07. a mother's love
Mio had been unconscious for a while. Hayate and Jin fell asleep in her room, they'd been watching her for hours until the clock had just ticked to midnight. Jin's eyes were tired from all the crying he'd done, his cheeks had tear stains that he had been too tired to wipe away. Hayate had forced his eyes to keep open as long as he could. After a long day of school, and the stress of waiting for his sister to wake up, he was exhausted. His eyes had threatened to close, and stay shut - his eyes had won the battle.
Jin's mother, Hyuna, was with Sayuri for the most part. She'd come by to check on the kids, as well as Mio, before keeping Sayuri company for a few hours. Hyuna was glad to see her best friend was doing okay, but she was so worried for her God-daughter. Hyuna lectured Sayuri for a little bit, but Sayuri had started crying. . . Hyuna didn't want to stress her best friend out anymore, so she decided to stay quiet about the accident. Hyuna had fair skin and jet black hair, just like her son. Her eyes were bright green, and she stood about an inch or two taller than Sayuri. She had thin lips and a gentle voice, Hyuna was a little bit shyer than Sayuri.
The nurses had to coax Jin and Hayate out of the room to look after Mio. They didn't want to leave, especially Jin, but Hayate convinced him to go outside. They ended up waiting in Sayuri's room until they were allowed to go back.
"You boys should go home. You have to get up for school in the morning." Hyuna spoke sweetly and softly, but the fact she thought Hayate and Jin would be going to school in the morning, was stupid. They wouldn't be kept from their little sister any longer. Nothing was going to stop Hayate anymore. Not his Godmother and not his actual mother.
"No. I'm staying here." Jin childishly crossed his arms over his chest. "We're not leaving."
"As long as Mio is in here, I'm staying here." Hayate glanced at Hyuna, before turning away. "She needs me. I'm not abandoning her." He shot a glare at his mother, who didn't even bother to look his way.
"Hi Mio, my name is Semone. I'm a nurse, I'll be taking care of you, okay?" The kind nurse had entered Mio's room and slowly approached the sleeping girl. Even if the patient was asleep, it was important for a nurse to introduce themself when entering the room. Semone was a dark-skinned woman, she wasn't too old nor very young either. She had three children, none of them above the age of ten just yet. Given the fact that she had children of her own, and went to school for years, she was more than qualified to look after Mio. Semone was a kind lady, so Hayate and Jin trusted her to take care of their little sister.
Semone brought in a cart with all of her equipment to take a blood test from Mio. She had just started to prepare the needle and blood vials when Mio's eyes slowly fluttered open. She had a splitting headache despite all the painkillers. The IV was still in her arm as well.
"Oh, you're awake now. I'm just going to take a blood test from you, okay?" Semone smiled at Mio, who let out a small whine while looking over at the nurse. Mio felt her heartbeat increasing rapidly to the point that it was painful. Her eyes widened, and she began hyperventilating. Mio tried to sit up, but Semone put her to laying on her back again.
"It's okay Mio, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm a nurse." Semone tried to calm her down.
Mio instantly started crying. Everything in her head was a mess. She couldn't make out what Semone said, and what the voices had shouted in her head. Mio's eyes darted around the room as if she were looking for something or someone, but had no idea what or who. She raised her hand, and stared at her palm, her eyes wavering. Her fingers trembled. She was struggling to grasp reality. Was Semone real? Or was she just a puppet?
Sobbing uncontrollably now, Mio screamed.
Sayuri hadn't seen her daughter since they were in the car together. She was too afraid of seeing what she had done to that poor little girl. Sayuri didn't want to take responsibility. She never did.
But the time had come when she mustered the courage to see Mio. Sayuri was doing much better, her injuries were extremely minor unlike Mio's.
"I don't trust you with her." Hayate's tone was so harsh. Sayuri knew for sure that he was Park Jung's son. The resemblance was clear, and their personalities were so very similar. They both had those striking red eyes. Those eyes either looked straight past you or sliced you up to pieces.
"Mio is my little girl. Please trust me just this once." Sayuri refused to make eye contact. She glanced at Hyuna, before leaving the room. Hyuna had to stay back, keeping Hayate and Jin from racing after Sayuri. The blonde woman made her way to the floor and room where Mio was being kept. She was a child, and needed to be taken care of in the children's ward - so it was quite a walk away. While Sayuri was walking down the hallway, she heard a very familiar voice.
Screaming.
Wailing.
Sayuri quickened her pace and stepped into Mio's room. Mio was refusing to let any of the nurses touch her. She was screaming, sobbing, and choking on her own breathing.
"Mio, Mio it's me. It's your eomma!" Sayuri felt her eyes well up with tears. She made her way over to the little girl. For a second, Mio calmed down and stared at Sayuri with a confused look on her face. Her soft rose brown eyes were filled with fear. The girl was absolutely mortified.
"Leave me alone! Leave me alone!" Mio shouted, sucking in a breath of air. "What's going on!? Where am I!?" She continued to cry.
"M-Mio?" Sayuri's expression completely fell. "What do you mean? It's your mommy. Don't you want to see your mommy?" She looked over at the nurses for some sort of help.
"I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm so scared." Mio choked through her sobs.
"She doesn't remember you. . ." Semone gave Sayuri a serious look. "It appears she has amnesia. Mio doesn't remember anything at all."
Sayuri felt her heart drop.
"What?" Sayuri furrowed her brows. "That can't be true. No! No that can't be right!" Now, Sayuri was throwing a tantrum. "Mio! I'm your mother! You remember me right? Your drunken, bitchy mother. I treated you so badly, I know I did! You have to remember me, you have to!" Sayuri felt her knees go weak. While the woman cried, Mio stared at her. Sayuri saw nothing in Mio's eyes that resembled familiarity. Mio looked right through Sayuri as if Sayuri never existed to her. Not for a second.
"Please Mio, please! I'm so sorry. I'm sorry! You're my only daughter, please, please. . ." The woman was only stressing Mio out more, so the nurses had to take her out of the room. She was too tired to fight back, and she allowed them to escort her outside.
Mio hadn't calmed down very much, so to take her blood, and change her IV and bandages, they had to give her a needle. All of the nurses held her down and gave her the needle - which made her even more scared, but it had to be done. The white-haired girl soon relaxed and allowed the nurses to take care of her. Once she was looked after, Mio had fallen asleep again, which was for the best.
"What's the matter? Did you go see her?" Hyuna watched as Sayuri returned to her room. Hayate and Jin both looked up at the woman, who looked distraught.
"Hyuna. . ." Sayuri went over to her best friend, staring into the void, and hugging onto herself. "My daughter. . . My sweet little Mio. . ."
"What happened?" Hayate jolted up from his seat.
"She-. . ." Sayuri let out a small sob. "She doesn't remember me."
"What!?" Jin stood up as well, as Sayuri went to lay back down on the bed.
"She was screaming, crying. . . I looked her in the eye, and she didn't. . . She didn't recognize me at all." Sayuri wiped her eyes. "My only daughter. . ."
Hayate bolted out of the room, with Jin following behind him. They didn't waste any time. The two teenage boys were just about to turn into Mio's room, but Semone had stopped them. She shut the door behind herself.
"Where's my sister?" Hayate gave her a cold stare.
"She was moved to a different room," Semone responded. "I'm afraid that you're not allowed to see her for now."
"Different room?" Jin squinted. "Where? What floor?"
Semone sighed, "the psychiatric ward."
