"Please come back [Y/N]!" Sans was hunched over a mound of flowers. "Please," he whimpered, his voice much more ragged this time. "I-I can't do this alone."
You attempted to reach your hand out to brush a stray tear off his cheekbone, but your hand passed through him. "I'm still here," you whispered lightly, hugging him. Sans was oblivious to this, making the urge to cry much more painful.
"You're dead now, so what does it matter?" a childlike voice sung through the Ruins. You narrowed your eyes and turned to face Chara. "But the both of us know that there is a way to fix all of this."
You gave a long sigh and rubbed your hand against the stone marker that was your gravestone. "It's not worth it," you said at last. "Sans would forget everything... Even me..."
"It's a pity what love does, isn't it?" Chara floated a few feet above the ground and cackled. "Part of you wishes to continue, to play this game over and over and over again. But yet... You know that if you complete a final reset, no one will remember you."
"What would you do then?!" you spat, turning around to face Chara. She flashed you a sadistic smile and twirled a knife on her fingertips.
"If I still had power over the reset..." her smile vanished. "It doesn't matter. You have two options here - 'Continue' or 'Final Reset'. Which one is it going to be?"
Your hand twitched towards the continue button, but Sans' muffled sobs echoed in the background. It wasn't right to let him suffer like this, was it?
"Let's do this," you muttered and slammed your hand on the 'Final Reset' button. White cracks snaked their way across the ground, slowly deleting the data that made up this world.
"Did I also forget to mention," Chara cocked her head in innocence as white lines snaked up her feet, "that final resets generate random alternate versions of this reality?"
Your mouth dropped in horror as the white lines snaked across your body and shattered you into pieces.
"Why?" Sans asked, eventually pulling away from you. His friendly pinpricks of light had vanished, leaving you in utter darkness. "You should have just left me here. I belong in a dead world surrounded by dead memories."
"You're not dead," you insisted, anger rising in your voice. "We need to leave this place Sans. There are too many bad - " You stopped yourself, the word memory hanging on the tip of your tongue. Of course you couldn't have any memories here, you had never ventured through the Underground.
Sans seemed to nod and raised his hand towards the sky, a beam of bright blue light surrounding the terrain. You could catch glimpses of falling snow and abandoned log cabins before being transported to the surface.
The sunlight was blinding and you groaned in pain as your eyes adjusted to the light. "It was your idea..." Sans scolded, humor in his voice.
"D-Do you still s-see them?" you asked, blinking through tears. The light finally became bearable and you stood upright.
Sans did not reply and stared at the scorched forest. "If your friends were here before, they're gone now," he said, looking at the footprints. Your heart sunk at the sight of interlacing monster tracks. The human tracks stopped abruptly and indentations in the ground accompanied by monster tracks suggested that multiple humans had been slaughtered and dragged away.
But your brother couldn't be dead.
Right?
Tears welled in the corners of your eyes and you buried your face in Sans' jacket. "He can't be gone..." you stammered, your hands clenching the fur of his jacket.
Sans hugged you back, not knowing how to respond. For once you understood the gut wrenching pain that followed after the death of a sibling. But you hadn't confirmed that your brother was dead. There was still hope...
"You're really holding onto hope after all these years?" a child's voice chimed through the forest. You pulled away Sans and began to frantically claw your ears. "Are you finally remembering the truth? About what you did to him?"
A girl who was slightly shorter than you stepped out of the bushes. She wore a green and yellow striped sweater with multiple bloodstains on her. Her eyes were red ovals with a jagged smile on her face. A golden heart locket was draped over her head.
"D-Do y-you s-see it?" you took a step back in fear. There was primal instinct that was running through you. This was the devil itself.
Sans looked frightened and began to whip his head around wildly. "I don't see her..." he muttered, sympathy in his eyes. You opened your mouth to protest but immediately closed it.
"Sans... I don't think I mentioned anything about it being a girl..." you stammered.
"See? There's more to smiley trash bag than meets the eye!" she cackled and took a step towards you. The girl drew a knife from her pocket and held it up to your cheek. "It's such a shame for the power you yield to be held up in a mortal body like this. I could kill you..." She pressed the tip of the knife into your skin. Blood poured from the contact wound and onto your [F/C] shirt. "But what would be the fun in that?!"
Sans noticed this and swiped his hand upwards, creating a Gaster Blaster. "Where is Chara?" he hissed, looking for the invisible demon. You pointed a shaking finger to a spot next to a leaning oak tree. He gave a solemn nod and fired the Gaster Blaster.
This caught Chara by surprise and she teleported before the beam could incinerate her. "YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE HAPPY!" Chara roared and leaped at you. You noticed that black streaks were crawling up her face. She caught you by your neck with a surprising force and pinned you to the ground. Chara placed an open palm on your chest.
"Sleep well [Y/N]."
Chara vanished and you slowly got to your feet. There was a burning sensation from where she had touched you. "Is she gone?" Sans asked, his eyesockets dark.
You nodded wordlessly and then turned to him, your face grim. "You have a lot of explaining to do."
