fine with Kim and Jae. Kim was unable to bear a child and be a mother, yes, she was unable to be a mother to Mio. Even still, Kim wanted to take this little girl home. Kim believed that Mio would fill the void in her heart. Mio would complete the family, and they would live a wonderful life together.
Kim could not be a mother. But she could be a grandmother, or simply put, a guardian.
"I don't want another mother," Mio stated bluntly, but with a voice so sweet that it didn't sting at all. "I have one. Right, Auntie Semone?" She glanced at the nurse, who smiled sadly at the young girl. It was heartbreaking to hear what Mio had to say sometimes. She was such a young girl who had gone through so much, even if she didn't remember six years of her life. Sayuri didn't want her anymore, there was nothing that could have been done about that.
"Mio. . ." Kim's voice trailed off and became softer. "I can be your grandmother. Is that okay with you?" She stared deeply into Mio's eyes. "I can't have kids, Mio. Maybe God doesn't want me to be a mother, but God must want me to be your grandmother. Why else would he have brought me to you?"
Mio was silent, but she didn't let go of Kim's hand.
"What are you thinking?" Kim just barely inched closer, her eyes glassy with tears. She was dreading the fact that Mio might not want to live with her. Jae seemed to have caught onto that quite quickly, so he rubbed his wife's shoulder gently. The three adults in the room, Jae, Kim, and Semone, were all anxious to hear Mio's answer.
". . . Okay." Mio nodded, her voice was just barely audible, but everyone heard it. "That's okay with me." She gave Kim a cheery smile, which was returned instantly. Kim burst out into tears. In an attempt to soothe her and calm her down, Mio gave her a hug. Kim held onto the young girl tautly, but not enough to squeeze her.
"Thank you, darling, thank you so much." Kim sniffled.
A week later, Mio had gone home with Kim and Jae.
Jae drove a lovely Mercedes Benz, which Mio was terrified of. She had suffered greatly due to a car crash, and both Kim and Jae understood why she was afraid. The young girl sobbed in Kim's arms, but soon, she was brave and got into the car. Jae was a good driver, very safe and very smooth, so Mio was quite calm in the car. Kim stayed with her in the back seat, holding her and wiping away her tears.
"You're so brave, Mio." Kim smiled at the little girl, who was extremely interested in looking out of the window. Ever since the accident, Mio never left the hospital. The outside world had always been a mystery to her, but not anymore.
Jae pulled up to a beautiful house that wasn't too big or too small. The front was adorned with flowers and the front porch had a bench. It was the prettiest house on the entire street, Mio's eyes were practically sparkling when she saw it.
Kim stepped out of the car first and helped Mio out afterward, then Jae. The brunet man went to the trunk to grab all of Mio's clothes. They walked up the front steps and unlocked the door. There was a small walkway that lead into the open concept house. The three took off their shoes and entered the home. There were many windows with sheer white curtains which allowed a lot of natural light inside. The living room and kitchen were connected. There was no actual dining room, but there was a dining table to the right of the kitchen and a breakfast bar/kitchen island. The living room had a large flat-screen television, coffee table, and three sofas on a carpet. There was a door to the left of the walkway which lead to the garage. Then there was a door leading to a staircase that took you to the basement, which was mostly used for storage and a laundry room.
"Mio, let me show you your room!" Kim was more excited than anyone else. She took Mio's hand and lead her upstairs. There were three rooms, Mio's, Kim and Jae's, and the bathroom.
Kim pushed open the door to Mio's room, revealing a gorgeous space. There was a canopy bed in the middle, doors that lead to the balcony, an L-shaped desk, some bookshelves, a dresser, and a closet.
Mio started crying.
"What's the matter, sweetheart?" Kim knelt down beside the girl. "You don't like it?"
Mio sniveled, and gave Kim a hug. That was enough confirmation. Mio loved her new room.
